Good video as usual, the drum filters are definitely the way forward no question if only for the self cleaning aspect. Ive been playing with a few prototypes of drum filters of my own with similar results. The niggle i have with it, is the principle functionality of a sieve (mesh round drum) is hindered by the contact of clean water with dirty water, however brief that may be. If the drum was elevated out of the clean water, the debris will settle, clog and dry much quicker instead of a wash effect of dirty water touching clean water swilling around until it eventually clogs the mesh, i also found that when the drum cycles, a percentage of dirt is contained in the drum as the drums transition from below the water line to above it effects a natural backwash action hence my next prototype will raise the drum out of the clean waters return sump. Instead of the float level triggering the cycles from the dirty side it can go in the clean side. Another good modification would be to have the uv inside the drum as over a few months i noticed discoloration of the frame and mesh. The addition of the lamp made it look new again in a week. It would also save the aggro of changing your bulb on the smaller side of the shed. Uv design in its self i have never been happy with, the idea of water rushing past a bulb makes no sense, i have seen far better results with a bulb half the size therefore more efficient when sat in a larger body of water than the standard uv casing provides. Any how Back to filters, and the reason for the post, my only concern is can the water be too clean in our obsession for clarity. The test mesh for my latest drum is 10 microns with no obvious strain on fluidity. Whats your view?
@Wrighty
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicholas and thank you. would having the drum out of the water not allow the dirt and algae to dry out in places and make it harder to get off the mesh. I don't know, it's just a thought. Another thing was, doesn't 30 micron and below make it difficult to treat your pond as it can remove the treatment as well so I've been told. I have been looking for a UV for the filter but there silly money as my drum is 22". I'm not paying nearly £300 for one. I am still looking into that one. Keep up the good work. Thanks, Terry.

I will definitely be purchasing some, any improvement to pond quality is a must,Visited a koi company and his pond is 19000 gallons running 2 x drum filters and his water quality is absolutely pristine, in fact he has stopped using ozone. but the cost is horrific, so what you are doing deserves top merit.regardsChris.

Great video as always, interesting to see how other people tackle the practicalities. Our Koi pond is modest size, the filter medium is a double duvet (acrylic) under a lot of fine sand, seems to work very well but the bio load is probably modest. The return from filter to pond is split two ways one through a UV. Was fun making the filter..... love solvent adhesive and PVC, a pleasure to make spray bars etc!

great video. I do like the idea of keeping developing new and better filter systems, after all and as you have mentioned, the prices for buying a filter like a nexus are ridiculously high. We need an alternative. We have a pond with 130.000 litres of water, and the price for buying a filter system at retail price is totally out of the question. I have received quotes well above 10.000 Pounds for a "suitable" filter... so no needs for saying we are fans of your DIY solutions. brds. Martin from Denmark

This RDF is again a great wonderfull piece off art Wrighty..... unbelieveble.... I wil build one for myself, but there are 2 things with I was thinking on what is maybe a improvement.. correct me if I am wrong, 1. I wil make the inlet higher so the water wil clattered in the first compartiment, this wil make some extra airbubbles. 2. How the dirt now fall in the bucket wil also give waterloss, and needs a regular controll or the risk the bucket wil overflows. I am thinking to make on that side a rectangular bowl on that side, lets say 150mm X widht of the RDF and 250 mm heigh. On the underside a drain pipe with go under 90' in the RDF so all water go back in the RDF. In this little bowl a fine stainles steel mesh from 0,35 or 0.25 micron with wil cath all the dirt And let the water pass through Now I only have to check now and then how full this rectangular bowl is, take it out and spray it clean ... Sorry for my bad Englisch..... anyway just my 2 pence, and please comment if you think this idea is wrong or faulty .... :) Please go on with your videos they are great, and may be long from me, love to watch it... cant wait until you release the plans for the RDF. regards Dick
@Wrighty
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Dick, and thank you. I didn't want the water splashing into the drum as the sooner the dirt settles the better. I am leaving the bucket at the moment so I can keep an eye on how much water is used. I find it only uses about 1 1/2 buckets a day which is good as you need to do water changes weekly anyway. I will have a different idea for the waste eventually. Thanks for your ideas, Much appreciated, Terry.
@opa-dick
7 жыл бұрын
Wrighty ok, I cant wait on what you have for solution for the bucket.. I have already order some 0.35 micron mesh to test one and other.... I dont want eather the dirt back in the drum, that must stay in the mesh, only the water may go back so i have a minimum dirt to trow away as possible and minimum water loss, my pond is only 2 meter to 1,5 meter and 2 meter deep. and i hardly ever change my water. just now and then fill it to level... thanks again for your great work. @Wrighty
7 жыл бұрын
Hi, with a 1000 gallon pond I would still recommend a two tub system. 1st barrel for mechanical filtration and the 2nd barrel for your bio filter. You will find with a smaller pond it's harder to control the water quality. Bigger ponds are easier to look after. I would look to over filter if possible and go for at least a 2 tub system. Terry.

