RIVER: Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, I mean, you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the Singing Towers. What a night that was. The Towers sang, and you cried. You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the library. You even gave me your screwdriver. That should have been a clue. DOCTOR: Time can be rewritten. RIVER: Not those times. Not one line. Don't you dare. It's okay. It's okay. It's not over for you. You'll see me again. You've got all of that to come. You and me, time and space. You watch us run. DOCTOR: River, you know my name. You whispered my name in my ear. There's only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name. There's only one time I could. RIVER: Hush, now. Spoilers.

"I think I'm going to need a bigger flow chart" This is by far my favorite special. From the comic beats to the bonkers story. To the chemistry between Alex and Peter which is INCREDIBLE. The "bigger on the inside", "He only has THESE 12 faces" and "awkward " are particularly favorites. The "Hello sweetie " and "that's Darillium" are DEVESTATING when you realize what's happening. A fun detail is the theme for the library plays when he scans her with her sonic. If Paula goes back to the library now after seeing this, I wonder how wrecked she'd be.

Here we are at last. Alex and Peter create an absolutly stunning portrayal of River and The Doctor as a stately couple. Their ability to play off each other as the plot tention is twisted from one contortion to the next makes this episode a tresure in and of its self. A Bigger Flow Chart The last episode that we saw River was Name of the Doctor. At that time all the contents of the completed diary were known to both. Minisodes First Night/Last Night gave the signal that 11 and River were on there way to the Singing Towers. This giving the charactors their final good bye at a time of equality of knowlege. The flow chart of their time lines were looped and crossing but at the bottom of the bow the ends of the two ribons are parallel and end evenly. With the inclusion of The Husbands of River Song we get a new shape. A shape that is beautiful with its own poetry and balance. A true sense of weight is added to the first intimate words The Doctor ever hears from River, "Your eyes... Their so young". The repeting stanza of River slapping The Doctor back into reality. The other side of the coin where 12 knows its River and river is oblivious. The grouping that hits me the most begins with Rivers promise at the time of her sacrifice in the library, she says "You've got all of that to come. You and me... time and space... You, just watch us run!". Then the confession of her love at the Wedding of River Song. "I can't let you die. Without you knowing knowing you are loved. By so many and so much... And by no one more than me." with Alex's voice cracking at the level of passion even the stone face of The Doctor is touched. And finally in Husbands we get a restatement of devotion from the couple. The Doctor says "River, Not one person on this spaceship not one living thing is worth you!" and River replies "Or You!". And finally we have The Doctors poem "When the wind stands fair and night is perfect. When you least expect it... But always when you need it the most... There is a Song."

When River and the Doctor are lying in the snow, and she is annnoyed that he is laughing -- he says "I haven't laughed in a long time", it is a reference to the previous two episodes, I think. In Heaven Sent he spends the entire episode inside his confession dial, and in Hell Bent he forgets who Clara is.. So the ability to laugh is a welcome relief for him "We are being threatened by a head in a bag!'

