I am a die-hard metal fan, grew up in the '70s-'80s, appreciate many forms of music. The Weeknd is a brilliant performer with a great tone. He blends retro with current like a boss. One right after another, simple, catchy tunes sure to be instant hits. He's a prime example that if you don't stay locked up in your little musical bubble the possibilities are endless and you can bring so much to your particular genre. The difference between one-hit wonders and those who can lay down a whole album of good stuff every time.

so true about everything you said but the reason most artist don’t broaden their bubbles is because either they’re comfortable where their at or because labels don’t like artist taking chances cuz the album sales mess with their money

It may in fact help with protecting him, however I believe (and many Weeknd fanatics) that it relates to his latest music video "Too Late" which highlights a storyline of Hollywood/LA. The video was released just before this performance and he often likes to portray a storyline with each album and it's set of music videos, with Too Late being the latest. I encourage giving it a watch if you have time :) - but be warned, it is a bit extreme and viewer discretion is definitely advised!

I heard this song the first time on the radio yesterday I did not know the name so I just used my cell phone recorder and said the title when I got home I thought my recorder did not save it and I could not remember the name I love this Artist this track just makes you want to tear up and think about things around you, you made a comment about his voice I do not comapre him to the Late Michael Jackson but he also had a soft but strong voice and could really put meaning in his music I think that is why so many people Loved him his songs had meaning. I have watched several reaction videos to this song and can say yours was the Best, I think when people do these reaction videos they should be more serious some are more comedic and cruel Thanks enjoyed your video

So allegedly, the girl without the mask is supposed to be Selena Gomez. Other than that, this video says so much. No just about her, not just about the Grammys. Not even just about Hollywood in general. It’s a self inflicted desire to appease to everyone else for acceptance. His face was wrapped up entirely during this VMA performance. The outcome is what we see in this video. Next, the only person in the video with no mask, is a woman. She (allegedly), is supposed to represent Selena Gomez. This goes back to his “My Dear Melancholy” EP where he referenced her in the song “Call Out My Name” with the quote; “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life” He was willing to help her live. But in turn, the gun is in her hands, cuffed by his. It’s almost as if he’s begging her to do this. He wanted her to live, but the pain of the aftermath obviously still haunts him to the point he wants to die. She should be the one to do it, since he’s been hurt the most by her. In the song “I Was Never There” a quote “You’d rather something toxic, so I poison myself again, again. Til I feel nothing” So willing to make it work, you damage yourself to just be accepted. To be noticed. This is what YOU wanted, this is what I need to have YOU notice me. Keep me around. Even if I hurt myself in the process. This comes full circle, not only to her but everyone and everything. He made himself new, created something that “Hollywood” would accept. In such a dire need to feel acceptable, he made himself into one of them. Despite it all, he still doesn’t get acknowledged. The Grammy board didn’t nominate him for anything. Selena moved on very quickly, and didn’t seem to care. So even with wanting getting plastic surgery, broadcasting it to the world on the center stage. Jazzing up his suit jacket, trying to stand out, he still isn’t accepted. YOU did this. I did all this for YOU. For the media. I did this for YOU,Selena. I did this for YOU, Grammy board. I did this for YOU, Hollywood. But yet, I still am not acknowledged, still I am not accepted. Even when doing what I could do to fit in. The fakes and phonies behind the masks that he puts on a show for are all expressionless. Anything he does...just simply. Isn’t. Enough. So what’s next for a man in denial? For a man who needs to be acknowledged. By past lovers, media and the world stage. This is what YOU, have made me become. I’ve tried to fit in. I’ve tried to stand out. I’ve tried to go by your standards of beauty. All for nothing. His artistry is all he had. But he’s brought to the point of realizing it’ll never be enough to satisfy the ones he desperately wants acceptance and acknowledgement from. YOU made me this way, now you can watch how it ends. Notice how he goes up to a stage. Set up to look like a a place a funeral would take place. Where one would speak about the person who died. Enter the gun. But it’s a gag. Doesn’t matter if he gets nominated. Doesn’t matter if the pain of a past love continues to haunt him. Jokes on you. Save Your Tears For Another Day. Because I’m not going yet. I’m only. Getting. Started

What you said about the pyrotechnics is interesting bc it seems like it could have inspired the bandages on his face. Its almost like he didn’t wanna have the MJ-Pepsi commercial situation happen to him and his hair, and that happened to be a solution that matched his music video universe.

Good theory but, it's actually from his music video "Too Late". He often has storylines to each album and Too Late was the latest video he released before performing at the AMA's. His bandages reference that video and are a continuation of the story. Worth a watch if you have time, however it is quite an aggressive video (fair warning).

I’ve told u before and I’ll say it again I don’t think u can really really appreciate him until u have started from the beginning of his career. When u hear his bachelor life to being in a relationship to hurting that girl that was the love of his life brings u to now. This past year, this album, and all these performances all tie into his heartbreak of losing her by his own fault. I’m a woman and knowing how he broke her heart cause it was pretty public I’m still moved by how much pain he is in without her. All those bandages r representation of the wounds he’s inflicted on himself. It’s brilliant!
