Time for the last lore explanation of mine until after the release of the DLC. For this one, I will go over what is mostly agreed upon for the story. The most important thing to understand about the story that is confirmed is that the DLC takes place in a dream. Specifically the dream of Miquella, son of Radagon and Queen Marika. Though Miquella didn't just randomly dream of the Land of Shadow, he chose to dream of this place to find someone. You see, the Land of Shadow existed before Miquella. It was created at the same time as the Golden Order and potentially the Lands Between were. The Land of Shadow is a side product that Queen Marika didn't expect. This all leads to the fact that Miquella was not the first person to enter the Land of Shadow as an outsider. The person Miquella is looking for is a woman named St. Trina. St. Trina is very related to the concept of sleep, there is even an in-game item called Trina's lily, which is used to create multiple things that inflict sleep. It is said that Trina suddenly disappeared one day without a trace. Miquella believes St. Trina went to the Land of Shadow, so he searches for her to see if she can help him with an unknown plan. Also if you didn't already know, the person falling at 3:20 was St. Trina. Another person you must understand more is Messmer. Messmer is a man of unknown origins who has been said by the game director to be on the same level or possibly more powerful than the demigod children of Marika. When Marika left the Land of Shadow to go and form the Golden Order, Messmer rose up and conquered the now abandoned land. In this conquest, the event shown in the trailer takes place. This event is Messmer and his army invading and destroying the place that is possibly the capital city of the Land of Shadow. Here we see the lion beast, which is actually 3 omen controlling it in a way that could be compared to a dragon dance in real life, charge at Messmer. Messmer promptly kills all 3 of the omens controlling the beast and impales them on 3 large spikes, which you can actually see in that scene. As of now, this is everything we know about the Land of Shadow. When the DLC does release there will probably be dozens of much more talented people explaining everything about it, so I will probably not do another one of these lore explanations.

lands between is the dream, remember this game director actively misleads people, so does the writer. Everyone has made complete and solid assumptions about the parentage of all the children, as we are told without thinking deeper.

No, it is not confirmed that the DLC takes place in a dream, all we know is that it takes place in the Land of Shadow, that we don't know if it's in a dream or not. And, no, he's not looking for St. Trina. "I presume you, too, are keen to know. Just what Kind Miquella is doing here." (From the Gameplay Trailer). This sentence, obviously, indicates that they're going to explain what Miquella is doing in the Land of Shadow. "And so Kindly Miquella would abandon everything. His golden flesh, his blinding strength. Even his fate." (From Story Trailer). When "Even his fate" is mentioned, they show us St. Trina, which means (obviously, once again) that he is not looking for St. Trina, which means more like he abandoned this fate of his to become St. Trina to do something on the Land of Shadow. English is not my first language, so my bad if there's any mistake.

@@Kayque1 It may not be confirmed that the DLC takes place in a dream, but I hope you can at least see the reasoning behind that conclusion. In an interview with Miyazaki, the game director, in a late march issue of Weekly Famitsu, there is a paragraph that was later translated to English that explained that the "DLC’s area is not directly connected to the main game’s map, and is accessed via a warp, with the entrance being the withered arm hanging from the cocoon in the Mohg, Lord of Blood boss fight area.” And since Miquella is not really dead, just absent from his physical self, it may be more of an absence from consciousness, such as a dream. It is possible that when Miquella originally entered his cocoon in the Haligtree, he did it not only to grow himself and the Haligtree into adulthood, but also to search for someone as he slept. The final piece of evidence which can tie all of the previous points together is the Bewitching Branch. The Bewitching Branch is created from Miquella Lily and a Sacramental Bud and its description says that the Bewitching Branch is a "Tree branch blessed with an incantation of unalloyed gold." This all points to the fact that this item was originally created by Miquella. However, what makes the Bewitching Branch is not the important part. The part that matters is where the recipe is unlocked from. The recipe is discovered from Fervor's Cookbook number 3. The description of Fervor's Cookbooks says that they are "A record of crafting techniques left by a man who was utterly captivated by St. Trina. He continued the search for her in his slumber" The fact that an item infused with unalloyed gold, a signature of Miquella's abilities, is in these cookbooks leads to the fact that Miquella is the one who most likely wrote them. Since it states that the author of the cookbooks is searching for St. Trina in his slumber, and we know from the trailers that Miquella is present in the Land of Shadow, everything is pointing to the fact that Miquella is searching for St. Trina in the Land of Shadow, and that he accessed this place by dreaming. With the DLC being accessed at the location of Miquella's physical form, it is likely that we'll travel to the Land of Shadow by entering his dream. To be clear, I don't think that the Land of Shadow is just Miquella's dream. This land has clearly existed before Miquella was even born. All I believe is that the only way to pass through the veil which obscures the Land of Shadow is to be dreaming.

We simply don’t know much of anything about the setting of this DLC (expansion). From Software’s DLCs harken back to the expansions of old (like Diablo 2), because they are so substantial. We’ve been waiting literal years for this DLC and we expect it to rival the size of one of their previous games. We only have vague guesses as to the story and setting. All From’s games have cryptic settings, and the DLCs usually answer questions we weren’t even asking while opening up even more intriguing ones.

Nobody really knows 100% what's going on in the trailer, we are only somewhat familiar with bits of pieces of lore from the characters. The game is genuinely like an interactive mystery and you find clues about what really happened and a whole genre of youtubers have made a lot of $$$ off of lore videos because the community loves the themes

This place is called the land of shadow/shadow realm. It's set in the same time period that the base game takes place in. The tree is not the erdtree, this is a differant tree. That trailer is showing what happened in this area in the past. All we know is that we are following miquella to find out what he is doing in this place. It's going to be a wild ride.
