Although very interesting as the origins of any game with a racket or similar, it’s understandable why it didn’t become more popular as the lawn tennis did.

Well, it's a lot more complicated. Also, it's much harder to build a court, and there's not much room for spectators. It seems like it's probably more interesting than lawn tennis, though.

Nice one Anthony! Good to see you in action, still " beautifully stroking the ladies bottoms"! But have to disagree with your "market place " origins theory. It was invented by the monks of Nevers Abbey in the cloisters when a monk , late for vespers throw a ball of cloth on to the sloping roof with his palm-Jeu de Paume-palm. This is the origin according to Lord Aberdare's 2001 masterly Real Tennis book. It was a game for the nobility originally not "le peuple" in the market, who may have mimicked their superiors by setting up a market version.......

Which Henry IV was around in 1601? Seems dubious...

BitOfFunJones Henri IV of France, who was previously the protestant King of Navarre. Converted to Catholicism, quipping that "Paris is worth a Mass." Ruled 1589-1610. Beloved by the French ever after as Good King Henry.

@@weemissile It was a quote from another player from another age. Anthony believes in the empowerment of women and has coached many great lady players.

@@ronaldjones5591 In all seriousness, I don't give fuck. Unless someone makes it clear that they really do hate or want to abuse women, there's no reason to get triggered by silly comments.
