What’s *WILD* is that she had mentioned in an interview that she wanted to work with Imogen Heap (the sole co-writer and co-producer on the track) and Imogen’s manager heard about it. He got tix to her RED Tour that came through town, met her and said he managed Imogen. She said, “I’m free Sunday.” So her manager calls Imogen and says Taylor is coming on Sunday. Imogen had no warning! She was in Iceland. She got home, was not very familiar with Taylor at all - thought she’d arrive with a massive entourage of “writers” and “producers” …but it was just Taylor and her guitar. They came up with the foundation of the song in less than 3 hours. They only recorded two takes. Taylor said “we got it,” after take 2. Taylor left, on her way to her next tour stop… then Imogen finished producing and mastering the track. Just two incredible artists meeting for the first time and making true magic.

this song from my understanding is about two thing. one is about recovering from her eating disorder, which she talks about in her documentary. the other comes from a speech she gave before playing this during her tour where she talks about being sexually assaulted and having to go to court. its a very powerful speech about being believed. so i interpret that as finally being done with what he did to her, being clean of him. but taylor purposefully tries to write in a way that everyone can relate to and take their own meaning from, whether anout an ex, sobriety, or assault.

Something I really appreciate about Darriel and Ashton, is that when you pause for commentary its with purpose. At least for me, the audience, can tell you really are enjoying the music, and thinking about the story Taylor is trying to tell. You aren't trying to tell the audience what the song means, as Swifties we already know, you do tell us how the music makes you feel. And that's why you guys are my favorite.

1989 was a master piece in it's time. Clean was everything when it came out. I feel like once Taylors version come out I might fall in love with the album all over again. Great reaction! I see comments about this song being about her sexual assault case but it’s not. This song is about one of her ex, I believe it’s about Harry Styles. The time line of their on and off relationship just fits. Also In an interview with Elle in May 2015, Taylor shared the real story behind the song: «'Clean' I wrote as I was walking out of Liberty in London. Someone I used to date - it hit me that I’d been in the same city as him for two weeks and I hadn’t thought about it. When it did hit me, it was like, ‘Oh, I hope he’s doing well’. And nothing else. And you know how it is when you’re going through heartbreak. A heartbroken person is unlike any other person. Their time moves at a completely different pace than ours. It’s this mental, physical, emotional ache and feeling so conflicted. Nothing distracts you from it. Then time passes, and the more you live your life and create new habits, you get used to not having a text message every morning saying, ‘Hello, beautiful. Good morning.’ You get used to not calling someone at night to tell them how your day was. You replace these old habits with new habits, like texting your friends in a group chat all day, and planning fun dinner parties, and going out on adventures with your girlfriends, and then all of a sudden one day you’re in London and you realize you’ve been in the same place as your ex for two weeks and you’re fine. And you hope he’s fine. The first thought that came to my mind was - I’m finally clean.» Taylor Swift

This song is one of my all time favs of Taylor’s. It’s soooooo good! Thank you for reacting to this!!! To me, the drought is when that relationship that you’re so used to just goes completely cold. That no contact, that sudden stop in communication where you feel like you’re going through withdrawal symptoms from a drug. It’s SO painful and so relatable if you’ve ever experienced that type of heartbreak. And her not risking contact with him now that she’s clean. Ugh so good.

clean was originally written about getting over a heartbreak but taylor stated multiple times that she loves that so many people connect to it in a form of becoming better from a traumatic event or addiction. on the reputation tour she sang clean and dedicated it to SA victims/survivors after she experienced how traumatic court events are in cases like these (people please correct me if i left something out)

This is honestly one of my favorite TS songs because she used the word "clean" in two different contexts: 1) to clean yourself from the mess of the past and start over again (using a lot of water-related imagery to drive her point) and 2) to clean yourself - purge yourself, even - from the person/thing that you crave the most and caused this addiction (using "sober", "won't give in" "just because you're clean don't mean you don't miss it). She recognizes that the experiences was messy and she has to "clean" up to move on, but also she knows that she cannot go on craving it and indulging in it again (because it felt good) lest she fall into that mess again. She had to break the cycle. Taylor is truly a wordsmith. I still remember how I felt listening to this song for the first time and it giving me goosebumps. It gives me joy that you discovered this song when you did.

I would have loved to have heard y’all react to the lyric piece of the song where she says, ‘10 months sober’ bringing even another meaning to ‘clean’ referring to sober being her time after the relationship, as though the relationship was a toxic drug she became ‘clean’ from. That metaphor was really well-written, in my opinion, too. Y’all always enjoy the metaphors, and that one was one of my favorites in this song.

The way Taylor creates songs is so unique and impressive. She kind of layers themes and symbols over each other until they come together in the climax of a song to give you a full picture, just like a painter washes a canvas with different colours to give the finished picture more depth and complexity. It’s so impressive, and Clean is one of her songs that demonstrates this most clearly imo. Just a masterpiece! And without hesitation, WITHOUT ANY HESITATION, I said "Clean" She said, "what about" I said, "nope, Clean" She said, "not even..." I said NO!! I want to hear clean!" And when I heard/watched it on the Livestream during The Eras Tour in the acoustic session, it was SO good, but I can't wait to hear it with full production. There's just something so pure about this song. And also, for these 2 guys, to realize Taylor is all about her lyrics and she is a Master at story telling.
