Congratulations Eric on completing your writing project 🎉! I read only 3 books in March and looks like April too won't be able to read much... But I'm glad to say all 3 books were nice 😊 1.The book thief 2.The pull of the stars 3.Being Reshma

Hi Eric, Claudia Pineiro's "Elena Knows" which I think you hauled a few weeks ago, is my favourite read so far of 2022. You must get to it! And thanks from bringing it to my attention.

Hi Marc! That's great to hear. I did read Pineiro's novel in Feb and loved it! lonesomereader.com/blog/2022/2/16/elena-knows-by-claudia-pineiro-translated-by-frances-riddle I completely agree, it's one of my favourites of the year so far too. It better make the Int Booker shortlist.

Thank you Eric! Paradais is next in line for me, just as soon as I finish Matrix. I've also been reading Our Women on the Ground, a collection of essays by Arab women journalists, reporting from their homelands throughout the middle east; thoughtful, brave, honest and very, very personal writing. I highly and wholeheartedly recommend it.

Thank you, Eric. I follow many of the book prize discussions and I have enjoyed your talks for about a year now. I've not read any of your March books, but I just finished "Salt Lick" by Lulu Allison which is long listed for the Women's Prize. I found it astounding, engaging, and brilliant. The writing is both lush and direct with an intriguing and relevant story line writ large on a world that's been torn apart both politically and environmentally. The Greek chorus of feral cows is nothing short of genius. It's one of the best books I've read in quite some time. Cold and raining here in western Massachusetts, but the daffodils are coming up.

Thanks for this thoughtful commentary on such a wide range of books. I bought and read The Snow Ball after you mentioned it in a haul and found it very thought-provoking. I had similarly mixed reactions to the Ozeki (and am having somewhat similar mixed reactions to the Women’s Prize longlist more broadly, although Rachel Elliott’s Flamingo was a happy surprise with some writing that felt like a bit of an homage to Ali Smith). Just started the new Anne Tyler, French Braid, which feels like settling in for a conversation with a dear friend. Very excited to read your books this fall. Congrats on finishing them!

I agree with the issues you describe in The Book of Form and Emptiness. The preachiness of some parts are not done perfectly so it kind of gets in the way of the greatness of the book. Overall still very enjoyable.

Great selection of books! And congrats on finishing writing yours! Just added The Colony and Happy Stories to my TBR. Glad you've discovered Allende (Alicia's right, it's more like Ah-YEN-dey). I've read a ton by her - when I started trying to read more in Spanish she was one I could count on to be fairly reliably decent. She's so prolific, though, I haven't come close to reading everything, and I do find there's some unevenness. I found her YA book awful, others I have found just okay. Where I think she shines is historical fiction that ties in Chile - my favorites are Portrait in Sepia, Daughter of Fortune, and Ines of My Soul - sounds like this one is in the same vein, so I'm bumping it up! I love Ruth Ozeki, and I loved The Book of Form and Emptiness. I guess I just went with all the devices and enjoyed the ride! I liked how much it let us in on what the mother was going through as well, even as Benny was annoyed and embarrassed by her all the time.
@EricKarlAnderson
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And I didn't even know Allende wrote YA as well. I am very curious about her most recent novel though. I did find that aspect of Ozeki's novel really moving - the desperation of the mother to care for her son and him getting so embarrassed by her.
@erinh7450

@@EricKarlAnderson Yeah, she wrote a whole YA trilogy! Stopped after the first - not sure if it was really that bad or just that I can't seem to appreciate YA at all anymore since my kids went through their teens and I read a lot of it again then - guess that was the last hurrah and I'm over it. LOL.

I used to read a lot of Allende's books when I was a teenager. I agree. She's a very skilled writer. Her first novel the house of the spirits is the one that stuck with me the most but I also like Paola and of love and shadows. I've always felt that Chile and Greece have much in common culturewise. Even our recent history is similar. Both Greece and Chile have experienced civil war and junta occupation. Maybe that's the reason I appreciate her writing.

Thanks for this Eric - Incredible that you’ve been able to write three books in what seems like a vey short period of time. Impressive!! What’s your secret? I’ve parked the Ruth Ozeki for now (having got two thirds of the way through) as I was finding it a laborious read. I wasn’t convinced by the unlikely cast of characters, the child narrator or the books offering their perspectives. I think if you like magical realism this is a great read! However, as you mentioned, it does feel like the author is often preaching through the story, which I find distracting and annoying
