the slang "function" has 3 contexts in Brazil: the first and easiest to understand is that a "role" guy is a hoodlum, a hustler, an OG. the second (which is not mentioned in this song, but it is common to hear in other raps here) is "to do a function" which can be: dealing, stealing, doing something to earn money, that is, hustlin'. the third I can't explain very well, but apparently, in the late 70's until the mid 80's, there was a time that people in São Paulo called "function". "At the time of the Function", is mentioned by Mano Brown in other songs. I believe it was a generation of people who frequented the same place, probably this time is the beginning of hip hop in Brazil, because other rappers from other neighborhoods who probably didn't even know mano brown at that time also cite this term "function period " "Root" on 1st verse is like a OG thing too. A old School Guy living the old ways like 80s n 90s. On second verse is a ancestor thing. is like..."Roots" by Alex Haley. Brazil have muslim comunitties but nothing like 5%. Maybe all muslims here are arabians. i read about the 5% some years ago. I see people like Rza, ODB, Rakim, Nas, Spike Lee using tshirts and collars with that logo and I was curious about it, I wanted to know what it was. I read and understood a little of what Clarence x13 wanted to show. but not. there's nothing like the 5% here Much love & respect. Dope channel!

"Root" in this context means something along the likes of og, old school, like, respecting the vision of a better hood, better favela, not striving self-growth only. "Function" would be the work for this vision to happen, like spread the word that crime is not worth it and such, in a way that kids would believe it. I could be wrong tho

Bro, nice video. You got the song right, it's only because it is translateded to english, Mano Brown is such a good lyricist that his bars you gotta think do understand, lots of references and analogys, all that stuff. And Dexter was locked up for a while, but he was the only inmate to go out to do shows with his group 509-E , and come back do prision. Root, it's used here to do reference to the OGs, the originals, from back in the day, the true ones

13:25 - In Brazil, sometimes we use ROOT as a slang. It means something or someone which is very loyal to his origins. Something or someone which is very original, not corrupted. Hi! The part of the song that talks about the arrival of James Brown, Al Green, notice that a little while earlier he was saying that he felt low in self-esteem, and then black music resulted in a renewal of self-esteem. That's why the old school here demands that the RAP is a commitment, and that even echoes in the younger generation, but most of them don't do it from the heart. "Power to the Black People and the Pounding of the Drums", makes reference to the empowerment that black music brought. The drum is a classical percussion instrument in Africa and very popular in Brazil (you can notice it in samba, as well as religious cults of African origin that are popular in Brazil). The excerpt "The black ones dance, everyone the same without making mistakes Thanking heaven for the rain that falls" refers to the dance steps of the disco era that were very common in the ghettos here in Brazil, and the rain is an analogy that refers to the benefits that black music brought after a long period of time difficult, just as a people thank the skies for rain after a long period of dry weather. "Function" is generic slang that depends on the context but in this case I believe it refers to RAP's noble job of bringing information. In other contexts it can mean any job (whether legal or illegal, you know?), a run, or even a party, as you said. "Roots" means old school, commitment to information through culture. RAP as a social service. There's a very strong strand of that in the US too. I believe it has the same meaning. You can bridge the cultural difference between our countries and understand most of the lyrics. Congratulations!

No, it's not. He is painting a picture of a poor kid in the slum, growing up and having to face the world and all its difficulties. But he was not a victim. Even without the means, he was there preparing himself (push ups, doing barbell curls with the gas bujão - don't know how to translate bujão de gás. But in Brasil is the source of the gas to cook food in the kitchen, go ahead and put bujão de gás on Google and go to images). He was growing up with his internal demons, depression, almost like a bomb ready to explode. Then he was presented to the funk, to the pride of being black... The rest is history.

Raiz (root) here in Brazil has several meanings: Original - One that comes from the origin and/or keeps the origins alive in them. Original culture - That which is from the original culture and/or keeps the original culture alive. One who remains faithful to his place of birth - Even if he wins in life or moves away, he will always remember and respect the place where he came from and his cultural origins. So when he says "I am root brother", he is saying that he keeps/is/remembers/respects what is original and the place where he was born. There's other means, but those are the most used ones or main ones.

I am very happy to see people from other countries listening to our Brazilian music, because I also listen to American rappers like Eminem, Royce, Joyner Lucas, K.A.A.N, Token and others. Music is something universal and RAP is beyond music it's culture. Now speaking from a more educational side, your English and the way you speak (which is calm and paused, it helps a lot the listener's hearing to adjust to the syllables and sounds) is helping me a lot to understand English itself, both standard English, formal language, and also its slang or informal languages. I am a Brazilian Portuguese teacher, so I am both enjoying watching your reactions and also learning and improving my English. A valuable combination, "mano". ["Mano" (bro) is a slang/short word for "Irmão" (brother)]

I recommend for you H. AÇO - DMN (MAN .STEEL - DMN) some data to you about some doubts you had: "on the sole of the foot my heart beats" - is a slang that is used in our culture in the samba, it refers to when the man is tough or roguish and controls his feelings Root - the meaning of root is to be original and true, to follow something like a rule without changing since it was created until today. an example I can say that black power hair is something root FUNCTION is a position of responsibility. a function is a strong action that generates a representation , a function can be a job or a position of representation in some work or even in crime , it is a slang for that
