This video is in the Re-Engineering the Chess Classics series! To celebrate the publication of my new book (written together with my childhood coach Steve Giddins) I am examining a series of classic games - just as we did in the book - using the creative engine analysis techniques I described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" At the same time, I get to indulge my current obsessions for a couple of classic players ;) and this time the lucky "victim" is Paul Saladin Leonhardt. We've already seen one manic game of Leonhardt's against Janowski ( • Re-Engineering the Che... ) and it's clear from this series of videos that it was no exception! Leonhardt was born in 1877 and played chess until death in 1934. He competed in many strong tournaments and played many of the top players. Although never at the top rank, his aggressive style brought him several scalps and many more narrow misses! We will take a look at both! My thanks to Twitter-friend Iris for pointing me to the book "Vergessene Meister" by Frank Zeller and Tim Hagemann (Kania Schachverlag) which gives a lot of biographical detail and highlights some interesting games!
This game is - you guessed it - another heartbreaking narrow miss for Leonhardt against a Marshall in his prime! A brilliant queen sacrifice is expertly parried by Leonhardt who seems on his way to victory a piece up but Marshall was always tricky....
I’m grandmaster Matthew Sadler, a 2-times British Champion, and ranked in the world’s top 50 for many years. I’m also a prolific author. My latest book "Re-Engineering the Chess Classics" appeared in May 2023. It uses the techniques described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" to analyse afresh thirty-five of the most fascinating and complex chess games ever played by World Champions and other top grandmasters.
