Wait Jared Polin....the all 'know Lin' has been telling us that the Z9 Autofocus doesn't work.....so did he lie all this long or did he not 😅😅😅😅

😂😂😂 I mean...everyone has their own opinion haha. I know his focus is more on photo where perfect focus is far more crucial. It is also crucial in video of course, but clips can still be usable at times even if they aren't perfect. With that said, I just feel like the Z 9 has been wonderful for me and I just want to share that perspective.

@@AaronSpieler same here. I have had my Z9 for close to 1 year and it's been absolutely the best hybrid camera I've used so far. I sold my Sony bodies except the A7c.

I don't claim that it is better than the other cameras. I am just sick of Nikon getting a bad rep when people just seem to judge it so harshly. As if the other camera brands don't have their issue and quirks. I can't see myself switching any time soon. Although, Nikon defineitly needs a camera that is on par with the Z 9 AF, but is at more of an entry level price

Great video! The time you took to run those tests and then do the comparison was just superb. I wonder how this test would replicate on bird AF. Thanks for this very useful video!

Regarding the truck scene. You can change settings for how fast camera reacts when subject is blocked. Maybe I missed you mentioning that.

I did mention it while recording and then cut it from the video. You aren't the first person to mention it, so lesson learned on cutting out key details haha. But yes, I am aware of that. I had put the sensitivity and speed as high as they could go to intentionally try to see where the camera would "mess up" so to speak. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for taking the time to do the video. On the subject tracking, you have to adjust the sensitivity of the tracking/focus in camera to get good results. This is pretty much the same for all cameras, if set correctly, the camera won't switch to another subject too quickly when blocked or obscured and the tracking will be better. I think for better results, you should have used the subject tracking feature, since it is a moving subject. I didn't notice anything to indicate the tracking feature was activated, I may be wrong, let me know if that was active or not. I am now using the A7R V as a hybrid camera and have been playing around with the subject tracking for video, to learn how to best use it. Typically for video, I leave it in the setting the camera comes with but there are times, when it will stray and I know I have adjusted it to track when I put a product up in front of my face and I want it to switch faster to the item. I had some challenges with my Z6 II doing this and it seems it would occur more when the light is low, that is one of the reasons I opted to get the A7R V. I have to now learn how to setup different shooting modes so I can select depending on what I am shooting. I was familiar with doing this on Nikon cameras, I have to figure that out on the Sony gear.

I appreciate your feedback! I did a take while filming where I explained how I setup the speed and sensitivity for the AF. Unfortunately, I chose to remove it from the final edit before uploading and I guess I should have left it in there haha. With that said, I change the speed and sensitivity very often on purpose for different results. For this test, I intentionally set the speed/sensitivity to as aggressive as possible so that if it made any mistakes it would be noticeable. But I do not leave it on the most aggressive settings on normal shoots. As far as the subject tracking goes, I had it on Auto Area AF so that it was using the whole senor. I wanted to make sure that it had every opportunity to wander off to a bush or something in the background, but it never did. And since the Z 9 has human, animal, and vehicle detect, I did switch between those modes for each test so the camera would only be looking for each of those subjects. That can be seen at that start of each pixel peeping chapter in the video. As far as generic subject tracking, any time you are filming yourself is difficult since you can't control the camera while filming and have to really trust that it is doing what you want. With my Z 6, Z 50, and Z 9, I have not really ran into the issue you have mentioned in particular, but I can completely understand what you are getting at. Have you had any of those issues with the A7R V? Also, have you had any focus breathing issues with the Sony? That is one thing I commonly see with Sony cameras. Thanks for your feedback though!!!

@@AaronSpieler I can understand the leaving out stuff part, sometimes during editing, I find I have gone off topic, so just cut out a chunk of content. I used to set my sensitivity high on the Z6 II for videos when putting stuff in front of me, it took me some time to sort it out but, there are times when I had nothing but myself in front of the camera and it would be hunting. So far the A7R V, it sometimes will grab a face and track it on the screen but the video comes out fine. This is all just testing though. I have a few videos up on my channel on the camera and how I’ve been using it. The focus breathing compensation works well to control that but it crops in a bit, so I got wider lens to offset that. When the FX30 was announced and they mentioned that feature, I started to search for Sony lens that were designed to minimize that, so I could use them for video work. I picked up the FX30 along with the 11mm 1.8 for vlogging and the 16-35 f4 PZ to work as a standard (24-52) zoom, plus the fact that it’s an internal zooming lens made it a good size to work with and the overall package was light. Later I got the 15mm 1.4 and that lens saw a lot of use in low light settings. Went with the 24-105 f4 over the 24-70 2.8 when I picked up the A7R V as it was lighter and gave me a bit more reach and it also has minimal focus breathing. For both cameras, the stabilization and focus breathing compensation is better than I expected. Even though they satisfy on the tech side, I wish they had better ergonomics.

