Hello Michael, Ralph & Cody [A Lot's Happened Since Yesterday!] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome [BACK] to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, [song 13 of 15 from the setlist - the entire concert was a blast!..] together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. I am impressed by the analysis you did, even with partial information. I hope with all my heart that you will continue to explore Nightwish's music. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen of n [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I just posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: kzitem.infocommunity 🤘

I am a 54 year old metal head, most all music I listen to tend to be heavy metal, hard rock, and classic rock. I am American and never heard of this band or woman in 2020, and I was knocked on my ass by them. They do hard stuff, they do soft stuff, they do melodic stuff, but no matter what they do it is amazing. Floor is the greatest singer I have ever heard, and this band is right up there with the legendary bands I have always enjoyed. I hope you guys continue on your journey.

It was a magical moment? Ten months before, they had to fire their vocalist in the middle of an American tour, in between shows. Their only option was to phone a singer that could take over in heartbeat. They had toured with Floor about 10 years before and knew her skills, and that she was currently available. They phoned her at her sister’s wedding in Holland, asked her to fly to America and learn a 15 song setlist in 48 hours (there is a documentary….). She did, and on October 1, 2012 in Seattle she nailed it, they survived, and she continued on as their guest vocalist into South America, back to Europe, Australia, Asia. Just before this concert, in early August 2013, they asked her to be the permanent singer for the band (something that was never in doubt) and this particular concert, headlining in front of 82,000 fans, was the culmination of their acceptance that they had truly made the best choice for the band! And 82k fans who had heard about the new singer, and had possibly bought tickets thinking they would see the old one, were jacked about what they were about to experience. It did not disappoint!

To the guy that said he use to follow Nightwish, this is Tarja’s song. She has been gone since 2005, & Floor really powered the song up. What a beautiful enhancement it is. Second Singer Anette Olzon, Floor replaced in 2013. This was Floor’s first show as a permanent band member, although it wasn’t announced until the new album was released later in the year. She was asked to finish the tour for Anette in October, 2012, so she just had her 10th Anniversary with Nightwish. The band is Finnish, while Floor is from the Netherlands. Troy that also became a member in 2013, that plays guitar, & pipes is from England somewhere. Floor is married to the drummer of Sabaton, a Swedish metal band, & they live in Sweden. Floor says she is a Netherlands girl in a Finnish band, that lives in Sweden. Covers half of Europe. They are on tour now, shows almost every night, & she just had surgery, & facing Chemo in February. What a woman, but I know she had quite a scare, but saying all is well. I hope is taking care your f herself! Love our Floor!

She sang the Dutch national anthem at the Dutch Formula 1 Grand Prix and she speaks Dutch with her daughter in Sweden. She also speaks English, German and Swedish fluently and a little bit of Finnish. She focused her new solo career (besides Nightwish) on the Netherlands and a bit in Germany. I would not be surprised if she will receive an knighthood soon by the Dutch King.

Their performances are incredibly consistent from one concert to the next, and from one year to the next (and now, from decade to decade.) The secret sauce is the click track that the drummer has in his ear. That keeps him, the backing track (the London Philharmonic is their "studio" band), the pyros, and the lights (and even the fireworks... check out "The Greatest Show on Earth) all tightly synced, and the rest of the band follows his lead. Lot of pressure on one guy, but both of their drummers have been superb Peart-level musicians (as well as Bonham-level beasts.) End result is that you can line up, side-by-side, performances separated by years, almost note-for-note. Floor's vocals have evolved, as have some of Emppu's guitar riffs, but that basic consistency is what lets the fans become an integral part of the show. And let's not overlook Floor's stage presence ... she takes charge of a crowd the way Freddie Mercury did in his heyday. (What Nordic metal band doesn't need a six-foot leather-clad Valkyrie as a frontwoman?) You'll get no end of suggestions for further reaction videos. (The whole damned Wacken concert is top-notch, just for starters.) If you want to hear symphonic metal beyond what even Nightwish does, it's hard to beat "Sancta Terra" (Floor again, with Epica and Simone Simons.)

