I think that's underplaying it a little. People failing to stub out cigarettes and leaving them to smoulder like that have caused HUGE fires. The issue, at least for me, is in not handling it yourself. It's tiny. Step on it and make sure it's out. You do not need to call a professional. This is like calling a carpenter when all you really needed to do was tighten a screw on your doorknob.
@Antifrost
24 күн бұрын
@@jenniferhanses You're right, cigarettes can turn into a serious problem if left unchecked. My joke was aimed at the idea that the fire department needed to be involved rather than it not having the potential to burn out of control. If the person who called had the foresight to know that (why else call, unless they're just a massive tool), they could have easily been the one to smother it as well. Hell, they're lucky that it didn't actually become worse in the time it took the firefighters to arrive.

One of our roommates from LA demanded we call the fire department. My buddy and I said “no don’t worry it’s no big deal, we will just turn the gas off behind the stove.” It fixed the problem took 2 minutes. 15 minutes later a full sized fire truck showed up, breaking branches and scratching the fire truck for a “major gas leak” This lady went outside and called the fire department after we told her not to… needlessly wasting everyone’s time. Funny enough I was in the opposite sort of situation. Was doing landscaping on a hiking trail and a lady waved me down telling me there was smoke coming out of a thick grouping of bushes and she thought she could see the glow of a small fire. She tried dumping her 500 mL water bottle, nothing. I tried dumping my 1.5 L bottle, nothing, so we called the fire department saying there was a small brush fire and we had no water left to put it out ourselves. Fire crew shows up with a large pale of water, nothing. They tried an extinguisher, nothing. So they had to tell me to move my work truck out of the way so they get the fire truck onto the trail and unload the water they had in there. If I recall correctly the story was a homeless person made camp there and had a campfire going... in the middle of a heat wave... and in the morning just threw a few handfulls of dirt on it to "put it out" before leaving and things went downhill from there.
@ameliaduncan3236
20 күн бұрын
Even in a heat wave, it can still get pretty chilly at night. The homeless person should have put the fire out properly, but I'm just saying, they probably didn't have a fire for no reason. They may have needed it to keep warm, or even just to have a warm meal. People who have never had to live at the mercy of the elements, don't tend to understand how much of a struggle it is to not have basically everything at their disposal. If you get chilly you can grab a blanket, put on a sweater, or turn on your furnace. If you want a warm meal, you can just use your stove, or toss something in the microwave. A homeless person doesn't have that luxury.

I felt real bad and felt even worse when I asked the 911 operator if I needed to pay for them to come and check up on me (they told me that i’d only pay if I rode in the Ambulance and actually used their stuff). They were all super nice when they showed up in mere minutes, which helped me ignore the pain I was in for a bit. I wasn’t overdosing but they told me to call again if it got worse. @@kadenthoreson9915 I did some research on this and it depends on the jurisdiction. Some jurisdictions are like you have to be 18 or above period. And other allow people at 16 to joins as long as they have a guardian’s permission or they are emancipated though that is not the set rule because some jurisdiction do allow you to join at 16 no question asked as long as you do the training. This is because they have a low population and they need the man power because of brush fires and local wild fires

Actually had to call on a mulch fire once. Me and Like 10 other people dumped bottles of water on it. Then the chipotle guy came out with a fire extinguisher. Just kept flaming back up. Fire department got there and they had to use shovels to dig it up and then flood the whole median with water.

If this happens in a mulched area, it can actually be serious. The flames can spread underneath the mulch and be much bigger than the little bit of smoke you can see. I worked at a college and someone threw their cigarette butt in the mulch. It smouldered and someone told me about it. I looked and didn't see much, so I poured a little water on it. The smoke went away. A little while later I got multiple calls for a fire in the mulch. I went and looked and about 6 feet of mulch was smoking. I went and got a bucket and started bailing water on it from the fish pond! It took a lot of water to finally get it all out. I ended up having to rake the mulch around and drowning it more.

Man, that's WEIRD. I get the feeling my family would be the OTHER end of this specturm: We had a washing machine light on fire in the basement, and didn't even bother to call the fire department. Did talk to electrician though, just to be certain it wasn't electrical. Dryer sheets falling behind washer and getting sucked into intake equals fire, apparently. At least with old washing machines. We were pretty flabbergasted it wasn't the dryer that was on fire, honestly. Both units were over 30 years old. First hint there was anything wrong was walking through the hallway upstairs by the laundry chute and smelling burn, followed by a glance up at the ceiling, to see that yes, there was smoke, then a glance down at the laundry chute to see that there was indeed abnormal light coming up from downstairs. Then grabbing the extinguisher and double-timing downstairs, one person to fight the fire, the second to go flip the breakers in case it was electrical. The wonders of having basic knowledge of 'how things work'. On the other hand, we did call firedepartment and police when a neighbor quite literally molotov'd the guy across the alley. Fire marshall and police were really happy that it was called in immediately. Even moreso that, as it turns out, 3 people on the block had security cameras that were pointed the correct direction to catch it.
