National Lampoon was a popular humor magazine in the US, known for its savage and adult flavor humor compared to the more juvenile MAD magazine, peaking probably in the late 1970's and early 80's. They branded several great comedies early on, the first being the National Lampoon's Animal House. Killing the dog is on brand for the magazine. One of their most famous covers featured a photo of a worried looking dog with a gun held to its head, and a promise to spare the dog if you buy the magazine. The magazine eventually collapsed and the name was bought by someone who licensed the brand out to a lot of awful, terrible, worthless comedies, so the brand name by itself is no longer a guarantee. The Chevy Chase vacation movies are great, particularly this one and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Wally World is 100% taking the piss out of Disney. The owner even looks like Uncle Walt. Oh, and one more note. As Wally World isn't real, they filmed the rides at a couple of Six Flags parks in California. They're a popular chain of theme parks, a bit more accessible than the Disney parks.

When I saw this in the theater with my sisters, it got to that scene and my oldest sister blurted out, "Gross, he's just putting the dirty dishes back in the cupboard!" and half the women in the audience gasped and many men just started cracking up. At 15:00 when you were asking "Is that...him?". If you were thinking of Bill Murray, the answer is "no"- but it is one of his brothers :). Great movie and great reaction. I was just wondering if the guy who gives him directions is the same guy who plays Chuck Berrie's cousin in Back to the Future.
@JohnnyUtah15

I just checked and, it’s not him. The guy giving directions is Nathan Cook (1950-1988) died of an allergic reaction to penicillin. The guy in Back to the Future is Harry Waters Jr. (b. 1953).

I was 8 years old when this movie came out. I've been to, or lived in, every city in the opening montage. Heck, the dinosaurs are located just outside my home town. The end of the film was shot at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. So yes, it's a very real place 😃

BLT with plenty of bacon and several slices of vine grown tomatoes. Mayo on both slices of honey wheat bread with a little hot sauce mixed with the mayo. Secret is to toast the bread and salt/pepper the tomatoes. 🤤

When you were trying to figure out the man at the check-out desk of the camping ground, you clearly saw the similarities between him and Bill Murray. This is Brian Doyle-Murray, Bill's older brother. He is also a comedian and was the anchor of "The National Lampoon Radio Hour", a comedy program from 1973 to 1975. Other notable cast from the show included Richard Belzer, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Harold Ramis.

The car running after turned off... was a real thing. My dad bought my mom an early 80s Dodge station wagon and it would run for 10 to 20 seconds after shut off and it sounded exactly like the one in the movie. She hated that car and complained about it for decades.😅

My car from the late 90s will sometimes make noise for 10 seconds after turning off the engine, too. It's not a puttering like in the movie, though, but a sound like a vacuum cleaner. I think that it's the radiator cooling off the engine and happens only on the hottest of days. The first few times that it happened, I had the same reaction as Mrs. Griswold: "Why is the car still running?"😂

I don't particularly like this movie, but I LOVE IT when seeing your reactions and commentary!!! Well done as always, Dawn! Always guaranteed to put a smile on my face!!!! (No, it is not a real place but a straight on spoof of Disney. To me, the best is "Mr. Walley" who is a dead ringer for Walt Disney.

Favorite sandwich: French Dip. Roast beef on French bread with au jus for the sauce. "Lampoon" is satirical parody. "National Lampoon" was a comedic magazine.

I've got the same problem with motion sickness, where I used to like boats and carnival rides and so forth, but the older I get the easier it is to make me sick. I used to ride motorcycles, but that also makes me sick now. I've been to multiple doctors about it, and none of them have any more to say about it beyond "This sometimes happens to people when they get older." It's so bad that I have even got sick changing the oil under my car. Life isn't fair. Sure I can take medication for it, but that medication puts me to sleep! Not good on a motorcycle.

Back in the olden Days I rode My 1974 Yamaha TX-500 on many long trips. I wasn't a World Class Rider, but I was a very good Rider. My balance and situational awareness was excellent. This stood Me in good stead and fortunately I never had a significant mishap although I had a Couple of Close Calls. An old Friend who still rides & is the same age as Me, was wanting Me to buy a Bike and take a long trip with him someplace. The Idea appealed to Me greatly. Sadly I don't trust My balance nor My reaction time. And older people don't mend as fast. I had to decline. I doubt I will ever Ride again, but Man, do I have amazing Memories.

@@thrummer1953 I rode for the better part of 30 years and have a lot of great memories. Almost all of it on Triumphs of various models, from a 64 TT special to a 2011 Street Triple. (Probably my favorite was the latter.) It just got to the point where I'd be so sick I couldn't stand up after about 10 minutes of riding. The TX 500 was a great bike, and I would have loved to own one. Ergonomics and performance were about the same as my 64 Triumph, but with better reliability and superior brakes. But I've always been in love with Triumphs.

National Lampoon, Inc. is a company formed in 2002 in order to use the brand name "National Lampoon" in comedy and entertainment following the tradition of its magazine predecessor, The National Lampoon.[1] In the words of its prospectus, the role of the company was to "develop, produce, provide creative services and distribute National Lampoon branded comedic content through a broad range of media platforms." Since 2002, the company overhauled its corporate infrastructure several times.

Dawn, I also love a good sandwich. I go through phases where I really like a certain deli meat and or bread. Currently, I am really liking the Boar's Head Cajun Turkey and colby jack cheese on a brioche bun with mayo on the bottom and a little horseradish sauce on top...perfect amount of spicy. I had an uncle that had a favorite sandwich he would make that literally made me want to hurl. Peanut butter, mayo and tomato....he would mix the peanut butter and mayo together until it made something that resembled baby poo, spread that on white bread and add slices of tomato. It was the nastiest damn thing ever, I would rather eat dirt! He was the uncle that everyone in the family knew was nanners...he did other goofy shite as well...like our very own cousin Eddie.

Hi Dawn - Hamburger Helper was a staple for a lot of lower middle class people. You could buy cheap ground beef and then get a few different flavors and noodle types of Hamburger Helper and you have a meal (minus a vegetable). It was the noodles and a seasoning packet, I think. I guess Eddie likes the noodles and seasoning.

There are sequels to this one! National Lamppon's European Vacation is pretty rubbish but does have Eric Idle in a small role. Christmas Vacation is hilarious!!! And Vegas Vacation pretty much sucks too, but I watched it several times because I thought that Marisol Nichols that played the dauhter in that movie was sooooo hot!! (not compared to you, though. ;D) Funny thing, each movie have different actors for both the kids.... My favourite sandwich would be white bread, like a soft pain riche or such, with ham, lettuce, cucumber..... paprika? Peppers? Paprika. And.... yeah, maybe that's enough? No cheese, thank you. Or perhaps one with meatballs and that red beet gushy smush, whatever it's called in british. Yum yum!!! Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Sweden

Okay, National Lampoon was a popular comedy Magazine in the 1960s -1980s. It was basically started by a group of students from Harvard University. 2nd. John Hughes wrote the original short story for National Lampoon Magazine. But when he turned it into a script for Warner Brothers, Harold Ramis, the director, had to rewrite 60% of it because it was a little too racist for Warner Brothers. But John Hughes still gets the writing credit for the movie.
