There are a million things you could say about this song. It has everything. The lyrics are the last word in true, tragic feelings. But the thing that blows me away most is that when I hear it, I hear BACH. I believe that, wherever he is, Bach hears this and is weeping. Glad to say that I’m old enough to say this is our music, and we’re so happy it’s being shared with new generations. Thank you.

Tom Scholz, being a perfectionist, was taking a long time to record "Third Stage." There was a flood in the studio that added to the length of the project. The record company (Epic) got tired of waiting and sued for breach of contract. 3 of the band members got tired of waiting too and quit. Sholtz jumped to a different record label (MCA) but Epic sued MCA to keep the album from being released. Epic also withheld Sholtz's $ from the first two albums which also caused recording delays.

Tom had already planned to take time to really work on the third album, and had told the rest of the band that if they wanted to do other things while he worked on #3, feel free to, and they did: Barry did a solo album - albeit with Brad and Sib - and that’s where the problems started. CBS made it sound like Barry was “the sound of Boston”, which ticked Tom off big time. (Not the Orion The Hunter album, the Barry Goudreau album.)

The long gap between the albums "Don't Look Back" & "Third Stage" mainly was due to Tom Scholz's perfectionist nature. Since the debut album was such a monster, the record company (Epic) executives wanted the band to record another album as soon as the band finished it's concert tour promoting the "Boston" album. Scholz got to work writing songs, but he also insisted on doing all the engineering & mixing himself, using his own recording equipment, just as he had done on the first album. As you can imagine that was a lot for one person to tackle within the short timeframe set by Epic. They grew increasingly impatient, putting more and more pressure on him to finish production. He finally gave in, sending them what he felt like was an incomplete album; he needed more time to tweak the production on several tracks. He was determined to never let that happen again, so he sued Epic to be released from the recording contract. This resulted in years of legal battles. After the lawsuits were finally settled he broke his hand, rendering him unable to play guitar or keyboards for months. The other members of the band, except for Brad Delp, moved on, not interested in working with Scholz again. So, he had to form a whole new band to record "Third Stage".

A Man I’ll Never Be is one of those songs that just keeps growing on you. I’ve been listening to this song since I was a kid in the late 70s and I never get tired of listening to it. The Don’t Look Back album, I think is every bit as good as the first Boston album and I’m glad you’re doing a track by track reaction and can hear the greatness. A lot of people blew this album off initially back in the day but, over the years many have come to realize what a gem it really is. As for the gap between the second and third album, the stories are legendary about what happened and unfortunately by the time Third Stage was released in 1986, Boston was mostly forgotten except by those of us who really took notice in the 70s. By ‘86 the music landscape had changed dramatically and Hard Rock, Metal, and Rap were the preferences. Also, Tom Scholz’s perfectionist tendencies and litigiousness really worked against them. The third album has some really good songs, Amanda was a huge hit for them, and We’re Ready is another good one on there but, the rest is a bit of a let down. In my opinion the first two albums are must listen to and then a few songs on the third. Didn’t bother keeping up with them after that but, I did buy the third album whe it was released. Still only listen to the ones I mentioned.

The reason it took so long to produce 3rd Stage is because the band wanted to record it themselves. The record label said no and sued. 6 years in court and the band won the right. The master tapes were in storage and the reel tapes actually stuck together. So the band had to manually lube them to get the recordings. There were sounds on there that even the band couldn't duplicate, but what a monumental work

I left a comment on a few Scorpions "Still Loving You" reaction videos saying that song was the greatest power ballad of all time. But "greatest" and "Best" are 2 different things. "Greatest" meaning the best one that reached a larger audience. A song everyone is familiar with. "Best" means literally the best one, period. "A Man I'll Never Be" is best. Every song on AT LEAST the first 2 Boston albums is the best of the best, because these albums are beyond perfection. People knock the third stage album because it doesn't sound exactly like the first 2 albums. But it's still the 3rd best album of all time. I would put "Walk on" a reasonably distant 4th place, but still better than 99.99% of albums ever made. The first 2 albums I would have to say is a tie for #1

This is my favorite of all time Boston song but everything from their first two albums was perfection... not a bad track in the bunch. Sadly, after this album there were legal issues, label changes, creative differences, time frame disputes over delivery of subsequent albums, Delp left for a while and the magic somehow was lost. Then in '07 the World lost arguably the best male vocalist ever when Delp committed suicide. Sib Hashian (drummer) died unexpectedly in '17 but Tom Scholtz (many instruments and genius behind the band), Barry Goudreau (guitar), and Fran Sheehan (bass) are still with us.

