I'm a community palliative care nurse. Don't wait to do things you want to do. You don't have infinite time. A single diagnosis can change your life and it can come at any time. I've seen people go from "healthy" to dead in less than 2 months. I've met people who just bought a new home and moved to a new city for retirement, received a cancer diagnosis, and died before all the boxes can be unpacked. Save what you need, but don't over-save to the point where you compromise your enjoyment.

I'm also a nurse (not palliative care) and have seen similar stories numerous time. Find the balance. Do things throughout your life, not just at the end of life. Find a way to enjoy life all along the way, not just the future that may never come. That's not an excuse to recklessly blow your money, but to seek balance between saving and spending.

Hi Nicol So very true as financial adviser I see this happen more and more every day. Every now and again when I share some nice outings, I get people saying yes they will add it to their bucket list. My basic comment, if you really like it, plan for it now and the h@ll of that stupid list, you will never end up following that list. Wishing you more than enough!

It is so true, if you don't have your health the retirement picture is not going to be as you dreamed. I did the same thing my husband retired at 60,I continued to work ,wanting to pad the nest egg for retirement together. My husband has diabetes and macular degeneration and is going blind. certainly not in the plan.what has happened is I have retired to be a caregiver after I had already taken care of my mother 8 yrs (alzheimers). It is a labor o love but I will never see what I worked so hard for. Pay attention to your health and retire together, you can't strategize for everything life may throw at you. Bless you and be well.

Thank you so much for bringing up this topic. I agree. No one tells you about this. I just retired a few months ago at 60 years of age and I am so glad I did. Retiring during a pandemic is not as fun as I would like but it is still a vacation everyday even if I can't travel yet. My stress level has gone way down now that I do not have to go to work. I wanted to be healthy enough to enjoy my retirement, so I chose to do it early. I worked out a budget and practiced using that budget for 15 weeks before I actually retired. It is working much better than I imagined.

I totally agree! I retired last October after 41 years as a Respiratory Therapist working in a Neonatal Intensive Care the majority of that time. Stress was the number one reason I retired. Just subbed. One of the most important topics I've ever seen listed on the internet! Husband and I are over 70. Advice from this perspective: (1.) be very careful and knowledgeable about your diets. When you eat remember your mouth can keep you going. It just needs to know when and what to eat. Choosing the right foods is harder than you might think. By our age, half of us have diverticulosis! (2) Motion is Lotion... You stay ALIVE because of the motions you choose. For us it's tai chi and yoga. It took over two years of guided instruction to really feel comfortable with the forms, but pain is not a part of our lives. So the hours spent on exercise are worth it! (3) expect great changes in perspective. Among our best friends, key words are "Pace yourself." I feel seventeen, but young people's exercise (skateboards, etc.) are no go..... (4) you're retiring from a job, that's all. There so many wonderful ways to invest yourself. I helped raise all my grandkids, wouldn't trade the memories for the world! My husband still teaches, just not for pay. (5) life is a good wine. Savor each day, each moment. It'll never be quite the same again. Blessings.

That is excellent advice. My partner and I both retired in our early 60's - together! Part of the reason we retired a bit early was to maintain our health, so we could travel and spend time together. COVID has set some limits on the traveling, of course. But we have still managed to visit family in other states and use our timeshare more often. We exercise at the same (or sometimes higher) level as we did in our 40's and 50's and watch our diet. That doesn't mean we will never get sick, but it does help us feel good and strong on a daily basis. Much luck to you both in the future. I'm so glad I found your channel!

That’s interesting. My husband and I were lucky enough to retire early, we were 56 and 54 but as my husband is older I did chose to work an extra three years. I think your experience is relevant when you both have the same interests and do lots of things together but we have different interests and are a little more independent so my husband’s retirement wasn’t affected at all by the fact I continued to work. We always planned on retiring at 55 because my father who’s 92 has always said life’s just a long weekend and you must make the most of it. He retired at 56 and it’s his ambition to live until at least 96 because he worked 40 years and he wants 40 years of retirement! My mother is also still living and 91. You are quite right about your health, I retired 4 years ago and my health has deteriorated significantly! I don’t think the pandemic has helped. Thanks for sharing your perspective on retirement.

This is an amazing video because it makes a point that many don’t discuss: money cannot buy you health. My wife and I worked six to seven days per week, unless we were on vacation. We were stressed all the time and we were becoming unhealthy as we ate quickly and had less time to exercise. We recognized that we couldn’t keep up this pace for over 20 years. So, we chose to retire in our early 50s. I retired July 2020 and she retired May 2021. We’ve traveled as much as possible during the pandemic. We plan to continue traveling and will also take time to get some house maintenance and repairs. We are eating better and exercising more too. I tell everyone who can retire to retire as soon as financially possible.

