You hit the nail on the head. Radiohead's first priority seems to be to evolve as artists and achieve the best expression they can. If it alienates their audience, so be it. That's what happened in 2000 when they released Kid A, which was panned by a LOT of people who expected them to just make another OK Computer.

Some songs and artists allow you to meet the music on your terms; but with this song, and particularly this album as a whole, you have to meet the music on *its* terms, or risk being alienated from it entirely. That's pretty much Radiohead in a nutshell, I guess. Their commitemnet to their own creativity and authenticity is why I love them so dearly.

Like you were saying, I think what sets Radiohead (and many other wonderful artists) apart from their commercial contemporaries is their foremost priority to create whatever work of art they want. And I think I gravitate towards the unusually different, or even pieces I don't like at first, within the world of music because those types of songs are sincere. Other people can enjoy popular music (and I do too a lot of the time), and there is a niche of music for everyone, I think. But I just love hearing new sounds and feeling new emotions from artists like this. Radiohead is definitely respected for good reason. I love most of their music, and I hope other artists continue to inspire like they have. Thanks Erol for the great video and discussion!

Just loved your comments after the song. Nails it! For me Radiohead is like an abstract paiting that needs you to keep your attention to imerse on...They challenge you to listen to music in a different way, and if you do this just once its like "a point of no return".

I love this song so much. Top 2 of my top 3 favourite bands are Radiohead and Deftones. The other is Meshuggah but I would never ask Erol to react to them haha. Anyway, thanks Mr.Erol. Great reaction

The backmasking at the very end was Thom saying "Half of my life... Half of my life... Half of my life... Half of my life." The reason for this is that the album, A Moon Shaped Pool, was written by him in the midst of a very difficult divorce from his wife, Rachel Owen. Someone he was married to for 12 years, however, they were together for a total of 23 (Thom being 46 years old when it happened, hence, half of his life). During that time, members of the band stated that the situation was pretty bad and Thom was going through a really difficult time. Many of the songs on the album were fuelled by their separation. The closing track, True Love Waits, being the most heart-wrenching among them. From pain comes great art, though, as that album is brilliant from beginning to end.

The "half of my life" thing is actually speculation. According to live versions, Thom actually says "careful, my love".
@separator94
Ай бұрын
@@gpeddino According to live performances lots of people say he's saying "Half of my life" or "Half of my love." You can also listen to the studio version played backwards and the word "careful" is definitely not in there. It's "Half of my ......."

@@gpeddino It's hard to tell in live performances since Thom's accent is so thick. I've seen them perform it live a few times and it always sounded to me like 'half of my luurff.'(lol) Definitely half-of-my something. I'm guessing life since that's what the majority of people hear it as. Plus the fact that he spent exactly half of his life in that relationship makes a lot of sense for the line. It was also backmasked which is symbolic for looking backwards.

@@gpeddino It's been confirmed that 'half of my life' is what he's saying. In every live performance he says it into the microphone somewhere between the 4 and 4-1/2 minute mark. He sings it multiple times forward in order to play it back backwards. Look up the video on KZitem titled Radiohead - Daydreaming (HD) Live In Paris 2016 (Day 2). You can easily read his lips, as well as hear him, saying "Half of my life" in good clarity.

@@zach4656 Maybe that's the case, but I'm not a fan of setting something like this in stone, specially the meaning regarding how long his marriage lasted. Thom himself has never said anything on the matter (probably because it's something very personal) and lots of wrong information has been spread because one source will write something and lots of people will just assume it's true. An example: several people will say that the strings in Burn The Witch are played "col legno" (with the wooden part of the bow) but that's simply because the writer of a Rolling Stone article assumed it so. Jonny himself has denied this and said that the string players used guitar picks, but the wrong information is still widely spread. Don't get me wrong, that's just something that gets me a little worked up.

Radiohead pushes boundaries. Swift pushes attendance records. Aram Khachaturian pushed Soviet/Armenian Nationalism. Music serves many different purposes. Take a moment and you can see beauty in each.

@@sagittated It is not nationalism as in Hitler. It is nationalism as in a small country in an oppressive Soviet collective. Armenia was inconsequential in the Soviet identity. Aram sought to bring his countrymen higher. I am not pro-Soviet or pro-Nationalism.
