You did a really good job with The Natural Way of Things which is, as you say, brutal and sometimes difficult to read. I read and reread some of the interviews in her the Writer’s Room where she is in conversation with various Australian authors including Christos Tsiolkas, Malcolm Knox, the wonderful Joan London and others. I much preferred The Trees to James and was a bit disappointed that it didn’t win the Booker. Was it only last year. I have read Fugitive Pieces but so long ago can’t remember it at all except that I enjoyed it. That was a good thing to do Bob. Finding new titles by various authors and possible new favourites is part of the reading journey.

For me, Held is the most accomplished of the shortlisted books. I will be neither surprised nor disappointed if it wins.

I love Percival Everett. I have I Am Not Sidney Poitier on my TBR cart. The name joke sounds like all of the play on "nothing" in Dr. No.

I just started Held and I think “floaty” is a great way to describe it. It’s unconventional and powerful (in as far as I’ve read!). This is a great way to experience beyond the Booker list.

When I finished James I thought it was the best on the list (although didn’t like the twist), then read Stone Yard devotional and thought that was the best, but then The Safe Keep eclipsed those two. Now finishing Held, which feels head and shoulders above all of them. Such a beautiful and thought provoking reading experience but, like you, I can’t recall much about it. Be interesting to see if a re-read brings thing together or whether it remains elusive. Feels like a book you could keep returning to and get more and more from - a true masterpiece

A great idea. I loved The Trees by Everett and Assumption was good on audiobook. It's a toss up between James and The Trees as my favourite of his so far. I good quite a bit out of The Mars Room but Creation Lake just lost me had to DNF, seemed like too much posturing to me. I loved Held and Fugitive Pieces. Maybe because I read Fugitive Pieces years ago, Held, held me inthralled. Of Charlotte Wood's I've only read The Weekend and Stoneyard Devotional, which I loved. I still need to read The Natural Way of Things (when I am in the mood for something brutal) and some of her others. I've read some of her non-fiction, literary criticisms. I've read There, There but not this year's one on the Booker. It was very good. Richard Powers - I loved Bewilderment and The Overstory, can't wait to get to Playground. I really enjoyed Enlightenment but I really need to get to her others.

I hope Charlotte Wood wins . I read The Weekend after enjoying Stone Yard Devotional and thought centering a dementing elderly dog at the heart of the story was genius . Read Fugative Pieces years ago and enjoyed Held but just a bit too intense / knowing for me .

I don’t think there is any other novel by Yael van der Wouden, Bob, also not in Dutch. The Safekeep is her debut novel. There is only a sort of short story collaboration publication by her and two other Dutch writers. And scattered short stories in literary magazines. I’m reading the Safekeep at the moment and loving it!

The Booker was my first notice about the Trees. I went on to purchase four more books. I've now read Erasure, So much blue, Telephone and James. Trees and telephone are my favorites so far. James I was really looking forward to and intrigued by the premise but it is not a favorite. 😟 It's the only shortlisted book I've read so I need to get busy!

I think you should start a podcast, in the style of Poured Over, in which you talked to the long- and the short-listed authors.

Have you seen the film made of Erasure by Percival Everett? The title evades my brain but the film was great.

I've heard such praise for The Natural Way of Things since the Booker Prize shortlist came out, I'm seriously doubting myself. For me the book swung between boring--I mean how many ways some women go berserk can one take? And, irritation by the absurdity of the amplification. It reminds me of The Handmaid's Tale in terms of paranoid fantasy. Another book that lost me.