Health is very important. Spend more time on your feet then on your backside really helps. I am late fifties and lift wieghts, stretch, balance exercises and everyday I do an aerobic exercise for 45 minutes to break a sweat. I garden a large vegy garden in the summer and snowshoe in the winter in deep snow. I love it a body in motion is a happy healthy body. I retired from a physical intense job 7 yrs ago and don't want to loose the muscle strength. Your age is a number your body condition tells you what age you are. I try to learn something new every winter to keep me alert and engaged. Thank you for your great reminders and a peek into retirement life for you. I do lead a healthy active lifestyle with weight training and excellent nutrition and have done it for over 40 yrs so counting on that to hold up until she can retire. Will def see in a few years if we are able which I believe we will financially to have her retire at 57 or 58. Due to Covid the past three winters have been a write off. Now I’m noticing a drop in my energy level and like you said one has to worry about their health every year going forward. If people want to travel the time to do it if possible is when you are young. Late teens to early 20's is ideal. Your second point may also mean that if the younger partner leaves a job they love, they may not enjoy retirement and resent their partner. The trick to healthy aging is healthy youth. You're right. We need to move and use our brains more than we do. That means walking to the shops, cleaning our own houses, having conversations with people face to face, playing cards, doing crosswords and that Uni degree!

hi Norm and Tina, is true that hard to find the right timing and many are unable to consider earlier retirement due to family support. Personally, I have a dream, on my 53 age retirement now, doing my passionate works as I know if I don't reserve the next 10 years for myself, I am unable to do it at 63 ( eyes vision blur, back pain, easy tired ...etc ). This ten years is the golden period to achieve own dream and health ( I am free to exercise each day, time is decided by me and not my boss XD ). I am with my wife, she run her insurance business well, we discussed five years ago about my retirement as I foreseen the day will come to face reality, I decided to let go the comfort zone ( previous job ) and face the reality earlier, is very important to find your passion, my retirement confirmed to be brand new wonderful chapters, and I am very excited to welcome its comings though 🙂

You are absolutely right about rapidly declining health, as well as extended recovery time from arduous physical workout, as we approach retirement age. I did plenty of travelling in my 30s and 40s. Now that I'm looking at retirement in the not so distant horizon, I know travelling won't be part of my retirement as I've exhausted my eagerness to travel. I encourage everyone to travel in their 20s, 30s, 40s, when they are earning good income. Start cutting back in the 50s. And forget about travelling (if you are not already tired of it) after retirement. Instead, focus on maintaining health with regular physical and mental exercises close to home in a controlled and safe environment. Enjoy retirement by not taking risks when our physical and mental capacity are in decline and dependency grows.

I have listened to your comments with interest but for ourselves, retirement comes down to the issues you mentioned, wealth and health. I am now 75, retired at 70 after a long working life from the age of 15 years old. I was forced to retire but really do not want to retire, Yet health and the need to now take on a caring role for my wife basically curtails a number of things, including travel. Wealth is important if you want to travel but money is always short and always has been, not helped by family decisions. You do have to have a degree of wealth if you want to travel and to do that you both need to work, but when one partner retired at 60 the income stream dries up causing us to eat into the money one has saved or work to just keep a roof over one's head. Then the pleasures of travel are curtailed or you cant travel to some places, As an example, my wife can't climb stairs so anywhere we choose has to have facilities to overcome that problem such as having lifts. Therefore cheaper places are often no longer suitable. or being partially sighted, the simple act of finding one's way around becomes a nightmare. Yes, you can overcome but not all folk can do that. We are fortunate in the UK that we can apply for helps from the government for some things and gain benefits from the other sources, plus income from the pension you have paid for during your working life paid for pension. but like so many others the money often doesn't match the outgoings no matter how careful we budget and plan. I agree totally that there is a need to retire and when is crucial, To retiree early is not possible unless you have a huge pot of money behind you and can rearrange your finances to live comfortably. I can not speak for other countries, but in the UK our retirement age is being made longer and longer and now it 67 years of age and due to rise to 68. You can take early retirement but you risk losing your benefits or you get a smaller pension, later on at the government stated pension retirement age. By that time the ailments of age have often well and truly struck,

Hello Paul, Thanks for sharing your experiences, it is difficult having enough money to survive in retirement. Government policies are making it more difficult. Our Mother’s retired at 60 with the old aged pension, now UK women have to work to 67 to qualify, an extra seven years. We wanted to make this video to emphasize health as we age, so we could perhaps get middle aged people to understand what’s in the future. The one area we were able to do while working was to create a passive income that provides cash flow through licencing photographs that Norm took as a hobby. Equally other people can save money and buy dividend shares. We sold our house and rent an apartment so have access to the capital from the sale, that is our retirement pension. We never had company pension schemes. We are sorry your Wife is having difficulties with mobility and wish you both well.

