I always try to create myself as close as possible. I even took pictures of myself from different angles to get the face as perfect as I could. To me that's the only way to really feel apart of the game. If Dragon Age Inquisition didn't have a character creation option, I probably wouldn't even play it.

I usually try and make an attractive badass woman with a thicker curvy body and big muscles. That's the exact opposite of me who is really skinny and has no muscles what so ever. I'd say the only similarities I usually keep is my super long hair which goes down to my waist but I normally make it a different colour since brown is kind of boring on my she-hulk character. This episode was really cool and I can't wait to see part 2 of this topic.

I aways make a girl, and usually she has the pattern of appearance in almost every game. I noticed that just recently, and it kinda makes sense to me. Short hair, usually blonde or white- haired, with a thin face, serious looks. And green (or puprle) eyes. I've aways wanted to have green eyes. many times (like in Dragon age I) I give her underlining face tatoos, I feel like they really add character to the overall image. Basically, I give her the traits I like In a girl, or those that I would like to have If I was a girl. What does that say about me?

When I create a character I usualy do a normal guy, just average looking dude (never played a female). My characters don't look like me thou, but for the decisions I make in a game, it's aways what I think it's right. I have a set of 3 names I use, and I do a backstory for the character, I can't do it in dragon age because it's there already but I can say somenthing like, "this guy was atacked by a creature when he was young and that's why he has that scar in his face". Everything in my characters has a reason to be there, but his personality is always like mine.

And it wasn't until about a couple years ago that I'd realized that it was my outlet for my femininity and realized that I actually should have been a girl... KidSavesTheWorld -Again You're not. Sometimes people just have a lot of pent up inner femininity that they allow to be expressed through games. That doesn't mean you're gender dysphoric or anything, just that you like to play females. In my case, there were many other things that pointed me toward my true identity, not just my affinity for female characters. Just be yourself and if you feel comfortable in your own skin, just be the way you want.

I always try to make a character, with just by looking at them, you can read their past on their face, or on their body. You can see all they have been through. Yet, they strive to keep going. To better themselves, to better the world around them. No matter what happens to them, as long as they see the people and life around them, actually happy and full of life, that is good enough for them.

Very interesting. Personally, I very rarely try to recreate myself in character creation. Rather, I create a character with a back-story to be the protagonist in the game, one that fits with the way I'm going to play the game. E.g, my first run through of Skyrim was a male dunmer, as I wanted to be a spell sword. Then I chose a female bosmer for my archer play through, and then a male breton for a necromancer/mage run. The only games I create myself are games where I play online with friends in LAN parties, such as GTA5, where I don't care for the story or the characters motivations.

I never re-create my own look in any game. Maybe bc im asian n i prefer caucasian face so that it would fit the storyline better. I always hv my own ideal beauty and realized that every character i made doesnt matter in skyrim, the sims or saint row, they all are looking the same. I sometime try to make the face resembles models more, and i like to make it look like lindsey wixson. I also never make my character look stupid w stupid makeup on her bc i feel the need for her to be the perfect looking creature. Maybe if i make the character look like me it would be a different experience so i'll try it one day. Also since im a woman and if they gv me the option i chose to be female character bc there are more customization details than men and i have always wanted to be a female warrior irl

I used to make my characters just simply look cool. Almost always an average male character with short straight brown/black hair. With either an average or slim build. I wouldn't go overboard or anything. Just Generic, but not too close to the default settings. I would sometimes make them Asian, but most of the time just Caucasian. (I am Caucasian btw.) However though, lately I've been trying to make my characters as close to myself as possible. I once had my Mom's help with making my character on Saints Row: The Third, and made my character look pretty much the same as me. When Saints Row 4 came out, I transferred that character to it, and made a few tweaks and adjustments. After that, my character looked EXACTLY like me. Just a little older. A lot of people were surprised how closely he resembled me, and that made me happy. However, it got weird when I did a mission like that on Saints Row 4, and my character ended up doing a stripper dance.

Oh yeah, I also sometimes play as female characters, but it depends on the game. One major example is Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. I think that a LOT of the clothing/armor in that game only looks good on female characters, and that the male characters don't really seem to match my type of character creation. I also made my Warlock on Destiny a girl, however I now wish I made them a guy. I only thought that the warlock robes would look much better on a female character, but I was kinda wrong. Some robe types did, but most of them didn't. Anyways, one big reason why I sometimes play as female characters is because I want it to match my class. If I'm a mage, it would increase my chances of playing as a female. However, if I'm a healer, I most likely will definitely play as a girl. If I'm a warrior, then male. Rogue, Male or Female. Archer, Male or Female. etc. I think you get the point by now. Lol.

