Sang-woo doesn't say that Ali can call him "Sang-woo," he tells Ali that he can call him "hyung" which means big brother. It's used for a younger brother to his older brother and close male friends who have an age gap; the younger friend calls the older friend hyung. Gi-hun missed his daughter's birth because he was participating in a strike. It's inspired by (or is) the 2009 SsangYong Motors Strike where 2,646 workers (43% of the workforce) were laid off to increase assets for global investors. The police and army violently attacked the factory where the workers were striking, and at least one person was beaten to death by the police. After the strike, most of the workers were blacklisted from other jobs but they also had to pay massive fines. Half of the workers in the strike suffer from PTSD, 80% have major depression issues, and many of them committed suicide.

Thank you for clarifying this. I've noticed by the time this episode is seen, a lot of people forget the conversation between Gi-hun and his ex-wife. His ex-wife complains that he missed his daughter's birth and she had to "drag herself to the hospital." But he says he missed it because he had to watch his coworker die before his eyes. I knew it was based off actual events but I did not know the specifics, so thank you for informing me!

That is so sad.. thank you for telling this, it makes you think about how some people do everything right and still get the wrong ending because of others' decisions and unfair treatment. Their lives were ruined because of greed their employers had to grow without valuing the relations they had with their staff. Makes me wonder what happened to such a company, when the workers had their whole lives destroyed.

I think its also fair to think that most of the participants in Squid Games are former blue collar workers that are blacklisted or had to turn to loan sharks to make ends meet. Which is why the Front Man is very serious about equality. Most of their debt is not by their own choice.

I think one of the standout things about the show is how much it leans into the Korean culture and references. It would have been super easy for a director to try to genericize the show to make it more accessible for an international audience, but the very action of not doing that created a show that feels more personal and real.

The brother’s only been missing for a couple weeks - not 5 years. It was mentioned in episode 2 when the cop’s storyline was introduced and he was talking to their mom/went to check on his brother at his apartment. The landlady said she hasn’t seen him in a couple of weeks and he missed his rent or something. That’s when he went inside and found the box with the card. So he was newly missing which is why their mom was worried and the brother is looking for him.

One of my favorite things about this show is parallels from earlier episodes in the final two or three that show there was a lot of foreshadowing. Can’t wait to talk about it after you’ve watched those episodes! But they all appear in episode 2, the one we can talk about from this episode is gi-Huns ex wife is mad at him in the second episode because he wasn’t there for their daughters birth, and he explains to her that she knew why he couldn’t be and that his coworker died that day.

UGHHH at 7:58, sangwoo says "then just call me hyung", not "then just call me sangwoo". Hyung means "brother" and is like a term of endearment that younger male calls men older than them. Ik when this came out people were really mad at the subs for not translating this properly because it makes so much difference to the story. you'll notice Ali doesn't say "sangwoo" after that, but "hyung". its such a simple translation idk why they mess it up

inaccurate English subs is somehow a consistent thing for Korean media and as a Korean bilingual person it always bugs me 😅 like I get sometimes it won't translate well but more often, the change feels unnecessary

This is why I prefer fan-subs, because they usually leave such culturally specific usages in and it's upto the viewer to go and research it. I also understand the official translator's quandary, because they cannot do what fansubbers do...

There is 1 winner or no winners... thus is confirmed by the winners log in records room... When one of the worker explains the rules of the games in episode 1, he states, “Those who win all six games will receive a handsome cash prize.” This makes it sound as if multiple people can win, but its misleading wording, "those who win all 6 games" is not speaking of the 456 players currently in the games, its referring to the decades of players that won.

Honestly the concept is like when they do American idol and all that stuff. It's a fake safety net. The world out there is brutal, they bring in people who really want something and then either break or make their dreams. Even if you are the winner though, it doesnt grant you success long term. Just momentarily.

To bring up a point that I don’t think is mentioned: the detective stops wearing the square mask because each mask has a chip that tell the scanner what number it is. If they see that he has a mask of an “employee” that was killed that would be suspicious. That’s why he went back to the circle mask.

They do get a choice in here though. The only people who were unfairly treated were the ones who died in the first game "red light green light" because they didn't know or have the choice to leave. Everyone who came back knew the risks and had the choice to not participate and they still did. So now it is fair, maybe not just, but definitely fair.

