The issue with waiting until a series is complete is that some publishers cancel a series partway through if there aren't enough sales of previous books in the series.

Haha! I sent the “deckled edges are fine” comment. It’s funny how strong people feel against them! I didn’t love Lord of the Flies when I read it in high school, but it was definitely memorable. Yes, there are so many books being published and the quality of writing is disappointing. Also, if an author has a top seller, they then come out with books so fast that they are usually not good. But they sell, so does that make them a good book??!! (I would say sales does not equal a good book!) Great video!

I'm finding deckled edges to be pretty fairly split in the comments of this video! People either love them or hate them, I think. I agree that sales doesn't equal a good book! If a book has a good marketing strategy, lots of people will buy it, so it's a "best seller," but maybe people didn't even like it 😂 But I also don't think popularity is an indication of quality.

This was so entertaining!! I like how deckled edges look - it's a total vibe but I do sometimes get annoyed when they make it hard to flip pages lol. I'm suuuuper picky with romances. There are very few romance authors I like (e.g. Mimi Matthews) and generally prefer historical fiction with romance subplots. My favourite romances are often those in classics because there is so little focus on physical attraction which makes it feel a lot more deep and meaningful. Oh my gosh I used to be one of those "reads the last chapter" people!! I haven't done that in years but as a teen I did that with almost every book LOL! I think every single book should have a spice rating / content warnings. I've been really trying to cut back on buying brand new books UNLESS it's a favourite author or I really want to read the book and just haven't been able to find a good used copy. I have had a lot of luck with getting used books through AbeBooks / Amazon - good prices and in good shape.

Love hearing your thoughts! I agree with enjoying classic romances more! I feel like they typically have more depth, since they’re not usually based on physical attraction. Abe books is a great resource for used books! That’s where I usually buy mine too, since they compare prices against several different online booksellers.

Love this video! I personally love deckled edges for their aesthetic, but I feel like a lot of the people who don't like deckled edges turn their pages from the side, while people like me turn them from the top or bottom, so whether the pages are straight-edge or deckled doesn't make a difference. That's my best guess anyway. My favorite sarcastic cat in books (now that I think about it, I don't know if it's that he's sarcastic so much as he's very arrogant and full of himself) is Rowlf from The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher. He only talks to a couple of people (because only they understand his language), but he views cats as far superior to humans the way you would expect a cat to, and he's not subtle about it.

I think there are some old books that have a high mildew scent and that is what I don't love. I love the scent of aged paper 📜and ink✍ , but many old books have that piquant mold aroma that seems to linger in your nostrils even after you walk away 🤢 I have to agree about MOST (anything over 50%) of the fiction published today is weak. Milk-sop, as my Grampa would say. I don't think digital is evil, just like I don't think audio is evil... I do prefer to read a traditional, paper book. I have one PCB but I always go for a different version /binding if it is available. It's okay. Mr D has many friends. Loyal, steadfast, supportive, ardent and true. 🥰 I gave Ove 3 stars on Goodreads initially and then went back later and lowered it because of things that bothered me that were still bothering me a long time after reading. I 100% agree with the Hardy gripe. 😁 I think even when they aren't the most depressing, 9x out of 10, they feel hopeless. And my sense of justice hackles nearly always are bristling by the end (usually throughout). Also 100% agree with the content rating on Romance. I also think LGBTQ should have their own category/ sub-genre. I am so content to just buy books second hand and miss out on whatever the 'special content' is in the new editions. If I come across a 'special' edition of something I love in a charity/thrift shop and it's decently priced, I'll buy it, but I just don't care that much to own it all. I dog-ear my cookbooks. And sometimes a design book or garden book, but not my novels or nonfiction. Hahaha the way the one person feels about Victorian Classics is the way I feel about the Literary Fiction of today. How grungy, underbelly, dark can we make this story to rip the tears and fears to the forefront. AMEN to the negativity of the homefront!!! There is something almost fantastical these days if it's a loving home with openness and honesty and love - or being disciplined without the youngster seeking revenge/lashing out in anger... I get kids needing to try things for themselves, learn to make wise decisions, stand up for what they believe... I just wish parents were portrayed as the reason for seeing the correct path and not having to rebel against them in order to get there. Also, the DRAMA of either losing a parent or being an orphan! It is so overdone! Can we have whole, happy families and find some other way to draw out sympathy toward our characters?!?!?!

I love seeing all your thoughts! I knew you'd agree with the Hardy hot take. As soon as I read it, I thought of you haha. And I'm glad I'm not alone in my love of Dickens! I thought my sister, dad and I were some of the few modern readers who love him until I found booktube 😂 Hating his writing seems to be the more popular opinion in my personal life, but I'm glad that it's not as wide-spread as I once feared! Agree that modern literary fiction feels so dark! While Victorian literature tends to explore the dark and miserable living conditions, it's rare to find an author who doesn't insert hope and an "alls well that ends well." (Hardy being an exception haha) But modern literature tends to end in hopelessness. And yes! If it's not dysfunctional families, it's dead parents! That goes beyond middle grade into YA too. I did a try a chapter and more than half of the books were all girls who didn't fit societal conventions and were missing one or both parents. It felt so repetitive.

👏👏👏 To the deckled edges❤❤ I like classic romance. I used to like contemporary but i got over it. 😅 i don't mind a romance subplot in a book tho. I didn't read Lord of the Flies until i was an adult either and really liked it although, yes, it is harrowing. I would have liked it as a teen too. But the thing with love triangles is there are only a handful of romance tropes anyway so it's ALWAYS the same thing over and over. 😅 I also agree that MOST modern books suck. Lol. Rita Mae Brown books have sarcastic cats. Love those!❤ I love deckled edges because the page edges feel so soft and I love to feel them. I do not like romance books, but l love little romances in books. Like The moving Finger by Agatha Christie which has two little romances in it. Loved that. I do not want to read fantasy. I do love it in children’s books, but don’t want to get involved in long series of fantasy books. I just don’t want to take the time when there is so much more to read. I do not want to read new books. I basically don’t trust them because you can usually count on older books to be clean. Plus older books seem so much better written than modern ones!

I also don’t go for series often. They can get cancelled or remain unfinished and have a long time in between. Besides that… series frequently just seem like one super long book broken into multiple installments. The only series I like are when each book is episodic and can be read on its own.

Ebooks are amazing for space! And you can easily highlight and take notes to find things later, which is another aspect I love. I think your opinion that series should just be one long book is probably a fairly unpopular opinion! I do read the ending of books almost always (and nearly always the ending of movies also). I feel even more interested in reading the book if I know the ending because I want to know even more how it got to that ending. Also, sometimes, I have chosen books by reading the last paragraph or last pages or last chapter. Then, I went back to start the book from its beginning. However, I don't like someone else telling me the ending. Then, it is a spoiler. It is only not a spoiler when I read it myself. I don't mind deckled edges. I'm indifferent I think unless they're stuck together and have to cut them off (it happened once). Romance books bore me to tears. Tess of the d'Urbevilles is a very favorite books, and I want to read more of Thomas Hardy. I like Dickens, but I need to read more books by him. I love Oliver Twist, but the The Tale of Two Cities is my favorite. That ending! Someone said "most contemporary books suck." Sadly, it's true for me too. I find in many of them the writing to be subpar, repetitive, and underwhelming. There are not many gems anymore. I loved this video 😊

I think the old book smell depends on the condition of the book. If the book has been well cared for and just smells old, that's okay. But if the book smells at all like mold, or mildew, or smoke, or grease, then "no" that is not okay. I can't say that I necessarily like the smell of old books, though.