I love creating both female and male characters. No matter what gender they are, I always look into them for something that I'd like to see, depending of the game - because not all such genre games allows you to make a splitting image of yourself. For me this should really turn into a very often seen thing in these types of games - being able to create your splitting image, no matter more muscular or tiny, or exactly as you are. If I create a more muscular version of me, keeping all of the most important details distinct me from others, I'd have nothing to worry about, and vise versa. Hearing what the other parts are going to include made me interested in waiting for them, because such games have impact on people, and it has been proven (life changing impact), but there are always exceptions.

I almost always make a male character (I only make female characters to see differences in story, in games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age), but I don't try to make it look like me. Simply put, I don't think that I'm a very attractive person, so I usually give my characters only a few features that I actually share. I have rather short, reddish brown hair and green eyes, and I'm a bit on the pale side, so my characters usually end up having those features. I usually make the skin tone a bit darker than my own. I also include facial hair that's close enough to my own, most often a goatee or trimmed beard. Other than that, I usually leave other features at default levels. The first time I started messing around with face sliders in ME1, I ended up with a monster. If I can't work out anything good, I'll just play the default character. I did this with Mass Effect and Dragon Age for my main playthroughs (I felt like Shepard's voice matched the default face perfectly, and I just couldn't make anything decent in DA). For some games, I'll play around a bit, trying to make an older or "better" version of myself, I suppose. My Hunter in Destiny actually looks quite a lot like me, except for the lack of facial hair and addition of muscles. There is the occasional boring day where I'll run through a mission or two of Mass Effect with a new character. How did James at Inside Gaming put it? "Sliders to max"? I try to forget those save files after I delete them...

As a writer and an artist, (unless its my first play through a game 'cause I do end up creating a character that has one or more, as I actively limit them, facial characteristics of mine and whatever else my artistic interpretation of my spirit may produce,) I always have a storyline or are making a storyline involving my avatar. In that way I use many character builds as a sandbox test for possible plots and personalities to populate my stories.

Validating elements of ourselves we feel awkward about is a very astute observation. I have a prominent Irish nose, and yes, I often like to include some variant on that prominence, whether roundish and wide or epic and Roman, and over the years, I've given myself the solace that such a feature adds interest to otherwise "pretty" or "handsome" faces. Apart from that, my objective is often just to escape the generic middle-ground, and get as far from the pregen basic models as I possibly can.

I don't try to make my characters look like me at all. First, I select the class based on how I want to play, then I think about all the characters I've created while writing stories, and pick one that would most resemble that class. Then, I choose the character's appearance based on what I imagined them to look like (usually fairly attractive, though, since I will be looking at them the whole game).

Another amazing episode. I'm one of those "30%" of men who play as women. I used to always play a man, much who looked like myself, who was "good" in alignment, but lately (last 5 years or so) I've pretty much always aligned myself as a woman who was "bad/evil"......perhaps a twist in some of the games I've played in that time (Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Mass Effect, etc) where playing as a "bad" person is actually funner than playing as a "good" person.....but I'm not sure. Maybe I make my game avatars more in the likeness of someone I'd like to be "with", rather than "be"....but I assume that would take a psycho-analyst session to determine. :)

The characters I make in games aren't driven by my appearance but more of how I'm going to play them. Like a pencilI use the character creator tool to make interesting looking characters that would match the tone I plan on playing the character like. In Dragon Age Origins I played a strong but idealist female/elf/mage who fought and became a symbol for elves and mages alike. In Dragon age 2 played a humorous bearded/male/warrior because an outsider playing a role in the mage rebellion for their freedom is interesting. Also if I didn't I would've gotten an annoying brother and I was a mage before. In Dragon age Inquisition I made a mustachioed male/Quanari/mage with ram horns who's kind as can be but doesn't mind getting his hands dirty if someone gets in his way.

When I make my first character in a game, I usually follow a set of traits that I find desirable: dark brown hair, green eyes, a bit of facial hair for males, etc. I may only possess a handful of traits that I like to use, while the other aspects are things I kinda wish I had. However, in recent years I have reached that point where I make more female starters than male. I think it's just that I may find the female I made to just look better aesthetically. Even then, she still has traits like green eyes and brown hair. Even when my character is far from me, it still represents me in a way.

