Wearing glasses or having astigmatism can cause you to perceive "lens flares", or the lights bleeding out and appearing larger than they should (extremely noticeable when driving at night). In the dark your eyes also dilate more and let more light in, which helps enhance the effect.

Hmm, years back I created a fun physics demonstration involving lasers for students. I used lenses to de-focus a laser pointer's beam until it was wide enough to illuminate a whole penny. The resulting shadow was cast on a wall and demonstrates an interesting phenomena. Diffraction and constructive interference leads to the penny's shadow having a bright point right in the center. It's unexplainable under a ray traced model of light but perfectly understandable in the wave model. The point is that widening a laser beam is trivially easy with lenses; we just don't usually do it since we just did a bunch of work to concentrate the light and widening it is usually pointless unless we just want to create a cool visual effect. A system of two lenses would be able to widen the beam while preserving the parallel nature of laser light.

Having been in a laser lab a couple of times (though mostly just visiting), I can attest that there are real lasers that do show up such beam that can be seen with the naked eye (I think it was a 1w laser). The key difference is that there would be the equivalent of tiny lense glares (visually) from dust particles being incinerated when they passed into the beam. That said, those lasers were also somewhat larger than the one(s) shown, in the order of half a meter if I remember correctly.

That was a 1w blue laser. You shouldn't have taken your safety glasses off while it was on. Any laser above 500mw is a class 4 laser (yours being 1000mw was well into class 4). The light from class 4 lasers can be harmful to your eye even when they are being reflected off of a matte surface (e.g. walls, floors, appliances, etc.) can cause permanent eye damage. Since it was a blue laser it is especially dangerous because! To quote Wikipedia Blue-light Hazard is defined as the potential for a photochemical induced retinal injury resulting from radiation exposure at wavelengths primarily between 400 nm and 500 nm. The mechanisms for photochemical induced retinal injury are caused by the absorption of light by photoreceptors in the eye. Under normal conditions when light hits a photoreceptor, the cell bleaches and becomes useless until it has recovered through a metabolic process called the visual cycle. Absorption of blue light, however, has been shown to cause a reversal of the process where cells become unbleached and responsive again to light before it is ready. This greatly increases the potential for oxidative damage. By this mechanism, some biological tissues such as skin, the lens of the eye, and in particular the retina may show irreversible changes induced by prolonged exposure to moderate levels of UV radiation and short-wavelength light. Since blue lasers have a wavelength of 445nm or 450nm (the one you were using appeared to be 445nm whereas the one in the video you were talking about appears to be 450nm) they are right in the middle of the Blue-light hazard. Playing with high power handheld lasers is fun (I have several including a 6000mw 450nm (blue with a hint of purple) and a 5000mw 532nm (green) lasers in my collection) just be careful and always wear protective eyewear. Also, make sure your protective eyewear is for the specific wavelength of the beam you are using! Protective laser eyewear isn't expensive (you can get a pair for less than $20 on Amazon) and make sure the O.D. (Optical Density) for the wavelength of laser you are using is high enough to be safe with the power of laser you are using. Also for anyone wondering about what kind of protective eyewear +CaptainDisillusion should have been wearing. The required Optical Density for laser safety eyewear for a 1W 445nm laser is 3+ for accidental exposures of a quarter of a second. However, an O.D. of 4.4+ is required for longer exposures. Please be safe and don't go blind everyone.
@CaptainDisillusion
8 жыл бұрын
+xXxNoScopeMLGxXx Thank you, Prof. Laser Wisdom. You're absolutely right, I should not have removed my goggles (even though doing so for a brief moment while pointing the laser away from my face in a large room full of dark matte surfaces hardly qualifies as "prolonged exposure to moderate levels of UV radiation"). But we entertainers sometimes have to take extreme risks like this in order to make a funny face at the end of a shot. Also for anyone wondering, I was in fact wearing the correct protective eyewear. It was provided by the manufacturer specifically for use with this laser torch.
@xXxNoScopeMLGxXx
8 жыл бұрын
+CaptainDisillusion I'm glad you are being safe! I just don't want you to go blind is all. Also, there are a lot of people who buy very high powered lasers and don't even think to buy protective eyewear. Class 4 lasers are completely different than the "toy" lasers you can buy (which are usually class 2) and there are tons of people that don't understand that shining a class 4 laser at a glossy white wall can be bad without eye protection and that even if you get eye protection you need to make sure it's the right kind. I just wish people emphasized how dangerous high powered lasers can be more often.

