I used to do that as apart of OCD. If you enjoy doing it and you're just really appreciating the story, then it's probably fine. But if you feel like you need to do it, even when you don't want to (it might feel like an itch you just need to scratch or something you have no control over whatsoever), you might want to keep an eye on that or really try to force yourself to stop

@@isabelflint3632 yeah same for ASD with me too. I have too do it because I get bad palpitations and I get highly anxious that I have missed some of the words. Sometimes I have to flick back a couple of pages. It's horrible! And I don't know how to stop it, doesn't help that I find recall hard, so processing the story can be difficult. Dog-earring your own books is fine, but as a public library employee, I think there is a special place in hell for those of you who dog-ear library books. Please remember that library materials DO NOT BELONG TO YOU -- they are public property to be shared by all and should be treated respectfully. I've seen too many books have to be sent to mending or weeded out of the collection (and often, never replaced due to budget issues or being out-of-print) because of torn or damaged pages that disrupt another patron's reading experience. You're potentially denying access to someone who might have need of that item. On top of that, undoing all of your dog-ears ends up costing us valuable time that could be spent on other more vital tasks. It's not hard to find a post-it or scrap of paper. But if you absolutely must mark your place in this way, buy your own copy. And please, no food items as bookmarks -- empty snack wrappers and uncooked pasta noodles don't belong in library books. 🤦

When I lived in countryside Japan, my trains were brutal (lots of sitting around for cars to be connected/disconnected, transfers, blahblah) so if I wanted to go literally anywhere (like I didn't even have a grocery store in my village...I had to leave a lot) I had to endure 30 minutes MINIMUM on the train. I'm actually grateful for that because I got so bored of just scrolling on my phone that I rediscovered my childhood love of books. It got me back into reading and now I read anywhere and everywhere. I'm back in good ol' British Columbia now so I listen to audiobooks whenever I drive (or in the shower, or cooking, etc) and drag a physical book with me everywhere but all my Canadian friends are like ".....since when do you read so much??". It just took extreme train boredom to get me there. I now read constantly, have a tin of bookmarks, watch a lot of Booktube, etc, etc. THANKS awful countryside trains!! :D Also thanks to Ariel for getting me into annotating my books. I still only do it with my non-fiction reads, but it makes it easy for me to go dig up interesting facts or quotes I want to share with people and it really does feel like they are specifically my version of that book.

I've used so much crap as bookmarks... receipts, gum wrappers, actual bookmarks, my phone, dogeared pages, sometimes I just remember the page number, random scraps of paper, a pen, a check, mail... probably some other stuff I can't remember.

I usually don’t read with music on - surely it distorts the experience to some degree - yet I distinctly remember two occasions when I did. I read Michael Frayn’s novel ‘Headlong’ alongside BRNS’s album ‘Wounded’, and Susannah Nix’s novel ‘Intermediate Thermodynamics’ alongside Aquilo’s album ‘ii’. I didn’t pair either for any particular reason other than that I liked the artist at the time. Listening to those albums now immediately reminds me of specific scenes from the books (like one of those memory techniques where chewing gum whilst studying, and again in the exam, will make you remember things easier), but I also feel like the memory has remained sharper in general as if it was saved twice in my mind? (*neuroscience knowledge, anyone?*) It’s a bit of an odd experience and nothing I’d want to do all the time, but somewhat fun, too 😅Lovely video as always 💕

Nikki's Novel Nook Do let me know how you get on! 🤗 ii is very atmospheric, softly folksy and full of yearning; Wounded is darker and somewhat farcical (I am terrible at describing music, sorry!) I don‘t really listen to them anymore, but they have a special place in my heart.

not sure if I'm impressed or disturbed by this chaotic energy ^^' my take on some of the questions: I can only read 2 books max at the same time or I start to get anxious. sometimes it's 3 but only when I desperately wanna read a book and then start and finish the third book before I pick up the other 2 again. On tv while reading: It depends on the book, if it's a light read I watch shows or movies while reading. I sometimes even have the kindle app on one half of my laptop screen and a streaming site on the other half and then watch and read parallel on my laptop

HAHAHA. Reading ahead to see what the dialogue says because you’re stressed, then going back to read it calmly. Is 1000% me😂😂😂

I’m the same way about reading multiple books at one time 😆 it also depends on how quickly I’m making my way through the book (s)

I love the breaking the spine because it makes it look used and loved and appreciated. Also I used bookmarks as bookmarks because I have heaps of the free book depository ones that sit in a class on my shelf.

My reading habits: I never have a specific place for reading at home. I read wherever I want but just like you I mostly read in my bed or in our sofa. I know it is bad but I love reading while I sit comfortably. I use bookmarks but I also just sometimes just fold the corner of a page. Oh, sometimes I also just close the book and remember what page I stopped reading on. Bookmarks are really just collectibles for me. I have like a folder where I put the bookmarks that I collect. I use them but not all the time. I have a nightmare about bookmarks where a friend of mine ripped my bookmark. It was an awful feeling. I also just stop reading when I feel tired. I finish chapters if I can but mostly I stop if I feel tired. I would never eat if I am reading. I would drink but I would make sure that while I am drinking my book is down. I could never eat during reading since I want to focus on reading or eating rather than doing both at the same time. I can play music in the background but I would like it to be instrumental. Actually just a random instrumental music so I don't really know the lyrics or melody. I can't read a book with noise unless I am a place where noise is really there but I would love to read in a quiet or not noisy place. I read multiple books especially if it is an e-book however if it is a physical book I mostly focus on one book but I also sometimes just read multiple books at a time 'coz why not. I could read anywhere. However, I would prefer a library or work place I guess if it is possible. I go everywhere so I always read. I read silently in my head most of time time unless I am being distracted by other noises or I am just being distracted and I need my full attention to the book so I read aloud sometimes but as long as I get my full attention back I would be a silent reader. That only happens if I am distracted. I always read ahead. I don't know why. It just satisfies me. I am also that person who loves spoilers 'coz I don't want to be anxious just like you about what happens next. After the few chapters I actually just go ahead and read the epilogue or last chapter even though it doesn't makes sense since that would make sense if I continue reading from the part that I am in the book. I also read everything in the book. I am fine with breaking the spine because it makes me feel that is a symbol of actually reading and finishing a book. I also write in my books. I mark things. However, I haven't use highlighters in a book yet 'coz I don't have good colors for highlighters. I don't want my book to have some color that doesn't fit to the atmosphere of my book. Oh lastly, I don't read my book where there is like a body of water... maybe like near a pool, ocean, sea, river, lake and etc. I feel like my books aren't safe near water so if I am a place where there is like those type of water... I make sure that I am reading in a distance. I had experienced of making my books wet. Something spilled in my bag so that happened. I love covering my books with plastic covers if I can but that is like for paperback books. I don't really cover my hardcover books.

During my first read I am super careful - no dogears, flags only, and the spine is perfect. If I love it, I'll do whatever I want after that but so many of mine are donated or traded, so it is essential to keep it as perfect as possible.

I would love to see a video about how you annotate! Also, similarly to you I read many books (and fan fiction) at once and don’t use proper bookmarks unless they were attached to a bought book or if I for some reason have one laying around. Mostly it’s receipts, my rubber bands, phone sometimes, or I just remember where I was. Like, it’s truly whatever lol

Once I used the TV remote for a bookmark and a couple of hours later, I had to flip over the whole house just to find it.
