I haven’t finished your reaction yet, but a film made by the same crew is Summer Wars, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It has a far tighter story, is more clear, and it’s always made me cry in a good way.

If you want movie suggestions that _should not_ make you cry... I'm afraid I cannot assist as most of those are sequels to anime series where the movie is the completion of the story. I enjoy the emotional damage that anime films bring to me because it helps me remember that there's more to life than the doom and despair that we're fed by most of the media... that and anime has just this way of really giving me a gut punch that western media just doesn't do for me anymore. I do hope you find something that doesn't make you cry at all though... sometimes I know it can get a bit tiresome to constantly cry over media we watch.

In this movie, Suzu actually had quite a bit of psychological trauma about her mother's death shown on the way she can't really sing in the real world and throws up but she can in VR, and she was always confused why her mother chose to risk her life to save a stranger's child and left her in the process. And by the end of this movie, we can see that she has somehow overcome her trauma and has now understood why her mother did what she did before by also helping two strangers and sacrificing what she built for herself. This was seen when she was singing and had a sudden flashback about what her mom did back then, and in the end of the movie she was also moving on from her past by now getting along and responding to her father and regaining back her confidence about singing in the real world which she lost because it was the one thing that she and her mother shared. It's okay to be confused when watching anime movies because these movies are DEEP, even I have to rewatch a bunch of times and even do some research after like interviews and such to truly let the whole plotline sink in. I also totally recommend watching the same director's other movies, especially The Girl Who Leapt through Time, and Wolf Children, and I forgot if it was the same director or not but also The Children Who Chase Lost Voices💗💗 And if you want to watch Weathering with You, I recommend watching Garden of Words first by the same director because his movies are somewhat connected, if you wish it to be, and there are easter eggs in it😆

I think Mamoru Hosoda's works really need to get a lot time to watch again and again to truly understand what the message of the movie is trying to convey because even up till now, everytime I try to watch and read articles about his movies there are still a ton of things that I learn about the movie. But I do understand that Belle can be a bit confusing especially during the last part, I think this movie could've been even more amazing if they haven't incorporated some beauty and the beast elements on it but just made a whole new story and development of Belle and the Dragon in U

the context of the one gal writing a song for the boy, was that she misread how old he was based on his height and manner. Like, he didn't act like an 8th grader, all stern and aloof. So without the understanding of his actual age/grade level, she thought he was older. This is what clued Suzu into The Beast's real identity, because he wasn't acting like an adult, but a younger boy unused to affection.

When Suzu thinks about her mom and stays freeze for a moment is when she realize why her mom did that sacrifice and that she's doing the same for those kids, and i think the lights on the chest means they are expressing their feelings and understanding others feelings just by the sound, you can see that also on character faces while they sing, like they are trying to say something to Suzu

It's about opening up to the people around you and that you shouldn't hide yourself from others. Suzu shut out her father and abandoned the thing that connected her from her mother. The story is also about connecting and caring for other people even if there are no romantic feelings involved. Suzu couldn't understand why her mother gave her life for someone she didn't knew but started to understand it by meeting the beast. She wanted to help the beast simply because she felt he needed help even if he couldn't voice it himself because he felt that every person would disregard it even if he would open up to them. The beast fell in love out of pure thankfullness that someone actually cared for him and wanted to help him and Suzu understood it because she realised what drove her mother to give up everything for someone in need.

I know I'm late to the party on this, but I thought I'd clarify the light in the chest thing. So, early in the movie, Suzu bonks her head in the real world, and on her phone we see her digital avatar get a red mark in the same spot. Basically showing the audience that U can show physical injuries. The Beast's back is full of scars, which we later learn is a result of receiving verbal abuse from his father while protecting his brother. The light on Suzu's chest was her broken heart. And when the rest of U saw how much pain she was in, their hearts broke too. Thank you for attending my Ted talk.

SPOILERS!! the relationships with her crush was just that the guy thought of her as a younger sister to look after. so no romantic thing came out of it. as for the beast, apparently it was just a kid, so nothing came from that either. just a friend she cared for. basically the protagonist romances never ended up becoming fruitful. The cyberspace of U was already explained at the beginning. Maybe you are not familiarized with the anime concept of a virtual world. But basically thats what U is. Think of it as the future version of the internet, but they have virtual avatars representing them in the virtual world which they connect via some advance PC of sorts. That sums up what U is. As for the ending domestic issue, that got glossed over for it's conclussion, because they don't explain how that all got settled, it was left to the viewer imagination to fill in the gaps. It was just assumed they had settled the issue in some way or another without delving into that because the movie ran out of airing time. So yes it was unfinished in that sense because that was left without a clear resolution. But the beast did say he wouldn't continue being abused and would stand up for himself, maybe call child services with help of Suzu for starters. The story is about a young girl with past trauma trying to reconcile with her mother's heroic act of saving someone else but leaving her without a mother. This did damage to her, and the cyberspace U helped me overcome some of that trauma by singing as a cyber idol. And at the ending she overcomes another hurdle of self esteem by being able to perform as herself rather than some fantasy beautiful cyber idol which was famously known for. So there are various things going on here, and some of it was not properly explained in it's ending resolution, those expecting romantic relationships to bloom were left dissapointed. It's by no means perfect, but i still loved it.

I wanted to wait until the end to hear her final thoughts but I can't, I see she missed many points about emotional traumas here. Also when Hiro says that Suzu will loose everything she worked for, and she (the reactor) says that actually everything was Hiro's doing, I confirmed she didn't catch it 😅😅 "with Suzu's hard work" Hiro's meant the growth in Suzu's self-esteem... Ok let's keep watching

My thoughts on Kakeshi Kun 1) He lied about him being super happy with sons, Kei and Tomo, despite the death of his wife to the public while on the news. 2) He physically, psychologically and verbally abused his sons, Kei and Tomo. 3) He assaulted Suzu in the cheek!! That freak of a single father should be held accountable for his abusive behavior!

I feel so bad that this confused you so much... For myself, I felt like the story was more about Suzu's personal growth - everything else was simply a catalyst for helping her overcome her self-doubt, and allowing her to start healing from feeling like her mom abandoned her. I also found that suspending my disbelief helped while I was watching the first time, mostly because the VR environment was just too far for what we can achieve these days. I hope "I want to eat your pancreas" and "Weathering With You" work out for you better - they are two of my favorites, and I rate them both much higher than "Belle", but because there isn't anywhere to legally stream them, I didn't want to suggest those. Please forgive me for the less than stellar suggestion❤

I don't think she was _literally_ Belle again at 48:22. I'm pretty sure it was just a visual metaphor for Suzu gaining the confidence she had when she was Belle. It's interesting that you felt this wasn't your cup of tea. This one actually slipped under my radar when it came out. But my mom, who has only seen, like, 2 anime movies in her entire life and doesn't go to the theaters that often in general went to see it and loved it so much that she immediately texted me if I wanted to go see it with her because she wanted an excuse to see it twice, lol.