We didn’t move to Spain until we were 70 and were there for 10 years and at 80 my husband developed cancer and we came back to the UK. My husband passed away and I still travelled until Covid now I am 86 and now develop aches and pains. I now just spend time at home living with my son and enjoy reading and TV we still holiday in Norfolk but no longer going abroad. Love your vlogs.❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for this down to earth honesty about the "downside" of early retirement..very good point..health is wealth indeed.. Still have one year to go before we hit that 60 spot and call it a quit. Luckily my husband and I are of the same age. Taking far le$$ than when retiring at 67 but we want to while we still can have some quality time with his mother of 79 by that time.

You are so right. Not only can't you buy health, you can't buy time. And time is what drove us to retire early at 47 and 58 (and at the same time - you're right about that too). Another thing "they don't talk about" is you don't need as much money as many experts claim so look at your numbers and make your own decisions but put really think it through. I have friends with no children, who have made good money most of their career but refuse to retire until they are 62-65 (they are in their late 50s now). They could have retired in their early 50s but didn't and will never get that time back. It's sad to see. Stay healthy by eating little to no animal food (look to the Okinawans), move often, appreciate the time you have and love your partner, friends and family. Retirement is amazing and worth the budget sacrifices!

Well, you both look fantastic! This is a very real point that is good you talked straight about it. I work in a nursing home and have seen many partners get dementia or other health problems, and the other partner has to work with that somehow. In the USA, healthcare is expensive and needs to be discussed. I am 67, still working because I work part time and enjoy the extra money, plus have time to do some things I want. I have many friends my age that have already passed away too.... so do what you enjoy now and be grateful as much as possible. Love to all!

Thanks so much for watching, we feel it’s a topic that most people are aware of but it gets put to the back of daily life. Have a nice and we do appreciate your comment.

Your topic today is just what has been on my mind lately. Up until till two months ago, I thought I was only 40 years old 😂 Then suddenly I started to feel unwell and that’s what woke me up from my dream to the realization that I will be 70 years old in three months.😱 For most of my life I took my good health for granted. Never had any health concerns so I thought I was a super human. This pandemic was not factored into my list of things to do during my retirement years. I am now looking back at the times when I could have utilized the past ten years, (minus two pandemic years) doing more fun things. I love traveling and I had many more places I planned to visit; including a trip on the Orient Express. Like you guys, I was hoping to spend a winter in Portugal.

I retired at 53, but had a plan in place and it has actually worked better than I thought. I have a pension and only use about 1/3 of it, so saving money and watching it grow solved my financial issues - but I knew I was set financially before I retired. I worked initially part time and slowly allowed myself to transition into full retirement, then when I was ready, I moved out of the country. The new environment and language invigorated me and allowed me to grow. Being physically fit, and mentally fit, are two things I do not hear much about, but have a huge bearing on how successful the retirement years will be.

Oh so true on that 'aging faster' bit. I am 68 and know exactly what you mean. If I look back to my achievements 8 years ago on a daily basis to what I achieve now- the level is quite reduced. What I'd breeze through in a day I now spread out over two. I tell myself I am 'saving stuff for tomorrow' to fill my week, but in fact I just can't handle the load as I once did. My husband is 10 months younger so we really are even stevens as far as energy is concerned which is wonderful. Here in 🇳🇱 official retirement age is being cranked up to 67- my brother in law retires 30th november at 66+8 months. So unless you have a good financial back up plan to survive till the state pension cuts in, one needs to keep up the spirit till 66+. I now try to be more focussed on my health, work out walking all year, biking in three seasons and have a muscle training program I can follow to strengthen those joints to help me stay flexible. What I do need however, is the commitment and stamina to keep up the 'good work'. Great topic and worthwhile spreading this wisdom around. Enjoy the weekend you two and I look forward to more glitter in future videos. 💖 🍷 🥳 🇳🇱 🙋♀️ 🇳🇿

We are so glad we did those 5 years of travelling everywhere before Covid 😷came , at least we have wonderful memories. Great advice about looking after your health! I have one more story: My mother-in-law promised her daughter, my wife, that she wanted to someday take a mother-daughter trip for the first time to Europe. Sadly, my mother-in-law waited too long and came down with Alzheimer's and they never took the trip. In other words, don't wait; start working on your bucket list items now before it's too late! For those of us at retirement age, not only do you need money to retire but you also need a purpose for your life. A retirement without purpose, is a wasted retirement.

