There is a healthy debate in the wood working community about whether mitered joints need splines. I wanted to test out whether a basic mitered box could survive as long as a box-jointed box could. I put them to the test.
Do not take this as scientific, unquestionable proof that every box you make will perform the same. I simply wanted to add my thoughts to the debate. Wood workers have spent hundreds, even thousands of years trying out different methods, and in general we have rules of thumbs for a reason. This testing is more about impact, and not strength over time. Do not take this to mean that you can build massive dresser drawers with only miters... there is a long, well trodden path showing why dovetails are the preferred joint.
I simply set out to try and show that miter joints on boxes have a lot of strength on their own, and do not always need splines. Your milage will vary depending on how well you construct the joints.
