In this installment of our "Camping Tips" series, I explore a recipe for "Fly Dope" first mentioned in "Woodcraft" by Nessmuk in 1891, and later reiterated as "Insect Varnish" by Horace Kephart in "Camping and Woodcraft", published in 1908. Come along as we mix it up and give it a try!
RECIPE:
1 OZ PENNYROYAL OIL
2 OZ CASTOR OIL
3 OZ KILN BURNT PINE TAR
The Pennyroyal and Castor oil, I bought from www.pureformulas.com. The kiln burnt Stockholm pine tar can be bought from www.sagerestoration.com. Combine ingredients and slowly heat to a slow simmer, which takes about 5 mins. Let cool, then put into a non-breakable bottle with a screw top.
