Seen too many vehicle ejections, I remember the most prominent one embedded in my brain permanently was a 3 casualty crash with one survivor being a 15 month old baby, the only one buckled in and properly positioned in the car seat. In the backseat was a nearly perfectly preserved brain sitting next to the baby. One of the most unsettling sights that I don’t wish upon my worst enemy. It’s nice to have people to talk to and share similar experiences with.

Wouldn't make much of a difference. Plenty of people know the dangers of not driving safely, but carry a heavy-handed dose of 'Won't happen to me' mentality. Why do you think there are still drunk drivers despite "Don't drink and drive" messages being everywhere for decades, or people who still smoke and vape despite knowing that it can cause lung cancer, blood clots, strokes, COPD, and a bunch of other health issues? The arrogance of people who are determined to be (and STAY) stupid is pretty impenetrable.

Crazy thing is the most absurd stories are in some capacity true. There’s been numerous WW2 era movies made that scenes have been made “more believable” because the actual events people wouldn’t believe happened. Most notably A Bridge too Far. A scene where a British officer quickly ran across a road to avoid incoming fire. What had actually happened was the guy calmly walked across the street. An attempt to show his men to not be afraid or something like that. It was altered because they didn’t think anyone would actually believe what would happen.

I always found broken bones fascinating. As a kid, I’ve seen a girl’s arm dangle at a weird angle from her forearm after a fall. She wasn’t crying or anything, just shocked and repeating “I’m okay, I’m okay.” The other kids around her were really pale and scared. And me being an idiot kept thinking, “it’s not supposed to bend like that right? I bet she has superpowers.”

I crushed my collarbone and broke my elbow a few years ago while I was cycling and hit a pothole at about 45mph that I didn't think was as bad as it was while I was rolling up to it.. anyway, I wrecked in front of a couple of old ladies who were coming out of a restaurant, I immediately stood up and started calming the ladies down and telling them I was fine, nothing was noticeably wrong from my perspective. I could lift both arms just fine, no real pain other than a normal wreck, which I've done countless times on bike (lifetime cyclist). They left and luckily one of my friends that was also an emt was right across the street from where I wrecked and she came out to check on me. She was like, idk I think you dislocated your shoulder, but even she didn't think it was as bad as it was. She asked if I wanted to go to the hospital and I was like, oh no, I'm fine lol.. she asked three more times getting more serious sounding each time until I was like.. yeah.. I probably need to go.. My collarbone was in pieces and some nearly in my chest.. I even refused painkillers.. until they tried to have me lay down on the ct scanner about 3 hours after the break.. It was around then I started realizing how much pain I was actually in. Now I've got a 6 inch plate and 6 screws in my collarbone.. the elbow wasn't displaced, so I just got a sling for it. I definitely would NOT want anyone to have to go through what I did and the recovery, but it is wild thinking back about how I felt more or less ok and could move the arm like there wasn't anything wrong. I'm fully recovered, the surgeons did a wonderful job and I lift weights all the time with no real issues. You'd never know I had such an injury unless I showed you the scar lol

Guy in school snapped his femur during a tackle (Rugby), but didn't realise. He tried to stand up to mouth off at the guy who tackled him, but kept falling down. Once we realised what was happening about half our team started dry heaving, while the rest of us were pinning him to the ground to stop moving. The only thing he said was "huh..is supposed to do that?". No Chris, no it's not supposed to do that. The rest of your body is aligned North South and but your leg is going South East.

One item I covered in classes was, "Do yourself a favor. For a traumatic amputation, don't put the severed limb up near their chest. 'Hey, that looks like my watch! It *is* my watch!!!' and then all hell breaks loose on the monitors, totally double-plus ungood. Put it where they can't see it, say, near the foot of the litter and avoid psychogenic shock, please". Yeah, saw that one happen once, wasn't much fun for patient or treatment team. Although, there was one accident scene that was... Interesting. Single vehicle crash, tree vs car, tree won. Red goop all over, Mom screaming about her infant in the car. Turned out that infant was strapped securely in a car seat and OK. The goop was an unsecured watermelon, which slammed through the windshield. Worse one was a civilian volunteer EMT that was late for duty, due to a call on the way into the unit. When I approached him, ready to ream him a new orifice, I noticed a fixed gaze, monotone answers and asked what delayed him, already on high alert that something fucked him up mentally. Infant decapitation. On the way in, he picked up a call on the radio/scanner for a single car crash. The infant was not secured and went partially through the windshield. I pulled his personnel file, called his Chief and suggested the department psychologist evaluate him ASAP. The Chief picked him up personally and drove him to the shrink, he was fit for duty the following month. Caught HEAT rounds for dismissing him on my judgement, but as section sergeant, it's my damned call and I made it and the Battalion Commander agreed. Ducked a major PTSD hit and loss. Take care of your people, they'll take care of you when you need it.
