I've always thought this song was about being careful what you wish for. "Everything I Own", "Aubrey", "The Guitar Man", "If" and several others were all big hits in the early 70's for Bread. An album cut of note is "Our Lady Of Sorrow". Written and sung by the band's other singer, James Griffin. It's a haunting story of a woman fighting addiction.

That's whst love is. See. It worked out. He can now live with joy knowing that he took the high road, and being the high road, his view is clear and far and heartbreak is just a memory.

Im afraid many people today don't understand the sentimentality of yesterday's songs. Bread's music was heartfelt and poetic. Combined with David Gates' soft voice they created some Kleenex grabbing so ngs. Aubrey makes me cry everytime I hear it

Even though she didn't love him, he was so sweet to still wish her/them all the sweet things they could find. I wish we could all have this attitude instead of being angry and trying to be mean in some way. Very heartfelt.

I was in Jr High when this song came out. It hit me like a ton of bricks when she found the love she waited for - not me. Broke my heart. Alwas tried to do what the closing said "I will wish for her his wife, all the sweet things they will find."

Kind of a PUNCH TO THE GUT, huh? Their entire Album is filled with songs that are gut-punching. I highly recommend that anyone who loves these reactions...to go buy the 1973 CD called THE BEST OF BREAD that has this song on it and other equally beautiful songs. I was going thru my first and only breakup when I heard this album. It helped me sort out my feelings.

This is a very spiritual song. Apart from the fact he is snooping into her diary. I always found it weird that she didn't care that he read it. That's the heartbreaking part I think. He was so insignificant to her, she didn't even care he read her diary. But the spiritual, almost Buddhist, part is his complete acceptance at the end and kindness and compassion he shows to the couple. After some initial tears though.

So yeah, at the second verse it grabs your upper intestinal track, twists it into a sheep-knot, sears it with a hot iron, pulls it into two pieces by 2 Llamas in a tug of war, and finally bleeds you out over hot coals. Other than that, a pretty mellow song peoples.

I totally saw your reaction coming. But I listened to this song a lot in high school after a breakup. For some reason I found this comforting. David Gates was a great writer and had a great voice. I believe he gave up performing a long time ago. He wrote several other love songs that will leave you in a much better mood than this one did.

I didn't see it coming either, Erin. That's why you don't read someone else's diary, and take a big risk if you do, as the singer found out. Still a beautiful song, nonetheless. Thanks for your reaction.