This is one of the top 5 concerts of all time! They did a DVD from this concert called "Showtime, Storytime". Every song in this 2 hours is absolutely perfect. They are all hyper talented. If you look this song, you have not even scratched the surface of Nightwish. Tuomas Holopainen is a genius. Many called him a modern mozart (he is creating all this musik and lyrics). Floor Jansen is not from Finnland, she is from Netherlands! She was singing the netherlands anthem this year at the Formula 1 GP in Zandfort. The band is finnish. On 4.Dec.22 they are playig finally in my home city Vienna in Austria. Im waiting now 2 years for this gig, it was 3 times canceled, because of the corona pandemic. But this year everything is fine :) If you guys are ready for more art from Nightwish, than go for "The greatest show on Earth" live in Tampere 2015. Everyone of their concerts also has great audio that you rarely get from any other band. Whoever does their audio is amazing. Also, the pipe organ is a false front. Tuomas plays two to three KORG synths hidden behind that false front. This song was the 13th song of 15 in the set.

Greetings from Nightwish Army, Palm Springs, CA! Plenty of heavier material in the vast catalog, no bad songs. This entire concert, Wacken (pron: VAW-Kehn) 2013 is a masterpiece of live recording and performance. It's close to perfect for live! The (faux) pipe organ pipes make up a custom wine rack, converted into a multi keyboard stand with wine holder. Watch below for a comment from Gabriel Bardac who will provide you with a band bio and list of links to best performances!

A big welcome to the Nightwish Universe 👍. You are spot on most of the time 👍 As you are already flooded in info, comments and suggestions, I will just add some facts: What people experience is nothing religious - the official word is a 'Floorgasm' - not kidding, and very common during a Nightwish concert. And please don't be mistaken - you have only scratched the surface of Nightwish's and Floor's capabilities within this one 😁 - only around 12 - 14%... - still not kidding! On the Wacken 2013 concert, Floor only did old songs, written to the two former singers - not for her incredible voice and breath techniques. That comes from 2015 and up - and Floor has evolved since, and nowadays nothing and nobody comes even close to abilities. Trust me - she is the most versatile, powerful, skilled and talented storyteller ever. And that brings me to the stories - all Nightwish stories are deep - very deep poetic lyrics, often with quotes from scientists and writers (Darwin, Sagan, Dawkins and Shakespeare etcetera etcetera) - and you won't really understand Nightwish, before you dive into the lyrics.. I know all the best music comes from the US - that's completely okay. But Nightwish are not restrained by moneymakers to making radio friendly songs at max 4 minutes - they are free to create deep meaning full stories - or tribute songs like 'Shoemaker' (tribute to Eugene Shoemaker) - you should try the version from their newest album 'Human Nature' - written to Floor's voice. And then let Ralf have a go on singing...and breathing 😏. He may skip the last incredible part 👍😁 By the way - Floor does the live!!! That's how we Europeans prefer a tribute song. By the way - pop? - Floor made a version of Lady Gaga's 'Shallow' - in a TV-show called Beste Zangers. Talk about versatility, emotions and skills... And again - a big welcome to the Nightwish Universe from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 (Amsterdam is the Capital of the Netherlands 🇳🇱) - not Finland 🇫🇮 😁 And please read Gabriel's comments once more and use his links, while they have some of the best audio

This was song 13 in a 15-song setlist. For the opener, check out "Dark Chest of Wonders." The "pipe organ" is a keyboard stand modelled after a famous sculpture at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He's got a couple of Korg synths back there. And a built-in wine bottle holder. He loves to keep a bottle of cabernet sauvignon back there for an occasional swig. The audience was 82,000. The orchestral intermezzo is not a pee break, as many reactors assume. It is a part of the score, part of the story. During that intermezzo, you're hearing THE London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metro Voices of London gospel choir. The guitarist, Emppu, plays either simple or complex solos doing just exactly what is needed to support the song---what the composer called for, no more, no less. But make no mistake, he can fuckin' shred when he wants to!! 😆 And, yes, we call her the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal!

Nightwish goes light, medium and heavy. This was medium. They usually start and end concerts heavy. This was 13/15 and Floor's favorite song. Floor describes her warmup exercises here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xIiu3XWVhaaKfKg

Emppu is muting the lower strings at the end of his solo. That keeps them from vibrating sympathetically and shortening the sustain time of the note he’s holding so it rings out as long as he wants it to

Nice reaction! I just wish the guy who knew the song wouldn't have spoiled so much (before and during the song) for the others. Nightwish is best discovered as a surprise. Every song is different. For next songs, please go in blind! And avoid talking when the song is playing, you missed the whole interlude talking about how much you love interludes lol! But great to see your enthusiasm and insights, I really hope you continue with Nightwish!

ha, see how energetic the audience is, they've been there all day and Nightwish was the closer for the Festival on Sat. night and they're still pumped up!! Ok, one thing the band is from Finland but Floor and her "Dutch windmill" is from Netherlands. And she is a vocal coach and voice teacher.

