I read part of Dana Thomas’s book about 3/4 and the part that stuck out to me regarding Arnault is how he acquired some of these brands and how he aimed to monopolize the industry. It wasn’t done with integrity and ethics and because he is a business man and not a fashion person his priority is his bottom line. I notice LVMH brands always have a logo and lean logo heavy in design, even if they never had a logo prior to because he wants to draw that next generation of luxury buyers. However the push to increase revenue has caused a decline in quality and an increase in prices and he doesn’t seem to care that his business practices has changed what luxury was. Luxury has almost become like fast fashion just so he can be the richest man.

He can do all of that because ultimately there are still millions of willing and repeat consumers buying into his brands without guns being held to their heads. Consumers need to raise their standardS!

I don't really understand where you and he differ. You both believe products with high price tags should offer something exceptional. You understand the appeal of brand recognition more than he does, but you'd be the last one to buy a piece of crookedly sewn canvas for 4000£ just because it says LV on it. Wouldn't you?

I'm also very confused for the same reason. This video is posed as a rebuttal, but it doesn't say anything significantly different than what Fashion Roadman stated.

1. I struggled with the blanket statement including all luxury group brands when they are not all bad. 2 Then suggest suitable alternatives… back up your argument with facts and data. 3. Dana Thomas threw me off it made me question which fashion / luxury space is he observing because that’s not what’s currently going on. I’m surprised by your comment because it makes me question if you watched both videos in their entirety?

@@SoAnesu I watched yours and your excerpts of his. I dis hear you make some ammendments to what he said so I guess- yes I get it and perhaps the thumbnail should have been don't overgeneraralize not no they're not. But yes I guess I agree with you that if you are going to buy luxury go for real luxury and not for an ordinary product that is riding on its reputation and brand recognition

@@SoAnesuI watched both and 1. He specifically calls out the big brands like Prada, Gucci, and Balenciaga. He even specifies which products exactly from those brands he was talking about. He wasn’t really making a blanket statement. 2. He did suggest suitable alternatives. He even mentioned specific brands. He also mentioned that it’s worth going to smaller ateliers that are still small enough that products aren’t being mass manufactured. 3. I think you focused on the wrong thing re: the book. The quotes from the book specifically talks about how “luxury” has become a marketing tool for the conglomerates and less a reflection of quality. You mentioned that the quote is wrong because the dollar figure was out of date…but he specifically said the dollar figure IS outdated but the point was not, and you didn’t really refute that point. (In fact you pointing out the aspirational nature of luxury and the practice of using that aspiration to drive marketing kind of proves his thesis.)

@johnsantos7741 I think you can focus on what you like in a reaction video there isn’t a set protocol. Everything in the excepts was incorrect not just the figures please do your research.

Dear Anesu, Thank you for your video, it was nice seeing a crossover between two channels I watch the most. But respectfully, I must say that I was a little disappointed in your video as I feel there seemed to be very little planning in what the objective of this video was and it feels like you did not watch his video at all or enough to form a considered opinion. Having watched both yours and his video back to back, as well as his most recent rebuttal of your video. I, like another user posted, think you both largely agreed on the same things-you veering a little more into brand "stories" more than he generally does, but overall the same: Quality must be there, and a "story" will not save a product from quality woes, à la Chanel these days. I've watched all your videos over the last year and one thing that you make very clear is how important craftsmanship and materiality from the different houses are, suggesting carefully curated fashion houses like Delvaux over Hermes, Josef Duclos over Chanel, Moynat and so on. So again, I was confused at your decision to respond to this video, also in the way that you did (somewhat condescending)-implying in some places that your knowledge superseded Roadman's and Dana Thomas' work. Fashion Roadman is a fashion journalist and his content is geared to an audience like myself, young and interested in fashion history, but also being aware of Luxury brands using said fashion history to market and sell goods they no longer invest in (paying low wages to workers, introducing polyesters etc.). Luxury has of course always had to do with identity, this is true but said identity was also represented in material weight, colour accessibility, and laborious construction all which are absent from most high end stores who depend on an up and coming middle class with no idea of what a weighted Chanel jacket should feel like, for example. THAT is what they are capitalising on. The nobility and previous upper class got their heavy weights and that was luxury. But the rest of us coming up now are only sold a dream, a fragrance of luxury, if you will-so that they don't have to invest in local communities to sit and sew and cut patterns the way they used to. And that is what Fashion Roadman's main point was. Luxury has successfully been bought into as an idea rather than material fact and I thought you out of all people would not only understand that but champion his point, because as I said it's what I've perceived your channel to be. Finally, suggesting a book of only 16 years old is irrelevant whilst not having read it is in poor taste, and you are not a woman of poor taste by any stretch of the imagination so I hope you can rectify this error on your part. Our society, laws and local policies depend on books and decrees written sometimes over 200 years ago which is relevant today. That's like say Marx's work is irrelevant because it was written some 100 years ago. ETA I'm editing my comment to add, in case it wasn't clear that I am a huge lover of your channel-truly, I think you are really great at what you're doing here on KZitem, I don't want that to be misconstrued under my criticism. Have a great day.

Thank you for watching my content and taking the time to post, much appreciated. I’m a one woman band and struggle to spend lengthy periods of time responding to comments which I always appreciate greatly. My thoughts… There are many ways to skin a cat, how we interpret things is subjective. I was hoping for fuller arguments from a journalist. My intention wasn’t to be condescending I merely looked for supporting data, not mine, to what I was saying. Some arguments you win some you lose. I didn’t see the rebuttal it’s a shame he didn’t tag me. If there was even 1 excerpt he read out representative of today’s fashion status quo I would read the book but alas. I look forward to seeing you again in future videos.

Dear @@SoAnesu , Yes I completely understand- my comment was far too much of an essay but I didn't want to leave anything out, so thank you for reading and responding-I really appreciate it. I'm mostly a quiet watcher so I'm uncomfortable at myself for the above being my first comment, but I will make it a habit from now on to comment regularly on your videos, especially since my thoughts of you and your videos tend to be very positive.

👋🏾 another informative video. I wonder if you have any insight for Pierre Cardin & and their quality for handbags. I believe that upon conception it was a women's rtw brand. But now it feels disconnected as a brand. No real advertising, print or visually. I take your words to heart so I hope you can give me some insight into the brand. I'm looking for a crossbody/messenger bag. Thank you😊

Wonderful analysis, Anesu. I agree that we need to become more discerning in our choices. I am concerned about luxury items becoming much more disposable, just like fast fashion, rather than heirloom items and the impact on our environment.