Wrighty thank you for your input. i will set up a 2 barrel system. i picked up a 5400 gal per hour pump to go with it. im hoping that will be enough to turn over the water. can the lava rock be used as filter material and biological?
@Wrighty

Hi Chris, the pump you mention at 5400 gph is way way too big for that size pond. I make that over 24000 lph. With a 1000 gallon pond your only looking to turn over 500 gph (2300 lph) a 3000 to 4000 lph pump would be plenty. Terry.

ah, so the concept is not the same as an overstocked home aquarium? the pump was free btw. i can always restrict the flow with a valve. im trying to do this build econimically.. perhaps i will have to spend a little money on the right sized pump.

Hi Chris, for good filtration you should be looking to turn over your pond volume once every 2 hours. The economy will come with the smaller pump in the running costs. hope this helps. Terry.

Hi Adrian, To build the RDF costs around the £500.00 mark and PP RDF costs around the £600.00 mark. You can find more details and plans on my website diypondfilters.com Hope this helps, thanks, Terry.

All your fish look so well fed, half of mine halve skinny bodies compared to the heads, is that bad for them?
@Wrighty
7 жыл бұрын
Hi, I do give my fish what they want so they are well fed. I feed several times a day as long as there's no food left floating. I also vary there diet quite a bit. 3 different types of pellet, they love tined sweetcorn, brown bread, cheerio's, prawns now and again, a slice of orange as the citrus is good for them. Once they get use to eating different things they'll eat pretty much anything. Just make sure it's not bad for them. Terry.

Wrighty thanks for the reply, I've been waiting for the temperature in my pond to rise, only two weeks ago did it reach above 12 degrees and the past few days has been above 15 so am feeding them more now. I've recently purchased different types of foods so will try that and see if I can bulk them up a bit without over feeding them. also keep up the good work, I'll be trying to make my own pro system soon, thanks for all your efforts

You can get koi food for lower temperatures. I believe you can feed them down to about 8 deg. It's a wheat germ so they can digest it easier. Try them on some tined sweetcorn. Mine are like piranha when I put that in. If your thinking of building the Pro system you can get the full building plans on my website diypondfilters,com

Wonderful. But please, do shorter videos more often, it's so fun to see the progress. :-) Have you thought about a "floating raft" growbed as a first filtration? The dirtiest water goes through roots and help break down all nitrites and nitrates, and gives vegetables. :-) (Then feed it to the filters.) Keep up the good work.

Hi, My lilly's haven't done very well this year as I didn't get them re potted. They do have a go at them but I try to remember to throw a lettuce in the pond now and again to give the koi something to go at. Not sure if it helps but seems to. Terry.

Wrighty cheers terry, I'm new to all this so I'll try them with a lettuce. I gave them an orange the other day & that seemed to go down a treat.

Terry, I just read some comments asking for shorter videos. Really?!? If anything they could be longer as you do such great work! But really, 14 minutes is too long, come on people!

Hi Ron, thank you. I think they were just asking for more videos. I wish I had the time to do more but it is difficult. And there's not that much goes on in the pond world to release weekly videos. I don't want them to get boring. Thanks for your support Ron, Its very much appreciated. Terry.

Zero ammonia and zero nitrate would concern me as a pond enthusiast. Zero ammonia and zero nitrite, yes. All three at zero? No. The process of ammonia and nitrite being consumed would create nitrates, which having a small amount is necessary for a healthy pond. If all three were zero, you'd start having issues with algae blooms. Nitrate test kits aren't all that good to be honest, if it says zero, you can bet its wrong, there will still be nitrates in your pond. A very nice set up though - thumbs up! :-)

Hi and thank you., I did say in the video nitrate by mistake. I should have said nitrite. I am running around 20mg nitrate in the pond at the moment which I would like down a bit. I'm planning to introduce a few pond plants which should help. Thanks, Terry.

Pothos (devils ivy) is great for sucking up nitrates...a lot of fish keepers are using it in their tanks now...I use it in my sump/refugium. I would love koi but they are illegal where I live (Queensland) $40,000 fine if you get caught with them....I have to be satisfied for now with my minature "koi" ...comets.

Kind of sad that you feel the need to explain to people why your doing all of this. Can't they just come along for the ride and enjoy them selves? As a pond diy-er myself, I do it for the challenge (can I do better) and for the benefit of my fish. Building something yourself and making it work the way YOU want is so satisfying Great video as always.

And what if you made a good amount of money on the side? You took the time to figure this out, build it, test it and make plans available for it. Seems like today if you do not offer everything for free, you're automatically labeled as greedy and selfish. One wonders what people like this use to pay their own bills.

That's true. If I was making loads of money out of this the last thing I would do is make a video saying I don't think its better than the Pro system lol. It would be the best thing on the planet. Anyway my friend they are just a minor one in many and that's what keeps me going. Thank you for your support. Terry.
