A new Netflix movie brought here here. Hope is the thing with feathers. So glad you read it. I don’t know why I didn’t know about Dickinson before but her style is similar to mine, and what I want to strive for. Metaphors about birds, flowers, trees..

Actors trained in Shakespeare production are good readers of poetry. Folio books of England has new Emily Dickson edition. Great job on video.

Your reading style suits Dickinson well. Dramatic styles are of a certain period, and no reading is right or wrong, just a choice of the time and person. I recommend listening to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner read by Richard Burton if you like dramatic.

There may be a "method" of reading certain poems, this however is not always the case; as David Foster Wallace used to speak of his writing, that it was better left read in the mind rather than spoken. Even listening to Charles Bukowsky read his work, of which hours of him reading are on KZitem, I'm unsure that he would be too critical, other than just to mess with the one reading, of how one would read his poems. 😊

Hello. Thank you for the great video. May I know if you also read the versions with Dickinson's original dashes? If you prefer the edited poems as those you show in this video, why?
@marianhreads
4 жыл бұрын
Candy, thank you for pointing that out!! I didn't realize the punctuation was so different till I just compared them to the originals I found online. I think now I've only ever read edited versions 😟, but I'll check my sister's "Selected Poems and Letters" book which was the first Dickinson I read. In general, I'd prefer original punctuation since that was what the author intended...especially in poetry, where formatting and punctuation play a huge part. 🙂

@@marianhreads You're welcome. Dickinson's dashes were a distinct part of her style and have befuddled critics for centuries. Like the scholars, I don't understand why she punctuated her poems that way, but I think it adds another layer to her poetry and makes reading her work more interesting. Hope you enjoy reading the original versions, too!

Hi Deborah, this wasn't meant to be a full bio of Emily, just a very brief intro with a focus on the reading. There is indeed much more that can be said about her struggles with love and faith, which I alluded to at 1:20.