In fact, that was an accident. They were a Handycam camcorders line called “Nigthvision” released by Sony in the early 2000s that used a night vision mode: a filter that clearly saw the light emitted by an infrared LED that is invisible to the human eye, a technology based on night vision tactical glasses used by military forces. This see-trough phenomenon occurred when using the cameras in said night mode when recording in daylight. That caused some controversy because could see through thin fabrics what most female garments are made of, implying even that its use were restricted in some countries and later ceased to be used since the night mode only gave a greenish or grayish image leaving its use relegated just to surveillance cameras while modern prosumer cameras use higher ISO or sensitivity factor to capture all colors in low lighting conditions. Maybe you can get used Sony "Nightvision” cameras on Ebay, but that technology is already obsolete.

@@lu_ck Obsolete because these old cameras only record on videotape and there is no way to adapt to digital. Obsolete in the sense that other methods are used to record video in the dark with a camcorder... As I said, it is no longer used in consumer video cameras, only in CCTV and video surveillance systems. Obsolete because it is not used massively, not because there is another method (which there is not for now) and no attempt was even made to transfer said technology to Smartphones.

His work is the best in the field - but it's very technical and doesn't appeal to a wide mass of people. So the bad thing is: He doesn't grow as insanely as something like Mr. Beast with his absolute shit content, but the good thing is: The vast majority of his viewers are the kind, which is very invested and truely a fan. In order to 'fix' the uneven axis of the laser you have to add cylindrical lenses after the collimater.

I have actually used that exact same toy phaser from the mid-90s as a prop with a real laser in it for a costume. 50mW green laser diode replaced the lightbulb, replaced the 2 AA batteries with a 9v and wired in resistors to adjust current to the soundboard and speaker. 100mW would have been brighter, but a 50mW diode is cheap on eBay. The wavelength of green makes the laser seem brighter to the eye. You could see the beam without smoke (the natural dust in the air) and even outside as long as it was night. Actually, you could see the beam just barely enough in a florescent-lit room. I know. I did it without a soldering iron in a homeless shelter in 2014. No fog. No tools. No money. No bullshit. And not on camera.

I've got a 5 mW green lazer that's not even close to as powerful as the one CD tests with in this video and in a reasonably dark room with no smoke/fog/etc, you can see the beam with the naked eye just fine. With fog or smoke, it's positively impressive.

inherently, there is a problem with the debunk. I have a 2.5 watt blue laser that has a beam that is COMPLETELY visible in day light. Sure, my laser is 150% more powerful than they one in question here, but, you can power even a 5,000mW laser with a couple of high drain 18650 batteries. the only way for sure to truly debunk this video is with the shape of the beam. UV and blue lasers aren't round. the beam of a UV laser is flat at the top of the diode. the beam of a blue laser is rectangular in shape. worth mentioning, the UV beam shown in the video is a 405nm laser. The beam used for the debunk is 445nm. A 1,000mW 405nm laser diode MUST be used to accurately debunk the video. The 405nm beam will appear much dimmer to the eye due to it being on the extreme side of the visible spectrum as will a red (650-690nm) laser. Also, UV lasers are much more intense in their power density then even a blue laser with only a couple dozen nanometer difference in wavelength.

Friend has a very powerful laser pointer. You can see the beam in dim lighting and really well in the dark. It's amazing to see when used outside shining it into the night sky. Reminds me of laser lights used shows.

I know the video is 11 years old, but check out some of the lasers that styropyro has made on his KZitem channel. The beams are so powerful they can EASILY be seen and set things on fire. The beam is EVEN WIDER than the one in this video. So whether or not this video is real, I do know that laser beams that wide and bright IS possible.

Is it just me, or is Captain's voice dubbed in and he's lip syncing? Something's amiss. Great video, though!
@alternate241

Without really good equipment, it's actually quite hard to capture someone's voice on the scene, even in a quiet and closed environment. He probably did record his voice separately from the video. That would explain why it sounds so clear.

This is for sure dubbed over or ADR as I call it. I work in film as a post sound engineer so I'm quite (annoyingly) picky about this sort of thing. Captain D is a total pro though, a lot of youtubers neglect sound but this guy knows what he's doing. ADR work is also sometimes difficult for actors to do. I've worked with good and bad. There was probably a problem on set and only discovered after filming. I don't at all blame him for not wanting to redo the whole shoot. Captain D if you are reading this, a little trick is to add a plate reverb combined with a room preset reverb. Often in homes a lot of the reverb is dictated by the duct work in the walls and ceiling and you may get a more realistic reverb this way Anyway, long time fan!

Oskar Skog Technically power could be correct, but seeing as power is measured in watts, it would be more descriptive and informative to say watts. The legal limit is defined in watts, so it makes sense and is a better word than power.
@tucker8676

There are some slight grammar issues which may make power seem more appropriate in this sentence, but it is obvious what they were getting at.
