I also loved Check & Mate and it was such a surprise because I didn’t really enjoy Ali Hazelwood’s other books. It was a solid 4 and I added 0.5 because I actually played chess for years and just love to see female representations here (loved the Queen’s Gambit as well of course). Happy to see you also give it a 4.5!

I find your thoughts on The Winners really interesting ! I must admit, Backman is my absolute favorite contemporary author and I do tend to love anything he writes regardless of the pacing, so a 700 hundred pages novel about whatever happening in Beartown was everything I hoped for. The first book is wonderful, complete and cohesive, that’s for sure. However, if some plot points were not so interesting for me in book 2 ans 3, I felt like they gave us a more complete scenery. Like, hockey is at the core of the city, so hockey IS politics, school, people. And the latter books hit me so hard because the solidarity, the stories, ends up forming such a large ensemble. I had the time of my life seeing those characters evolving and some, including Amat and the Anderssons, were handled so well with their journeys that I can’t blame Backman for rambling about politics and gangs for a bit too long. But I do agree that they heavily rely on the emotional impact and character portrayals that happened in book one ! I would still say that the longer it felt, the more I imagined how dreadful it was for those inhabitants.

The Beartown trilogy is my all time favourite )): The Winners utterly destroyed me and I sobbed for 700 pages, I still think about it everyday. Benji is the best character ever!!! (I honestly didn’t notice any comma splice in the 3rd book and I read the books one after the other ahah)
@scipulchre

I had had Beartown for a year, maybe couple of years before I started watching your channel and your Nov. reading wrap up made me actually pick it up and read it (I’m a hardcore sci fi girlie I haven’t picked up a non sff book in an *extremely* long time but dear god when I say it was the best book I read in 2023…. You get it.) I inhaled Beartown and Us Against You like not a break to be found, but did take a break while traveling before reading the Winners because Fredrik Backman had me in such a state of peril. The comma splices were extremely noticeable for sure to the point it was almost taking me out of the book and was pretty much my only criticism of the book apart from sometimes it seemed like the author was just repeating his lovely sentiments over and over where in1&2 something might have been poignantly stated in a sentence but took a half page to be stated in Winners… really did feel like the editor was like “hey man. People loved 1&2. Just go ham. You do whatever it’s fine.” A lot of the book could have been parsed down and I’m not sure if it would have been better? Or worse? If that had been the case. Anyway I was very excited to hear you were doing a vlog of the Winners and very very much looking forward to seeing your reactions to specific parts. :) the state of absolute peril I was in from things that were hinted at in beartown and us against you. You get it. Fredrik Backman you’ve taken years off my life.

loved this loosely strung together thematic ✨experience✨ and honestly it taking two months to happen feels very ❄️seasonal❄️ bc who is getting Anything Done during the winter (not me, I am but a seasonally affected smudge of a person). I love that you loved check & mate because so I I!!!! There is ABSOLUTELY a VERY REAL and irrational possibility that Nolan is my favorite of Ali's MMC's and that's crazy because I really was all in for Jack from Love Theoretically before the beginning of this month. The book was so fucking fun and it is EXACTLY what we needed in the wintertime. I am currently actively reading A Study in Drowning because of your winter TBR video and I'm really enjoying it. Will be back whenever I finish it to watch that video section bc I know there aren't any spoilers but I'm one of the sickos who will glom onto even the vaguest spoiler so I must abstain. Finally I *almost* bought that exact New Yorker puzzle from the bookstore so I'm glad I got to live vicariously through you for 10 seconds. saved this video as my little treat for the end of the day 🫡 thank you for sharing and motivating me to pick up one of the 5 books I'm reading rn.

I'd love it if you read/summarized the All For The Game trilogy! I haven't read Beartown, but they sound vaguely similar (and by that I mean they both have sports and trauma). Idk what's in these books, probably crack, but they're so good, yet objectively cringe in a fanfic kind of way? I didn't know original works could capture that very specific energy, but it somehow makes it work. I love it unironically though, and that's what really matters😌. The series is crazy entertaining and crazy short (I read all books in about 2 days) so I highly recommend it!

the downfall of Check and Mate for me is that I actually play chess and it was frustrating that there's no actual chess playing in the book. I was waiting for it to happen, my brain needs the AHA! moment where I understand how good GOOD Nolan is, how exceptional Mallory is but it's just implied. And sometimes people comment on it.. vaguely and then the ending?? you don't actually have a moment where they play each other aslkdjasldjalksjdklajsd NO! anyways those cloud earrings are amazing!

If you liked "A Study in Drowning" you might really like "The Wood Wife" by Terri Windling. Similar premise.. famous dead poet bequeaths his home to a female writer who moves in, and while hunting the house for his lost manuscript, encounters a world of fairy tales, desert magic, and dangerous tricksters. The book is a few years old now, but it won quite a few awards when it was released.

the comma thing for The Winners sounds really strange 🤔I think it has to be something that the editor wanted because there's no chance it's bleed-through from the original. Like, Swedish doesn't do commas 😅 (of course you can put some if it helps making a sentence more understandable but if you compare it to e.g. German there's almost no commas at all) I am totally with you that excessive elective commas are annoying. I know it's probably sacrilegious but I hate the Oxford comma.
