Geoff tried to refuse the riffing, as he according to himself, didn't know how to riff. Layne didn't accept that, so Geoff had to learn how to do the riff 😄 I feel like Geoff has gotten more comfortable with at least subtle riffing lately, he's using it more and more in his solo work 🙂

@@davidkreacts What's knocking me out about it right now is the incredible physical beauty of the video. I've heard it so many times, and while listening to you, I think I "looked" more than I have before - this is like a series of renaissance paintings! The muted colors, the light streaming in the windows (but still soft) and the classic triangle position the singers form on the "canvas." It's just gorgeous. As if Layne's glorious arrangement wasn't enough, Eli designed it to look like a painting. Eli's visual sense/chops is simply stunning!

When I first heard this cover by Voiceplay, I was simply blown away. This is, in my opinion, one of the best covers Voiceplay has done. Beautifully blended voices and great riffing. They wisely chose Chris Stapleton's version of the song, as it is more of a challenge to cover. I can see from some of the comments that Geoff wanted to avoid riffing, because he thought he didn't know how to do it, but Layne didn't accept that. I'm trying to imagine Geoff polishing his riffs and I can't help but laugh! Layne gave him a good hard time😁 So, Geoff is impressive bass who can crochet riffs & runs very well 🎶🎶🎶

I wasn't familiar with the song but did hear the Chris Stapleton version for some reason before seeing the VoicePlay version, which was the first thing of theirs I ever saw, and was blown away., being a lifelong lover of harmonies. I grew up singing harmonies with my sister, later with my daughter, so it really appealed to me. I've loved them ever since. And Geoff of course. For quite some time I had to have my daily shot of Tennessee Whisky. :) Eli is known as a master of riffs and runs. And this is why. And Geoff's bass guitar work always stuns me. I can see this had the same affect on you as it did on me.. And yes Stapletone did this riff. Geoff has complained in the past that Layne likes to push him to do more than he thinks he can do. Like this riff, for instance, as Geoff doesn't riff easily. From what I know of the members of VP they all have the kind of partnerships you talk about, full of love. And yes, I do envy them. :)

"David.exe has stopped functioning..." 🤣🤣🤣 Eli: I can riff. J.: I can riff. Geoff: I can riff ... from down here. This is not the Paul-as-camera-man video I thought you planned, but it's just as good. Layne does indeed have a habit of challenging Geoff, like a game of double-dare-you as someone else suggested. Geoff didn't plan to riff. Bass singers don't riff, right? Layne told him to start practicing his riffs. There is an adorable clip Geoff shared of him practicing this song as Kathy drove them somewhere and little William in the back seat is singing with Dad. Paul is usually their sound guy, not their camera man, but he filled in again for them in Bridge Over Troubled Waters. It's a beautiful arrangement by Geoff, we get to hear Layne sing, including a solo line, and Kathy ended up with an unusual role/task to make filming it possible. I hope it's on your list.

Had I gone further, I probably would have guessed this one because I’ve seen it recommended so often! I really need to start paying more attention to all the crew in the credits. I’m starting to remember the names of the camera men now, at least 😊. My guess was “Dream On”, see if you’ll get to that one too eventually. It’s one of few full length songs that isn’t solely arranged by a VoicePlay member. Geoff arranged it together with Rob Dietz, who also arranged “We’re Good” (which also has Koleko as assistant) and “Good for you”, as well as a lot of their minis (including “World’s Greatest Violin”, which I know you’ve heard!😊). Rek Dunn, who did the art work for this Tennessee Whiskey, is the guy they dedicate Halo to. Chris Stapleton is kind of like our generation's George Jones in both song content and style, with his own flavour of course. And in Voice Play fashion, they've added their own flair on a cover of a cover. One thing I love about the production and visual of the video, is it's almost symmetrical. Eli and Layne are both in ties and cardigans (Layne's tie and cardigan are loose and open to make it a bit different); J.None and Earl are in ties and vests with shorter shirt sleeves (J.None in a short-sleeved dress shirt and sweater vest, Earl in a dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, and waistcoat to make them different); and then Geoff is in the middle with the open jacket, and open collar. It's just... very aesthetically pleasing, and balanced, just as the vocal arrangement is balanced. Another VP over that gives me chills. Can't wait for the next react.

By the way, if you get some VoicePlay abstinence because you’re putting off listening until reactions, there is a treat on Patreon that you can’t share publicly anyway (because it’s never been made public): Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose”. The post is called “NIBTFYPBTAAAAD2019” posted November 19, 2019 but the recording is older than that. There’s no video, only mp3, and it’s featuring Emoni Wilkins (whom you also heard in Wicked). It’s beautiful!

You might also enjoy the version by Straight No Chaser. The Bluebird is the prime hangout for songwriters in Nashville, I'm told, and is actually quite exclusive - you can't just walk in and look for a collaborator.

Ooh - interesting. I didn't know they'd done it, but I will check it out some time. That's very cool. My knowledge around Nashville is very limited, though I know what an extraordinarily important hub it is for music. Thanks for the info.

Ok, I know I'm in the minority here but this is one of the very, very few things VoicePlay have done that I don't care for! Love the relaxed setting of them just hanging out in a bar, great vocals and the riffing in harmony was wonderful, it's just not my type of song. I still found your enthused breakdown of everything interesting to hear tho', thank you! 🙂👍

Personally, I think it's because the way the song is written, it limits any real chance for flexibility.

Fair enough - not everything is for everyone. I'm glad that you can still take things from it, even if it's not for you, and I'm happy that you enjoyed my analysis. :-)

It does create some of its own restrictions. I think they did a great job breaking away from that, but with some music it's just hard to do while remaining at least partially faithful (which might be why Stapleton's version is so different from David Allen Coe's).

You have to waqtch the Chris Stapleton Live version. These guys did the song justice, but they're not Chris.