Your question about the delay between albums... Someone else had an answer however the issue was that Tom Scholz is such a perfectionist that it took him forever to get the sound the way he wanted it for these recordings. Most of what you hear in the instrumentation was completed by Tom in his own studio. This did cause the record company to put a lot of pressure on him, they don't make any money without a record. The positive to Scholz being the perfectionist he is is that we got great sounding songs on these albums.

The gap between albums is complicated. Once the DLB tur ended Epic immediately wanted a follow up album. Tom wanted to take some time to recharge and also updated his studio (HIdeaway Studios). As Tom began working on the next album, Epic records demanded the masters. In Tom's eyes he was only done with half the album and refused. Remember Tom has always stated that DLB was an unfished record. Epic sued Tom for breach of contract and froze the band's royalties. In contrast, Tom counersued Epic Records. And a court case ensued. Meanwhule Tom taold other band members that they were free to pursue other prijects whie in litagation. As a result Barry Goudreau released a solo album with Sib Hashian and Brad Delp on Epic Records. The record company promoted the his album as if Barry was the man behind Boston's success. This angered Tom immensely. Barry was subsquently let go as was Sib Hashian. Once the ligigation was resolved, Tom was eventually cleared. The band was released from the record contract, royalties were released and the band signed with MCA records. The Third stage was released. The biggest difference was that Barry, Fran, and, Sib were all replaced with Gary Pihl and Jim Masdea. Fran ad Sib did play some on the record but did not stay. After Barry's debut album, he formed Orion The Hunter. The song (So You) Ran was a popular staple on MTv and FM radio.

The Band imploded after this album. Lawsuits abound. I very sad. Tom Scholtz spent 10 years working pretty much independently on Third Stage. I like ot, but I think the "likability" of each subsequent album was the result. Schultz managed to maintain the lead singer post of Brad Delp for years until Brad's horrific and unexpected suicide. Even though Scholtz is the brainchild of Boston, his almost psychotic litigious antics played nearly every role in destroying Boston...

This song was THE song for me when i was finishing my last year of high school way back in 1981. Boston was one of the bands I was into at the time but this song really resonated with me. I had decided months earlier to leave home and go on active duty in the armed forces. This song hit home for me because it described my situation. Growing up in the shadow of older siblings, if I stayed home then I felt I would never grow, always being known as the baby brother. So, leaving as hard as it was, was the best way to fix my situation. Adding to the melancholy was seeing the effect this decision had on my mother. Catching her crying right before I left crushed me, as I was the last child in the home. But I used this song as inspiration to become what I wanted, and I did indeed achieve my dream. Fast forward to Brad Delps incredibly sad death. Learning that he suffered as he did all those years, and the emotion in this song really hit home with me.

This song was a cry for help. Bradley Delp was deeply in love with a woman that fame kept him away from. He hated it! He could not destroy BOSTON by quitting and could not bear being away from her. It got to the point of madness for him and she moved on and he killed himself because he lost the true love of his life due to the unexpected fame this band created. They toured to the point of madness! For brad, the fame and money was nothing compared to losing her. He fell into a deep depression and it cost him his life. So anyone who wants fame I say this, You had better be ready to leave your loves behind if you want the big time. There is no disaster like success if you are not ready for it.
@donedwards5150

Look up the actual reason for him taking his own life. It had nothing to do with fame or music. It was due to a life where struggles with lifelong depression finally enveloped him and increasing pressures within the band and then one foolish personal mistake that became the final straw for him. The ugly details are out there, but this not the place for discussing his personal flaws, but to treasure his legacy.
