I'm always enthuis'ed to hear of another McCammon fan! Swan Song is probably still my #1 with Boy's Life as a close second. Glad you enjoyed Speaks the Nightbird -- and to comment on book two, as well as the rest of the series, no two books are alike. So whenever you do decide to continue with Queen of Bedlam (and I hope you do!), yes it'll still be the same historical time frame, but a whole new setting and atmosphere. And book two is actually when the series officially starts. Speaks the Nightbird will seem like a prequel or origin story in hindsight. But anyways, sounds like you had a great month! I read Steinbeck's East of Eden earlier in July, and just finished reading Hobb's Ship of Magic on Sunday. SoM was fantastic, and can't wait to continue with Liveship Traders.

Thanks so much! Yeah McCammon is fantastic. You know, I sort of though of Speaks the Nightbird as an origin story for Corbett - that makes me pretty interested to continue. Hi, Theo., Happy to hear Boys' Life was a home run for you too. Only two books for me in July, a memoir by Diahnn Carroll (The Legs Are the Last to Go) and the horror novel Sundial by Catriona Ward. Both were good read for me. August has begun with promise for me, just finishing Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee, a fantasy with a YA feel to it. The last third of the book sharpens the narrative and finishes much improved from the so-so beginning pages. I closed the book happy to have read it.

Epic reading month!! I’m right with you on Song of Achilles being an incredibly immersive and affecting read, and I’m kinda jealous of your FatF reread. Can’t wait to try McCammon and Boy’s Life in particular now! It can be near impossible sometimes to determine why a book isn’t working for us, and it probably comes down to a big muddle of factors that are all working in concert against our engagement with a read-I’ve always been a bit wary of GGK and worried that I wouldn’t mesh with it, so maybe I’ll start somewhere else with him. Hopefully Lions will work better whenever you pick it up again!
