It’s funny because I just shared this song on Facebook asking my friends what song brings them joy. This one has a lot of great memories for me, my brother was a musician and loved the kinks, and every time I’d go to his gigs I’d beg him to play this... ( but he’d rather play low budget lol) For the record he’s not gone, he just ..... changed. No more gigs. I haven’t seen him in around 3 years😭

Sad back story. This song was inspired by Ray Davies, the lead singer and writer, elder sister who love dancing. She actually gave him his first guitar, but she tragically died very young - before Ray and the Kinks became famous.

Song of nostalgia: taking us back into The Big Band Era when THE thing to do was to have a date to go dancing at the local pally (UK it was called a dance palace = 'pally'). Love and enjoy this song, the lyrics, and the nostalgic meanings and memories. The Kinks are from the UK - a band that was part of the original 'British Invasion" in very early 60's, their first hit was in '64 and their last charted single was in 1984. Yes, they have been around that long. Other top 40 Hits: You really got me/All day and all of the night - both '64; Tired of waiting - '65; Sunny Afternoon - '66; Lola - '70; Come Dancing - '83. Enjoyed your reaction. and yes, they don't make music like this any more.

In some way, today, every Kinks song is about nostalgia. My parents were Londoners, and I guess this is their chief appeal. Ray Davies is probably one of the great sardonic songwriters in the UK. Long may he last...

The back story for this also marks this song as special. Courtesy of Wikipedia. The song was inspired by Davies' memories of his older sister, Rene, who died of a heart attack while dancing at a dance hall. The lyrics, sung from the perspective of an "East End barrow boy," are about the boy's sister going on dates at a local Palais dance hall.[2]

The Kinks are so underrated, except by people who really know rock & pop music from the '60s to today. Best of the British Invasion bands IMO, and their musical influence with musicians, even youngsters of today, is well established. This is the song where Ray Davies proved Clive Davis (legendary head of the Kinks' record label Arista) wrong. Ray wanted to release "Come Dancing" as a single from their latest album "State of Confusion" (1982). Davis declined, saying it was a frivolous little ditty with no hit potential. Ray stuck to his guns, the single was released, and "Come Dancing" became the Kinks' biggest hit since "Lola" 12 years prior.

There is something timeless about the Kinks compositions and this is a perfect example. Whilst Ray Davies was the lead vocalist his brother Dave was no slouch. Check out 'Death of a Clown' it's been rereleased several times so should count. Even if not it was written in the Gen X era so that should qualify it.

Oh, my! I'd forgotten about this one! That's not like me with the 80's, especially one of the better efforts. This is a delight, if a little bit lightweight. As The Kinks were around during the 60's, they've maintained the vibe of that era yet managed to make it sound appropriate for the 80's. There's some talent at work with this one. Really neat stuff.