This is so FUN! I love this. I've always wondered about that odd projection, kinda voyeuristic relationship between player and avatar. Or just that relatability versus escapism equation between audience and protagonist. And most importantly, WHY do we human beings love doing that? Or is it a need? Seeing how throughout human history, tales of heroes and adventure transcends all mediums of communication. RPG video game was just the first medium that tangibly allowed players/audience to build and visualize their hero/character/protagonist.

as far as naming goes, I am in love with warcraft names, and adopted the style. The first name is almost random, fantasy-like gibberish, like Gulron or whatever, but I try not to mismatch them with races, I wont be an elf called Gnarxcor, that just sounds wrong. The last names have ties with the class itself, or the nature of its power, what it represents. Runes of Magic, warden/mage Swiftthorn, as mage uses wind, wind is swift, and warden skills are nature based. Druid/rogue: Darksoil, as druid uses earth spells, but this combo is dark damage based.

When I play as a female, I generally find myself behaving differently. For example, I never worried about how bad my armor looked in Skyrim when I was playing a male character, but as soon as I made a female one, Skyrim became a bit of a fashion show in a sense. But I don't do that with all games, because when I played a female in Fable II, I was ruthless and emotional, whereas my male character was reserved and phlegmatic. And then there's The Sims... but that's a whole different beast. One thing I have noticed is that I generally go into character creation with either no plan at all (In which case it usually ends up looking like me), or with a very specific goal.

I'm sure my issue is that I'm indecisive, overwhelmed by "what if I do the other option..." train of thought, and probably hate being in real life. would rather spend my time playing some fantasy land instead of deal with abusive family, never-ending bills, extreme loneliness, lack of purpose in life, etc etc etc... anyway back to Garrisons! :D

I have a very specific way of creating characters, I always make one as myself usually the first or second and I make this one how I would be with my personality my traits my choices my height and weight and fighting preferences (usually a mage since I'm physically quite weak). Then once I beat the game I make other characters by the dozen, I make them fat and small and dwarf-like or hug and towering and strong or sexy and sweet and beautiful or old and wicked and cruel. Then as I play them I make stories that link each of them together I band them around my character in a story I link to them emotionally so that I can play a game a thousand different ways and always stay connected to my creations.

That's because "immersion" is a ludicrous term anyway. You can connect to or relate to your in game character through either character traits and development as given to us by the developer or through self driven narrative instances created by the player. We're talking about playing on a television or monitor not a holodeck so no matter whether you have creation ability over a character in game or not you will never be really immersed in that world or actually be that character.

When I create a character I tend to come up with something that fits within the setting presented. In Skyrim that would be a strong man, with unkempt hair and a big beard. I've always found it odd/creepy that so many men create female avatars to play as. That's something I've never done in my entire gaming life (I've been playing for 26 years). Does anyone else feel like this? Perhaps I'm the odd one. I've got a pretty open mind about most things I think, but I've never been able to get around this one. Can't wait to see what they say...

Well the reason I play as a female character sometimes is cause I think it's refreshing to see a female kicking everyone's ass and being all badass n' shit plus being not just some dumb female character like some games make them as which is so degrading to women who play videogames that's just my opinion do with that what you will

You ever notice how it's the guys who don't play as female avatars that seem be so insecure about it happening? I do it because I want to. I don't care so much as to why I want to. It's just fun. If you don't find it fun and choose not to do it that's fine, but there's nothing 'wrong' with it. Would you even bat an eyelid if a female decided to play as a male? I doubt it, and surprise surprise, that's sexist double standard. I am very curious as to what the research will show in part 2, however.

I do it for 2 reasons 1 women are attractive to me therfore id rather seea pretty face mroe than a guys 2 I just connect iwth women more than guys so if Im playing a rooleplaying game it makes sense I choose a girl because I understand them better .

***** your statement assumes that every guy that plays a female does it only for the the romance and sex scenes, which is not true I never do any of the romance options when playing a female avatar. I play all races and genders to experience everything the game has to offer. excluding the lesbian and gay ramance options cause I don't want to see that. and I ask why are you so threatened that their are gamers that play the game the way it was intended.

***** and what are you basing that on. just by reading the comments I see more ppl say they play female and male chars equally to get the story exp then just playing female chars. posting your own opinion as fact does not make it true.

I create characters based on the fiction I write. Depending on the game's time period or genre I adjust the character to fit and to discover new sides, but they are always the same people.

I usually end up choosing a preset and then changing it to look like an ideal me. He usually has black or white hair (in a Mohawk of some kind), wears a combination of black, grey and red. I'd put the muscle slider at about 2/3 of the way between buff and skinny, there would be tattoos or war paint of some description and they'd usually be a Rogue or sneak-based character. I'd say more but the comment is plenty long enough.

