With all its goofy charm, it really was ground breaking back in 1980 and today in a lot of aspects. I love the things that no one really talks about like the cinematography. The use of birds and owls cooing in the night. Love that subtle shot of Ned looking across the lake at Kevin Bacon and his girl frolicking along the shore, like ah, that Kevin Bacon gets all the girls, how he’s clearly feeling like a 3rd wheel. I just appreciate those subtle moments in the film. And of course the use of rain:)

Fun fact: Friday the 13th was inspired by Halloween, during the height of slasher films. When it was released, John Carpenter watched it and noticed it’s high amount of gore. Which inspired him to make the second Halloween more bloody. So the Halloween franchise and Friday the 13th franchise both inspired each other. Could be wrong but I think it’s strangely wholesome lol

The killer in Bay of Blood wears a grey cable knit sweater, It takes place near a lake and it has some similar kills. Yes, he made it to cash in on the success of Halloween but that wasn’t new for him as he also made Here Come The Tigers to cash in on Bad News Bears.

Casting Betsy Palmer as Jason's mother was a pretty smart move too. Betsy Palmer was fairly well known for different TV and movie roles and often played kind, compassionate women who were either romantic leads or supportive friend/sister figures to the lead characters. So audience had a certain feeling of comfort with her and were not ready for her to be a creepy mother turned killer.

When I was a Marine in the mid 80's. While returning with my company. From Okinawa, Japan back to Camp leJune, NC. I couldn't sleep so I read a few books on the long flight back. There actually was a Friday the 13 th Novel. I think it was Jason Lives. We'll the story in the book was never used. It gave his true origin. His father was a military scientist who created and took this super soldier serum. Which turned him into this Ahnuld like guy. His wife was pregnant. He injected her and the fetus with the serum. Causing the baby to be badly deformed in the face/head. The mother went nuts, some how a few years later. The mom ran off with Jason I guess. The other kids at the camp were terrified of Jason. Because he was terribly deformed and mentally screwed up too. No one went to save him and he was fought to have drown. Years later after Jason was killing many campers. His father like a Col. in the Army go hunting for himin those woods. After they beat the crap out of each other. The father injected him with some kind of super acid and it kills him. It would of made for his origin and finally killing him off.

I guarantee everybody here was waiting for your reaction to the ending jump scare, and your reaction was absolutely classic! I saw this movie on TV as a young girl in the mid-80s and I nearly jumped through the roof. It's good to see that this movie hasn't dated and still has the same impact for a new audience. I really loved your discussion afterwards (I think one of your best). I agree, this story is really told well and not your usual run-of-the-mill slasher affair. Friday the 13th is up there with the original Halloween imo. Based on some of your previous reaction choices, I would like to recommend two things for you (Hope you don't mind me doing so)... The first is the TV series "Wayward Pines" (2015) [Season One only, the one with Matt Dillon]. Based on your wonderful reaction videos to Fargo Season One, I think you would both really enjoy Wayward Pines too. They were the two big shows of that time. (Season Two was a totally separate thing and bombed, but the original Season One is magnificent, and I think as strong and as memorable as Fargo). There's no obligation of course, but if you do ever decide to check it out, please don't do any research beforehand because it relies heavily on mystery and reveals. The second recommendation is the Korean psychological horror classic movie "Suddenly in the Dark" (1981), aka: Suddenly in Dark Night (깊은밤 갑자기). The reason being, it was a one-off Korean movie that deliberately aped the styles of the horror movies that were coming out of the west (US/UK) during the late 70s/early 80s. So it will have a somewhat familiar vibe for you while at the same time being something a bit different. It's a brilliant movie that reminds me of The Shining mixed with several other celebrated horror movies of that era. I haven't commented before but I just wanna take this opportunity to say how much I enjoy watching your videos. Your reactions are genuine, your discussions are always interesting and you come across as a very down to earth couple. Congratulations on your new parenthood.

