I got a subhastadum because the backside of the leaves are red. It looks very much like your cordatum in leaf shape. Mine also arrived larger than I expected, but no where as big as yours, and less than half the price. You probably saved that plant from living in that little pot the rest of its life since few people knew what it was let alone wanted one. Good for you!

I had never even heard of P. cordatum until a friend in the hobby picked up a “Cordatum” at a big box store and showed it to me. I was confused because it looked EXACTLY like a hederaceum, but the information we found seemed to be a mixture of facts about the real cordatum mixed with misinformation. So we didn’t think the two species were the same. We were led to believe that Cordatums were larger than Hederaceums and that there were some other subtle differences. But that the cordatum was “rare,” and more toxic than an average Philodendron. Since my friend got hers, I started seeing them regularly in all kinds of stores, so either there’s been a surge in their popularity locally (we tend to be behind the curve), or I just never paid attention before because I thought I was seeing hederaceum. Also, I liked the etymological information! I love taxonomy and etymology, but I guess my brain had made the incorrect connection between “hederaceum” and “heart shaped,” because I was walking around thinking that hederaceum meant something about hearts. Ooops! I like knowing that it’s actually about it’s similarity to ivy.

I would really enjoy watching some videos of plant latin!! You could explain the etymology of houseplants we have in our homes... or just start by giving a latin name of a shape like the heart in this video and then give examples with pictures of houseplants that have that shape in the latin name... Don't underestimate how geeky us plant people are😌🤭

I love the explanation of the proper name. Please, geek out more! I had noticed the two different names but didn't realize there were two of them; I had thought that cordatum had just been superseded by the botanical naming authorities. Like sansevieria, and oh whatever, you know, snake plants 😘What was the name of the second philodendron you ordered?
@reallybigplant
Жыл бұрын
ok yay thanks for the encouragement, glad you like all the info! 😊💜and also confirming the name confusion is real lol😅 oops i must have accidentally deleted the name at the end- it’s a hybrid p goeldii (thaum. spruceanum) x speciosum hope you have a great week!✨

I did not know people call a philodendron hederaceum a cordatum, and I've never noticed you doing it. :') I do know that philodendron hederaceum is also called philodendron scandens, supposedly because it was discovered by two different botanists seperately and both botanists named it. I am not sure if that is true, or only rumour. People in the netherlands (and maybe everywhere) do confuse the hederaceum with epipremnums a lot, and I've always found it weird that English and American people call the epipremnum a pothos!
@reallybigplant
Жыл бұрын
yes I believe you are correct about the scandens 💜 I am also not sure about the origins of “pothos” either but that’s interesting to hear you say its an english/american thing, I should look into this✨ i’m happy to hear you never noticed my mistake haha thanks for watching have a great week!!😊💜💞🌿✨