This is interesting - For my first DA:I playthrough, I made a character who is very unlike me in pretty much every physical way possible (except for his gender - I did decide to play as a dude this time around). I have found myself not engaging with the story as much as I had in previous Dragon Age titles. I thought it was the game, but maybe there's a subconscious disconnect between me and my Inquisitor. Good stuff to think about. Thanks, Reality Check!

I have heard others say, and I think along the same lines, that some people create a character based on what they would like to be or dream to be and cannot achieve because of modern day limitations.

Most of the time I stick with the default character unless they do not look presentable to me. In Skyrim I don't alter appearances at all. In Dark Souls I tend to mess with hair. Only in games where you create a character from scratch do I tend to be more into the creation. Even then, it's still barebones.

I always try to create a mage, with long straight hair like elves in depicted in movie Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Since the hair is usually a technical issue in games, this obstacle to create ideal god like character is replaced with some more common. Still, white hair is dominant.

I tend to go as far away as possible as I can from what I actually am when playing videogames with character creation or selection. If there is an option to play non-humans,I'll go with that. Can I make the character extremely short or as tall as the game engine will allow? Then I'll go for one of those options. Mods make things even better for me when I can pick a third option when it comes to gender. I only have at best a few hours at a time to play video games and to inhabit the worlds that the devs devise while I have the rest of my life to be me so I might as well make it count by exacting utmost agency over or applying the maximal allowable creativity to my fictional appearance. It is the best opportunity that we ever get to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. In the case of games with character creation features,we just happen to be able to select which shoes we will be walking in.

mines really weird, I have a whole family running through my games and they are all sisters, transported through time and space to different lands. My friends make it a big joke but it feels nice to be able to weave my own little back story into every game where I can create the Manning sisters.

I always just made a character I thought would BE in the world of the particular game I was currently playing. I don't mean I would ONLY make Njords in Skyrim or whatever. Very oddly enough I just seem to make different characters for different moods, how I am feeling in the moment, kind of like how a playlist of music (or just mine) has a variety of genres. If I just got off work and it was a crap shift then I play maybe a melee character to just decimate everything throw bloodlust instincts. I know that was a bit of a sidestep but that translates into how that melee character looks, or who ever else I am playing or mood I am in. I am a natural story teller or world creator so making all sorts of characters are needed for me to go through a multitude of experiences through different gameplays. But truth be told I find it silly to make yourself in a fantasy setting, you can be ANYTHING and you are a JOE or JILL, again. My mind usually makes beings I can get buried in, a character that lets me live another life in a VERY foreign land. For instance in WoW my favorite character is a female troll healing druid. I made her because I wanted to help with magic instead of hurt (hurting/dps being the norm), I am a guy, I am in fact not of the troll race, and I can't cast magic so I figured why not make something I can life another life through. If there was ever a game where you forced to play as yourself and forced to do everything you did in real life I guess you'd have to but damn that game would be boring... and please don't reply with something like "that's called life"... really >_>

I always want to make character that is like me in games like gta but in more medieval fantasy games I make a particular character that resembles a old, thoughtful, wise warrior or master. Having grey long locks & a suitable beard. If I decide to make a female I would make one that has features particularly like to see in a women. Black hair a definite face etc. People that don't make characters that resembles them creates a character that represent a piece of them or a person they know & love. For example the elder I described represent that I see myself as wise & thoughtful. The female I described represent that I think of myself as firm in mind (definite face) and dominate in some case (hint the black color were black usually over write colors)

I've always made characters - I think up a personality and adjust the appearance around that. So if I'm making a grizzled veteran soldier I will make put harder lines to their face and make them more gaunt than if I was say making a fresh faced young mage. But then decisions I make in CC will also fine tune their personality - the guy with the permanent scowl is not going to be my naive lawful good character, it would just clash in every cutscene.

I most usually tank up my characters, regardless of gender, and either make the face ridicolous or somewhat good looking, with scars, more often than not. Often the eyes are something evil-ish. This is no matter how I choose to play, for example, Skyrim, since I often blend my player styles. I usually start up with a character with abilities like a tank and then choose to sneak around, for the joy of the hunt.

I always build a character in a game the same way I create a character for a story. I've no interest of inserting myself and I'm more into creating a character with his/her own personality and beliefs that may be separate from my own. This is why I can play as a man or woman depending on the game. Although, some preferences I have are imported to them, so they are not completely independent.