I first saw this in the theater with friends, then a few years later in the 80s we rented it after getting one o' them 'fancy', 'cutting-edge' VHS VCRs. There was no frame advance, only Pause, and we made a game in the Kevin Bacon death scene of trying to exactly pause on the blood spurt from the arrow piercing his neck, the winner being the one who could freeze it when the arch of blood was the highest, going into his mouth in that instant before the scene switch. Fun times! :) One of our friends had just attended college with actress Laurie Bartram, who had played Brenda in the movie before going to college. When the scene came onscreen where she was playing strip Monopoly in that sexy underwear, all he could do was gaze at the movie with a 'deer in the headlights' expression, muttering lustfully under his breath, "Wow, that's Laurie!" Fun times, indeed.... :)

I graduated from high school on Friday the 13th, 1980. I've always had good luck with the number 13. And especially usually on Friday the 13th. I always remember as a 7 or 8 year old. On my way to school I found a tiny black kitten on Friday the 13th. The two boys I recently made friends with. As we were walking and goofing off on the way to school. The other two boys ran off screaming black cat. I picked it up and went to the nearest hour way up on a hill top. A teary eyes really old lady came to the door. It turned out it was her kitten. I was new to the neighborhood and school. So I rushed off. My principal was waiting outside for me. The sweet old lady had called the school. And told him I rescued her kitty. So the principal was cool with me. I think that old lady always brought me good luck maybe after that.

I did my first stand-up comedy monologue in Orlando's first Comedy club. It was called The Funny Farm, and this was around 1986. My first ever monologue was all about how to survive a slasher film. One of the most important rules was to find the virgin and stay with them, because you get killed if you fuck around. The monologue was great, but it got even better when one of the other comedians got on a microphone in the back of the club and started doing the "Cha-cha-cha Ha-ha-ha" sounds from this movie. We hadn't planned for it. I din't ask for it. It became a regular part of the routine.

Pam could've worked at the diner, had a line or two, nobody would've suspected her. Instead they just had a reveal at the end. Here's the killer, someone we've never seen before. We do get 5 minute solo scenes of making instant coffee though. It all worked out. I love these movies.

Freddy and Jason are supernatural. In fact, I wholly recommend the Freddy vs Jason movie! The first movie holds up surprisingly well as a standalone movie, much like the original Halloween. The later movies are fun for the fans, Jason X is probably my favorite.

First Nightmare on elmstreet - Johnny Depp. First Friday the 13th - Kevin Bacon. And another just as good movie is The Burning where another huge actor debutes. Try not to find out before you watch if you decide to do it.

Betsy Palmer used to be a popular "TV MOM" so she received a LOT of hate for this role. Siskel even published her address (Doxxing her) to his fans because he was so mad.

After John Lennon was killed in 1980, there was a ridiculous amount of outrage regarding movie violence that lasted a couple years..... it was kind of a "social contagion".

Betsy Palmer was definitely the star of this movie. Being from the old Hollywood contract system and parlaying her career into television she was considered like a Katie Couric in her day, squeaky clean all American girl next door. When she took this role, it was under her belief that no one would ever see it and wrote it off as some weekend drive-in theater film for teens or college kids too busy into each other than notice what's going on on the screen. When it became a hit, it surprised everyone and critics were really mean to it, especially Ms. Palmer, trying to publicly shame her for her involvement. It was so bad that Ebert (of Siskel & Ebert), the respected film critic, encouraged hate mail to the actress an even gave out her actual physical address. Very dirty indeed. This was before stalkers, but what ended up happening was that it backfired on Ebert because she received fan mail instead, praising her perfomance, even theorizing her character's motive. Betsy Palmer, though never did another horror film, did revel in the popularity of the horror film conventions and often times appeared at them, graciously answered questions, signed autographs. She never forgot how to be a star. Of course, she learned from the greatest star of them all, Joan Crawford, who she starred with in a movie called "Queen Bee". Talk about brutal and savage...going up against Crawford.
