PLEASE READ! This is an old recording. I recorded this back when it first came out, but due to copyright issues, I was unable to post this until now due to the included footage in the reaction. I've since appealed, but it never went anywhere so I'm left with having to put text over the video in order for me to upload this. Thanks for understanding! This is actually my first experience to Saltatio!

The instrument is a hurdy gurdy, also called a Drehleier in German. You should also check Loki by them. It is a great song about the god Loki and it is one of the best songs they have made, with sadly no reactions on it. If you like norse mythology, then you will love it. However the song is in german. On the singer, Alea, he does practice kung fu, so while I don't know about axes, he knows how to fight ^^

The other language they were singing was 13th century Icelandic, which was the language it was first recorded in, in Egil's Saga. Though, according to said Saga, the poem actually originated from the tenth century during the Norse conquest of Ireland, so it would have originally been scribed in (likely) Old Norse or Old English. 🙂🤘

Loved your reaction to this song, and I'm sorry to hear about the copyright issues. (Thought it was a bit strange you hadn't watched this already, as I know I've seen your other reactions to this band and some of their collaborations with others.) Guess you know already, but for those of you who doesn't: Saltatio Mortis is a German band, and most of their songs are in German, but for this one they decided to learn some Icelandic to give some real Viking feel to it. (The English parts are probably there to remind us of the version sung in the Vikings TV series.) Just like you said, the singer of this band - Alea/Jörg Roth -, is not be messed with. He's a professional martial artist, and aside from showing his form on stage and in their music videos, he's also done some badass cosplays, such as Kakashi from Naruto and a Jedi master from Star wars.

Very late to this.... No idea if anyone ever answered this, but the instrument at 4:20 is a hurdy gurdy (Fun) Fact: 1. The singer "Alea" is actually a skilled tai chi instructor. 2. The Band's name "Saltatio Mortis" means "dance of death" 3. Parts of the song are sung in old norse tongue.

The norse thing they sing is from Egil Skallagrímssons saga if you want to read about that. He lived in Iceland and was a war poet, sorcerer, berserker and farmer. Also just a side note about old singing in norse culture, it was more of a throat singing and is spoken about from ibn Fadlan and some jewish guy that went to a trade town in denmark (todays germany), there is probebly more writen about it

Hi Dave - I think it was already mentioned, but the instrument you were wondering about is a Hurdy Gurdy, which traces back to medieval times. You may want to check out an artist by the name of Gingertail, who plays a lot of different medieval instruments including the Hurdy Gurdy - and she also sings. She does a cover of this song as well. Maybe take a listen. I enjoyed your reaction to this.

my take on the story in the video is that the two main characters here are neighbours that got into a fight, and now they're having this ritual duel to first blood to settle their disagreement in a civilized manner rather than just bashing each other's heads in (also it's kinda funny to hear you describe the singer like that, because i actually met the guy irl, and i've heard him talk in a bunch of the band's vlogs, and he's just the sweetest and gentlest soul, but i guess the way they made him up in the video does make him look very fierce)

It is call holmgang (Holmgång if you are Swedish) It was a way of setteling distbutes or if you had been wronged in someway by another person. The name holmgang (literally "holm-going") may derive from the combatants' dueling on a small island, or holm, as they do in the saga of Egill Skallagrímsson. At least in theory, anyone offended could challenge the other party to holmgang regardless of their differences in social status. This could be a matter of honor, ownership or property, demand of restitution or debt, legal disagreement or intention to help a wife or relative or avenge a friend. Holmgangs were fought 3-7 days after the challenge. If the person challenged did not turn up for the holmgang, the other man was considered just in his challenge. If the offended party did not turn up for the holmgang, they were deemed niðingr, and could have been sentenced to outlawry. In effect, if someone was unwilling or unable to defend their claim, they had no honor. Sometimes a capable warrior could volunteer to fight in the place of a clearly outclassed friend.

The other comments do a good job about explaining the instruments and the band and what not, but (and I didn't scroll down very far) I haven't seen anyone mention the actual rituals depicted here. You made a comment about them rubbing the paint on the chests and the bonfire and what not- this is my favorite Saltatio Mortis song, and while everything about it is amazing, the accuracy to which they depict the old pagan culture within this video is spot on. I've been pagan (Wiccan) since a real real young age, and I really appreciate that culture represented in this. It's the small things that caught my eye - the waving of the besoms to fan the fire, the little inconspicuous symbols laying around, the stones... It's a masterpiece

That's Germanic Energy!! 💪 The language is old norse. I find it so cool that a German Band sings this song. Because the ancestors of the Vikings are the Germanic people. So Norse mythology is actually Germanic Mythology but they just call it Norse mythology because the Germanic people also lived in the north? In a way.. It's kinda the same thing

Today I showed this same exact music video to my husband and he just sat there, no reaction, no facial expression whatsoever and afterwards he said: "Ok. It's not a band of my taste." And I was like "What!? Did we even listen to the same song!? I mean, the shere power..." So yeah, basically I'm here now to cure my disappointment and it really helped, seeing you enjoying this song so much. So thanks ^^ And yeah, you should totally give their song "Loki" a listen! :D

It definately is practised still today. Odinism/paganism all that stuff is still practised. Treat any type of this spirituality with respect and caution. And he was playing a Hurdy gurdy. Old string musical thing you would put resin on the strings and crank it and use the buttons for the tones. Really cool i have one myself. I prefer to try and use used strings personally. And i am not an Odinist or believe in Norse mythologies but it fascinates me.
