I just can’t understand how people think SUB is always and automatically better than DUB. Especially when the fact is when you watch a show or listen to a song and have a strong connection to it, when you hear someone/something different it’s gonna sound a little weird. And for like 98% of SUB watchers that means it sucks and it’s goofy. That’s a ridiculous take and to say the DUB va don’t sound good or put any emotion or effort is stupid and untrue. The AOT DUB is probably the best DUB out there. The stupid argument I hear all the time is that DUB doesn’t have emotion or effort, but then also say that they try too hard and are over the top, which is so contradictory lol. And if y’all actually understood Japanese like fr and were from that culture y’all would have the same feelings towards the SUB VA. The way y’all feel about DUB and how its over the top and goofy, real Japanese people say the same thing about the SUB work. When y’all actually put away yalls biased away y’all can see and admit sometimes some scenes do sound better in SUB and some sounds better in DUB. But to have blind loyalty to a SUB because your mind is used to it is soooooo stupid and sad

A perspective I dont hear people consider when it comes to the way the Titan screams sound is what feelings and thoughts that specific sound choice evokes in the audience. In the sub the titan screams sound like bestial guttural roars, like some sort of monster or savage animal. In the dub the titan screams sound like a high pitched screech, like some sort of dinosaur, alien or demon. Eren's titan is the first one we see that makes any noise, and it has the most iconic cries of all of the titans in the entire series. In season 1 when the titans are the main mystery of the show and their origins are entirely hidden from the audience, the sorts of info we can use to try to piece together what we should expect from them is limited to more or less what they look like, what they sound like and what the cadet education taught the main characters about their biology. Their appearance is an obvious clue towards the human origin, but I think the two different types of screams in dub and sub give very different but both equally interesting takes on where the titans could be coming from. The dub's screech hints towards their otherworldly origins, and also adds context to the reveal of the "devil" slurs the Marleyans use against the Eldians that comes up later on. The sub's roar sounds more like what we'd expect a large primal humanoid to sound like. Its monstrous but still vaguely human, and this is key because of the real origin we learn about towards the end of the series explores just how much the titans are not as alien as they might appear at first glance. I guess my point is that regardless of what you think of either version its interesting what each artistic choice adds to the show.

1:00 I think its simply cause they're not as skilled so they compensate by trying to be over the top. It doesn't seem natural which is why I cannot take dub seriously. It's just not as believable. You have to remember, being a "seiyuu" in japan is like a real profession there. There's schools and professional training. In North America it's not really a thing. Most of the time, they just get actors and actresses to do voice acting.

Yes definitely ^^ especially since anime characters use mostly informal and rude language so using anime JP irl could be quite embarrassing 😅 but also, the Japanese are used to the anime style dubbing so they won't find it weird or be distracted from the seriousness of the content, it's just a cultural difference For ex in English if I had to compare it's like watching a musical or a stage play : they don't talk like irl but if it's your mother tongue you'll accept the dramatic intonations as a part of the acting so you'll appreciate the actors' talent and it won't feel weird, but a foreigner will probably think it's cringey... Language and culture being so closely intertwined, learning about one means learning both it's a fascinating process ^^

Nail on the head. A lot of English dubs are trying to speak English with the same cadence you'd expect from a Japanese VA speaking Japanese, and it feels so unnatural. It reminds me of that overly "emotive" Disney talk, or childrens pantomime speech. It doesn't feel genuine. It feels like an overexaggerated performance that you're expected to not take seriously.

@@christopherpoblete8562 It's still an important distinction. There's a big difference between a story and script being created in your language for you to read, vs having to translate another language and culture into your own language to read. Things are always lost in translation, and it's crystal clear when you do a side by side comparison. Nothing was lost in translation for English Avatar, because it started as an English script for English speaking audiences.

They're using this strong American accent and jargons that throw me off, I have to keep reminding myself that this is an American production catered to an American audience. Also that they need to work around an already existing track that the dialogues need to either cut or lengthen to fit the animation. That I guess explains the cheesy lines... I would rewatch WB's DCAU or Invincible or even Avatar and I don't find any problem like this. Also, what's with the Banshee Titan?!? 😂

The only english dub i acknowledge is only Avatar the legend of Aang 😂 The main problem for english dub is ALWAYS in the voice actor just read the text without knowing the series and character itself. They don't care about emotional damage the character's feel, they don't give a fuck what AoT is about. The japanese dub voice actor always try to become the character itself, they aren't imagining themself as Eren or Reiner, they really are Eren and Reiner in their mind, and everything happen in AoT, they really experience it directly as if they are actual Eren and Reiner. I saw a youtuber that only watch english dub with excuse that they can't read and watch at the same time, and they only know the exaggarating voice acting which is shame on them can't fully understand the joy hearing japanese voice actor "normal" voices

And for the titan screams I truly don’t understand how y’all can say the SUB is better!!! It sounds like a teddy bear growl or like something from a kid’s baby show. In the DUB it sounds Erie and scary, like it’s from out of this world. And honestly the va actors for both armins are squeaky and annoying, that’s how they are supposed to be but I hate when people say the dub sucks because he sounds like a bitch or a nerd…thats how he’s supposed to sound especially when he is younger. The SUB va is literally a women and sounds like a women the entire series but people will say a nerdy sounding boy doesn’t sound correct just because its DUB. And I don’t understand why SUB glazers don’t ever compare the fighting scenes or the screaming scenes, especially from like season 4. That’ll show emotion/effort and range. Bryce papenbrook sometimes does better than Yuki Kaji, and sometimes Yuki Kaji does better than Bryce, but to be biased and unfair because your mind and ears are comfortable and accustomed to a certain person is ridiculous!!!! Most of the time they tie each other in passion, emotion, effort, range and love for the character. Y’all really need to do a better job at doing comparisons without letting your biased dictate the outcome and should get used to listening to a show in a different light and THEN do a actual smart fair comparison.