You mentioned The Phantom. She actually did it in the Dutch tv program Beste Zangers. Check it out. When you're into progressive I would like to suggest the Dutch musician Ayreon - The day that the world brakes down. I visited Nightwish last Monday in Amsterdam and what a night it was!

Funny you should mention Phantom of the Opera... They cover Phantom and just played it on stage for the first time since 2005. There isn't an official video (YET!) of Floor's version, but the bootlegs are worth a watch. And, there is official video from 2005 with Tarja that is also worth a watch.

Great reaction! 👍🤘 Greetings from the UK! Info dump for you below!😁 Nightwish is a glorious rabbit hole of awesome, with world class song-writing, musicianship and arguably (or unarguably to most who've heard her enough😉) the best and most versatile female vocalist alive today (maybe ever), the Valkyrie Queen of metal herself Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen). Floor is a classically trained soprano and has a vocal range of more than 3 octaves (C3 to F6+). Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had (and my personal favourite), she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today. The vocalists are/were - Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals. Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals. Floor Jansen - (2012-Present) - (Netherlands) - Extremely diverse vocals, from deep growls to full on opera. The other band members are/were - Tuomas Holopainen - Song writer/composer and Keyboards. (Finland) Marko Hietala - Bassist and vocals. (Finland) 2001 - 2021 Emppu Vuorinen - Guitarist (Finland) Jukka Nevalainen - Drums (Finland) Retired in 2014 due to health issues Troy Donockley - Multi-instrumentalist and Vocals. (United Kingdom) Kai Hahto - Drums (Finland) - 2014 to Present Jukka Koskinen - Bassist (Finland) 2022 to Present Floor herself is Dutch and is another glorious goldmine of awesome as she has a lot of non-Nightwish related stuff (including 2 other bands, After Forever & ReVamp) and a recently launched solo career that she has been involved that are all pretty amazing as well, she is also an accomplished song writer herself. She is also an absolutely lovely, funny, smart and grounded person (in fact all the band members are exceedingly down to earth individuals). She has her own channel here on KZitem where she has posted covers of songs as well as her solo stuff. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter/composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. They are hugely popular across in most of the world but for some reason still not very well known in the US. The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is EXTREMELY varied. The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set. Nighwish are almost always better experienced with LIVE versions of their songs if at all possible. Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer, they have multiple concerts though all of which are superb. Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Romanticide, Storytime, Ever Dream, Ghost River, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken). Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance. Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version. Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way. Prepare for the Nightwish army to arrive and enjoy your Nightwish journey, I know I did!😎🤘

I know what you mean, I was there yesterday, still hyped. Evanesance is nice and I get that Americans think of that when they hear Nightwish for the first time. But there is really no comparison. Nightwish is metal, not rock, and they have so much more dept and variety in songs.

It was the 13th song in the set out of 15. She had unbelievable control, range and versitility but her vocal stamina is almost more remarkable than that, because she can do a song like this so deep into a setlist, and still have energy for 2 more neither of which are cakewalks. LOL I saw your vocalist up in the top right's eyes bug out when she absolutely NUKED that g#/a♭ 5 at the end. You can watch Floor (she's Dutch, btw, the rest of the band is from Finland) and stay dispassionate all you want until she goes and throws something like that at you 😃

The keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen is the composer, lyrics writer and music arranger and called a 'Metal Mozart' and musical genious of this century. Each member is hugely talented musicians who do not try to outshine with their solo but they play what serves the music. Nightwish fans are so loyal and passionate, that no matter what any other band you'll make a reaction video of, will not raise as many comments.

Amsterdam is in the Netherlands, you know the country that founded New Amsterdam aka New York, Brooklyn and Harlem and Floor is from the Netherlands one of the most dense countries in Europe when it comes to population. Finland is way more up in Europe and is known for the reindeers, they have way more beautiful nature then the windmills we have in the Netherlands. Oh and we have lots of cows that produce the Gouda cheese lol.