Listening to you guys discuss the episode, Nobu is on the right track! The show is a metaphor for capitalism so it IS like the real world. ❤ From a socialist perspective the games aren't fair because if it was fair there'd be handicap points/the old guy would get more time because he moves slower etc; their starting points would be evened out so they'd all have the same opportunity, an even playing field. But form a CAPITALIST perspective the games could be considered fair, the rules are obvious and it's kill of be killed.

I'm not sure where you guys are with this show on Patreon, but if you haven't reached episode 8 yet, keep this end discussion in mind for something they do in the game that episode. I personally have some very strong feelings regarding how "fair" of an environment they're creating/allowing after that game.
@manon_0411

When they say "playing fair and being equal", they just mean that the players are given the same opportunity in the games (they stripped them of their belongings when they came in, no player knows what the next game is, etc). Of course people are different, and you could say it's unfair because some are stronger or more clever than others and in situations such as the tug-of-war game, it does give them an advantage. But it's made as fair as possible in terms of opportunity. But fair doesn't mean good, the games are still really twisted and they're obviously not doing this by charity, otherwise they'd simply go to some people on the street, would say "here is some money to help you out" and that'd be it.
@psychokitty71

Lol, you guys realize that you're talking about the difference between communism and capitalism, right? And just like what tends to happen in communism, someone has to force everyone to stay on a level playing field, with everyone staying "equal". I think that's also why they have such a variety of games, because the different games play to different strengths, also making the playing field much more level. Another thing is that they can call for a vote at any time and stop the games. If you notice, no one has called for another vote. To me, personally, the big difference between the VIPs watching the show within that world and us watching the show is that it IS just a show. For us, these are actors, playing parts, and at the end of the series, everyone is alive and well, regardless of what happened to their characters. The VIPs within the show, however, are watching all of these people die. If there is only one winner and there were 456 players, then that's well over 400 people who died. Not the full 455 because of the ones who didn't come back after they all quit, but maybe the staff that keeps getting themselves killed makes up for those numbers. That's a hell of a lot of people to die every year.
@roguechevelle
Жыл бұрын
The Front Man justifies it in his mind as a fair game, it's a twisted idea when you consider these people were taken advantage of because they were desperate due to poverty and debt. And it's not an even playing field if the VIP's or the wealthy never partake in the games, they are the spectators cushy and safe while others fight for their lives. But people do that in the real world, justifying things in their mind.

I wonder if in order to be fair the teams would have to be made by the game makers? For example in the pulling rope game, the main team had disavantages of strenght, and other teams had the strongest people. I thinks is imposible for all the games to be fair for everyone unless they give specific games for everyone, like for example, let's say a game involves running non stop, it wouldn't be fair for number 1, he would lose inmediatly. Even the games we saw, maybe the first one is the most fair cause as long as you keep moving you don't really need to run, but in the second game, the dalgona game, Ali is missing fingers, there is an old guy with most likely not the most stable pulse, and then you have a surgeon. I know all three of them won, but was it trully fair for everyone? Did it take them the same effort? (btw I have seen the whole show so please don't spoil this comment trying to tell me about future games and stuff ;) )
@melodyacosta5939
Жыл бұрын
I guess the true “fairness” comes from not knowing what the game is until it starts, so no one can prepare for it You made some good points with the difference in abilities at the dalgona game, but no one was supposed to know what they were gonna do when choosing a shape, so someone with great hand control could’ve gotten the umbrella and someone like Ali or the old man the triangle or circle, that possibility is what made it “fair” Same with the rope, they just had them make teams without knowing what the game was, those who had a lot of strong men in their team was out of luck or cheating, the game itself was set up to be fair

Random disturbing fact that came back to me when they're discussing the girl with only one kidney. It sounds absolutely awful that they raped her dead body, right? Well, turns out that it's a pretty common problem in mortuaries and funeral homes, to the point that those places try to hire as many women as possible to avoid male staff sexually assaulting cadavers. And it's been going on for millenias! Archaeologists were baffled that Egyptian mummies of women were nearly systematically less well preserved than those of men. Well, turns out that while they'd start embalming the bodies of men right after death, they'd let those of women decompose for a bit first specifically to try and prevent the embalmers from performing necrophilia on the dead women's bodies (the smell of dead people decomposing is absolutely horrendous).

there is no such thing as consent/free-willed choice or fairness in a system that forces you to choose between different flavours of misery, in this case, their lives in the real world and their participation in the games. it gives an illusion of agency at best, but it dictates all outcomes. or worst, it forces people to take responsibility for what's happening to them because of their own "choice". but if you accept the risk of harm because you already experience other harms, is it really the equality, fairness or just?
