Randall 'Duke' Cunningham is a genuine war hero.
Born in Los Angeles in 1941, 'Duke' joined the US Navy in 1967 and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1968. That same year he began training on the legendary McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, at Naval Air Station (NAS) Miramar. Soon after he joined Fighter Squadron 96 for his first operational tour.
Following his first combat deployment in 1969-70, his second WestPac tour would see 'Duke' return to America as a fighter 'Ace'.
In total, 'Duke' Cunningham flew 300 combat missions and was awarded the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, 15 Air Medals and the Purple Heart! He was also later decorated by the South Vietnamese government.
This classic interview from 1987 sees 'Duke' talk about his experiences in the Vietnam War. He talks about being shot down over Hanoi, evading Surface-To-Air (SAM) missiles, his excitement after his first aerial 'kill'!
The video ends with 'Duke' talking about how he and his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), Lt 'Willie' Driscoll, shot down the legendary Vietnamese pilot, Colonial Tomb!
It is a breathtaking interview which graphically describes air combat back in the 1970s.