This is a very important video. I could see the strain on your faces while you were speaking about it but you did an exemplary job. For decades leading up to my recent retirement (5 months ago...) I took diligent care of my health and my finances. My "mistake" was that I chose to stay on for at least 5 years too long in my profession. I suppose I had a fear of retirement in that I couldn't imagine filling all of those "working" hours with my interests (I do have many actually...cooking travel, golf, reading, exercise, etc) so I kept putting it off. That was a mistake. Norm mentioned about energy levels and overall health sort of dropping off bit by bit as one reaches 65 or so (I am 71). You need to take heed of this comment because - even though I spent decades exercising and watching my nutrition - I've had setbacks in the past 2-3 years that I could not have imagined and neither will you. "Timing" your retirement with your health situation is a far more important decision than timing it with your financial position.

Thank you guys, it the first video I have watch of you thus far, I will definitely like to watch more. You can be sure that I will also share your links to my retirees as your video talk about the real life at retirement. I have found that as a financial advisor although being in the industry for more than 3 decades already and also in my seventies, clients still do not take my advise serious enough as I am not retired. They need to hear it from real people who experience retirement - and that you guys. I would just like to mention a few very important things people should take notice off - something that we also learn during the pandemic. 1. You need a solid guaranteed income to cover your living expenses. 2. You need to have cash, easy available, that you can put your hands on within a couple of days. 3. Be prepared for longevity, the less stress re income you'll have the longer you are going to live. 4. Long term medical care, this could very easily eat up most or all of your savings. Like to hear your opinion on these, not sure if have already mentioned some in previous shows. Wishing you more than enough! 🙏😘 👉🏾👣💪🦅 #Investments #planning # protection #insurance #flyingsolo

Sound advice. I retired at age 48 (wife 46) in 2004. I am now 65 years old and believe me, I know what it feels like to go to bed and wake up with little aches and pains. Its annoying to say the least!! If you plan to retire early and you think the financial side of things are acceptable, do it. Essentially I have been a "retiree" for 17 years and I am content with slowing down although it is sometimes frustrating.

Couldn't agree more. I joined a startup at age 50 that entailed a lot of travel at night all across the US, which became cumbersome within a year due to rapid onset cataracts. Six months after the surgery so I could continue in that job, I ended up with a detached retina when 1000 miles away. Recovery took 5 months, and when I got back to work, I was told that my role would start to entail frequent travel to Indonesia due to a total shift in direction. I'd been warned that my other eye would likely suffer the same fate, and that I should avoid travel. I resigned and spent years trying to find a non-travel role that fit my expertise and it never happened. When I was 61, I had to move my near-90 year old parents into assisted living, then my mom to memory care, then spent almost all of 2020 taking them to doctors before both ended up in the hospital, then the nursing home. During that time, my wife (two years younger than me, just like you two) had to start caring for her 85 year old father with multiple serious issues in our home. All of our parents passed away last year, and we'd hoped to get out traveling...but now "the current situation" has intervened, once again. What we find now is that we look around our home daily and wonder just what we are going to do with all this useless stuff we've accumulated in the past 35 years. I subscribe to quite a few channels featuring couples who travel, and that minimalist goal of living out of a backpack and a suitcase for a year looks pretty good to me now.

Not a very attractive topic, but so glad to see the reality getting some open discussion. The "what are you going to do when you retire" dialogue is so value- laden it can be difficult to answer. Sufficet to say post retirement a lot of time has freed up where I used to commute, perform my work then recover from that effort. Very little time was devoted to recreation, exercise or developing new interests- saving that for retirement. Then a sudden health decline leading to chronic ill-health. The present is the only reality, so say yes more often!

I've considered early retirement for some of these reasons, but the financial reasons are tricky. The good news is that I have a pension plan to look forward to. And I will qualify for retirement in three years. Now, I can retire now, using "early retirement" in that system. BUT, there are significant penalties for retiring early. If I wanted to retire now, I would get less than half monthly than if I wait three years. That is a significant amount of money.... So it really behooves me to wait the three years. The tricky part for me is that our house is looking to be paid off in 5 years. So, my real decision is, can I retire in 3, with two years left of house payments? Running the numbers and still not sure... Thanx for the vid!

Tina and Norm, it was lovely to meet you in Kitchener today at Lisboa. What a surprise when I walked into the shop and thought I recognized you, Tina! And it did, indeed, turn out to be you! Hope you enjoyed your meal and custard tarts😁. I enjoy your videos and look forward to more. Penny of Kitchener

Ageing is not fun. I'm 41 and have been hitting the gym almost daily for years. I hope it pays off in the end.

Thanks to remind us future retirees to take health into consideration for when to retire. At one point of time money becomes unimportant if we don't have the energy or health to spend it. Very wise comments.