"A Christmas Carol" always has been, and always will be, the best Christmas special in my eyes, but "The Husbands of River Song" can very confidently stand as the runner up in that regard. A fun little screwball comedy that neatly and effectively turns into a tender and heartfelt love story, acting not just as a nice little coda for series 9, but also a fantastic conclusion to the story of River Song. The first half of this episode is largely inconsequential fluff, but it is undeniably loads of fun. The whole vibe of an Indiana Jones style adventure by way of campy pantomime made for an abundance of frankly hilarious setpieces, with the Doctor's over-the-top "reaction" to the TARDIS being a major highlight ("sorry, always wanted to see that done properly"). The performances of the cast are fantastic across the board, with Alex Kingston finding the right balance between her more mature and world-weary turn in "Silence in the Library" and her more bawdy characterisation from the Smith era, and brings River to life with just the right level of larger-than-life scenery chewing gusto. Her dynamic with Capaldi is great, with the pair establishing a great rapport which also allows him to properly flex his comedic muscles for the first time since he first stepped into the role. The guest cast, led by stand-up comedian Greg Davies, are similarly entertaining, playing their roles with just the right level of hammy energy, and thus allow for a memorable roster of highly enjoyable secondary villains. Moffat meanwhile turns out a highly witty and energetic script that's just fizzing with weird visuals, memorable lines of dialogue, and highly creative setpieces, which director Douglas MacKinnon brings to life with a wonderfully warm and festive style. However, it's during the second half that this episode really finds its footing and transforms into something truly special. The sequence where River pours her heart out about how she feels about the Doctor and their relationship was such a beautifully powerful moment, further helped by the look of hurt and shame on the Doctor's face as he realises how much he means to her. All of which of course leads to the best usage of "Hello Sweetie" in the entire history of the show, and seriously, who would've thought those words could be so emotional to hear? All of which is just the appetiser for the actual big event, the Doctor and River's last night on Darillium. The visuals used to create the two towers, combined with the breathtakingly beautiful score (Murray Gold does go all in with that overly-jaunty score once again, but he really brings it home for the finale), set the stage beautifully for the emotionally powerful scenes to follow. Capaldi and Kingston's performances are magnificent, as Capaldi nails the bittersweet resignation of knowing that this will be the last time he and River interact, while Kingston brings River's realisation, desperation, and ultimate relief to life with great effect. But what makes this most impactful is the fact that, even though he can no longer remember her, it's clear that what happened with Clara has indeed made the Doctor a better person. He's come to terms with the fact that everything has to end eventually, and he has to let the people he loves go in the end. After it's been stressed time and time again that the Doctor doesn't like endings, at long last he's going to stop running from them, he's going to say goodbye properly to the woman he loves, and he's going to savour every moment of their last night together. It's a perfect, beautiful way to conclude the overarching story that Moffat has been telling over series 9, and offers a nice little conclusion to River's story (obviously I'd love to see her again, but if this is the last we see of her, I'll be very happy with that). Equal parts funny and heartfelt, and a pitch perfect conclusion to a story that has been 7 years in the making, "The Husbands of River Song" is a wonderfully underrated little gem. The way it ties into River's first appearance is absolutely fantastic (on that note, a rewatch of that series 4 two-parter is very much in order now), and the script provides an abundance of highly enjoyable sequences along the way. "The Husbands of River Song" was originally intended to be Moffat's last episode as showrunner, and while this episode would've been the perfect ending to his long and often uneven tenure, I am super glad that he stuck around for another series, and I'm definitely looking forward to diving into those reactions in the new year. But until then, have a very merry Christmas everyone!

Nice not to be the only one blubbering at the end of this episode. lol I'd love to watch your star trek reactions but sadly you don't have them from the start here.

@@firefly24601 Yeah thanks I know that. There's no way I can afford to patreon all the good youtubers out there. If I could, this channel would definitely be on the list.

What hurts me the most is that River, being that badass, and self confident, thinks she isn´t a match for the Doctor. Remember in The Time of the Angels, when Amy asks River if they´re married, and River says somenthing like "He´s the Doctor, do you think he can be anything that simple?" (And Amy answering "YEP")... Now, one more special, and then we´ll pay the Bill...

Thankfully, River still had a few more adventures left after Derilium - including some with the Tenth Doctor!

Hey! It's always great to see your happy, smiling...oh wait. Joking aside, this is a really beautiful episode and your timing with releasing it on KZitem is on point.

It kills me, EVERYTIME, to hear River say The Doctor doesn’t love her and even more so that she’s scanned and it’s confirmed that SHE genuinely thinks she’s not loved by the most important person in her life. 🥺🥺🥺🥺

Such a wonderful reaction !! But really, the way he looks at her ... Well, she's the woman he loves with both of his hearts. That's why she's his wife and no one else. That's why she knows his name. It's just fantastic to see the chemistry between Kingston and Tennant, Smith and Capaldi (such a good Doctor ! ). All of them are the Doctor. And all of them fall in love with River (or are married with her, because it's obvious that 12th Doctor loves his wife during all his run)

And I will never know why she thinks she doesn´t deserve to be loved by him...

Are there any plans to watch the Doctor Who spinoff "Class"? It's set between this episode and the next.