@@waynerm002 There is no denying that the Z 9 is significantly faster than the other Z cameras, but in some ways that is so be expected since it is considered their flagship. The caveat is that none of the other cameras even come close to the Z 9 speed and they need to fix that sooner than later. I am sure they are aware of that, but I hope that is can solve the price point problem that people have with the Z 9. All that said, I still use my Z 6 and Z 50 (which just got Eye AF in video mode) on a regular basis for interviews and podcast type work. Anything that is sitting or has very little movement in the frame and I still get great results and trust those cameras. Thank you for sharing about the focus breathing compensation feature. I did not know that that existed. That could help explain why I don't see it in every video that is shot with Sony. I am also a believer in f/4 zoom lens and 1.2 prime lenses. For now I am sticking with the 1.8 lenses due to weight. For shooting weddings, the Z 9 with the 50 1.2 would be tough on a gimbal. But hopefully it is something I can switch over to eventually. But it sounds like you have a decent lens line up there. No matter if you have the best cameras, if your glass sucks, it will hold those cameras back. I will try and check out some of your videos at some point!

@@AaronSpieler Thing is, that Z9 is much less than I expected for Nikon’s flagship camera and I was willing to stretch to get one. Now, I’m hoping the Z8 will be the rival to surpass the A7R V, with video features comparable to or surpassing the Z9, R5 II, minus internal Raw recording. I’m looking for a video centric camera from Nikon as they won’t make something lower than the Z9 that excels in both areas however, they do need to improve the autofocus and stabilization to be like Sony and Panasonic, to get them in the game and on video user’s lips. Sony’s lens are lighter and with each new version they are improving them and adding lens that are great for video work. The 1.8 lens is the way to go for gimbal use, that 1.2 is a big boy, great for photography but a bear to use for handheld video or even on a gimbal. Switching my gear over to Sony allowed me to have 2 bodies and 4 lens and come in a few ounces less than the Z6 II and 4 lens. The photographer part of me wanted to get the 28-70 2.8 and the 50 1.2 but, after seeing how things looked with the first 2 lens and how much easier they were to work with, I didn’t feel the need to go for those 2 GM lens. I really hope Nikon puts a multi-angle screen on their new cameras. I love using it in the A7R V, I can shoot video handheld like the Z6 and flip out the screen when I want to record myself. I’m excited to see what Nikon will give us next.

The cost to feature ratio of the Z9 is pretty incredible. That is why I did the cost comparison in my last video. Obviously not a perfect comparison, but I wanted to at least bring that point up for people that may not realize it. I do agree that a video based camera would be great. That is the big pain point for Nikon. As well as auto focus, but I have no concerns about that improving with their future cameras. But the longer it takes, the more people will jump ship. Personally, I am a huge fan of the Z9 screen. But I have said for awhile that I don't know why the vari angle screens aren't just the industry standard for these cameras. They are used for so much more than just "normal" shooting. Hopefully it becomes the standard eventually

I know the 2x rule is supposed to be adequate. But, I wonder if playing with the shutter speed even faster would change the hit rate on each frame. Also, I couldn't tell for sure; but, part of that blur could also be due to the lens motor not being able to keep up with the speed of the dog, and the nature of the sporadic motion (nearly off camera and moving rapidly and unpredictably forward or back. I'd also be curious to know if using certain video codecs affects the amount of processor power that might otherwise be used for the tracking, etc. Super interesting. Thanks.

Thank you for the feedback! For this particular test, I wanted to make the camera fail. I wanted to see if I could make it slip up in a realistic way. Therefore, I opted to keep all of the settings that same for each test so that the only variable that was changing was the human, animal, and vehicle detect aspect. In a real shoot, I would have switched over to 120 fps and had a shutter of 1/250 or faster if needed. Also keeping in mind that motion blur is the desired result for the clip in actuality, but for pixel peeping it can distort the results a bit. As for the dog, I do agree. I have a 1.8 lens which isn't quite as fast as the 1.2, but I think more people will be using a 1.8 lens do to size, weight, and cost between to 2 50mm that Nikon offers right now. The codecs might play a part, but I am using the ProGrade Cobalt cards that have a 1700 and 1500 read/write speed. So I am not sure if that would play that big of a part. Hopefully not since they are all native internally to the camera. But all good things to consider if I do something like this again, so thank you!

At 10:10, the dog is in focus. I was at 50mm and the dog was about 25 yards away or so. It is 4k footage with a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second. There was a little bit of motion blur because of that and she was very small in the frame to begin with. Also keep in mind that the video is a screen recording and loses some quality during upload that might be causing it to look out of focus on your screen. As far as the truck goes, that was my first time using the Z 9 to track a vehicle in video mode, so I can't say if it has improved or not from previous firmwares

@@AaronSpieler Yeah, the dog looks out of focus on KZitem, but you see the actual footage at home. Just curious with the recent Autofocus adjustments if it really make a significant difference or not. Lots of people shooting small objects like Songbirds 10-15 feet away have had problems focusing and losing focusing and then not getting focus back no matter what they do. That's the main issue I want to see fixed. Or a bird in flight and then losing focus completely and never being to re-acquire it again. Has the stickiness been addressed?
