I am from a National Institute of Technology, and I am absolutely disappointed with the curriculum. It's so outdated and useless. I have some friends from IITs and even they have the same feelings. Even in IITs, most of the syllabus is outdated. And the worst part is that it is very difficult to pass these outdated courses because the professors don't even teach properly, some of them just read the slides and give us assignments without giving us time to truly grasp the concepts. The act of studying these outdated courses causes us to lose our creativity and intelligence. We just turn into robots and lose our personalities in the process. I don't blame the engineers for being unemployable, I blame the college. They went into college with happiness and came out broken. It is not the case that engineers are unemployable from birth, the truth is that creative people join college and they are punished for their creativity because colleges only focus on getting marks. And these gifted students slowly start "decaying" because of the toxic environment in college and end up turning into broken men/women with no skills and no desire to achieve great heights. I am completely against JEE. Why does a computer science aspirant need to study physics, chemistry and mathematics to get into a computer science program? They should test their coding skills as well as their knowledge in computer science. Why can't we just write a mathematics and computer science exam to get into computer science? What is this rubbish.... And I am also completely against the curriculum in first year of engineering. Why should computer science engineers study Engineering Drawing with a pencil, compass and all those complicated and outdated methods when the whole world is using CAD? And why am I being taught workshop practices. I came here to become a computer science engineer not a mechanic. And why the f*** do I need to study chemistry again in first year, again doing that titration nonsense in the laboratories. It is not the engineer's fault for being unemployable. It is the fault of the colleges for producing unemployable engineers. We are paying money to get educated, not to get tortured.

Great video as always. Two observations I have; 1. Living in the UK I see that students have to self study here too and 2) if we take out the ability to communicate in English as a criteria for quality, many more Engineers will make the cut especially those with the right aptitude and knowledge but having difficulty to convey ideas in English. In my previous job in Blr, we had an engineer working as service technician and drawing a lesser salary only because he could not speak good English. We see engineers from Japan, Italy, France speaking the regional language and working in tech without any difficulty.

I am a alumni of BITS Pilani, Pilani campus and can share my experience. I did my masters in US and made my big bucks. All of my achievements till date are due to the grooming which I received at BITS. There are a few points which I think BITS did right. Have smaller batches. The average batch size of a stream in BITS is around 60. A classroom strength is around 35-40. Students can choose which faculty they want to register under for a tutorial class or lecture for a course. I remember most of my profs at BITS. Since we were a small group, we developed good relations with our faculty. We went to their homes and they would also come to dinners hosted by our hostels, club etc. We were always on our toes with regards to academics. In BITS, there is a culture of surprise tests. Since the environment is highly competitive, we made sure that we would study on a regular basis in order to keep up with the course. In Pilani, there were minimal distractions,so most of our activities were aimed towards self development. Whether it be in a club or a social project, the student’s energy would get channelised into something constructive. The culture at Pilani was amazing. Not only were the students way mature, they were helpful to their juniors as well. The student bonding was amazing. There was no attendance and yet some faculty would fill up lecture halls. I remember in thermodynamics and Math 1, where I used to sit on stairs of the hall just to listen to the faculty. Some faculties would fill lecture halls even after 8pm with students sitting on stairs. We went to classes because we wanted to and not because we were forced to. We developed a sense of respect towards all disciplines. Some of my favourite courses which I took as an elective were outside my core domain. The startup culture is highly developed. Due to a very strong alumni network and the mature crowd, a lot of students venture into startups and come out with multi million dollar ideas.

In India, in most of the cases the overall education system is a miserable joke that churns out college graduates like an assembly line. The biggest problem of engineering colleges in India is it's syllabus. I already know that I have to learn on my own. I once analysed the syllabus of South Korea University of COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING and i found out that in korean universities (cse) students are taught computer subjects from the very 1st day, the 1st semester and the year of the college till the last day, the last sem and the last year But here in my college of cse i studies semiconductor physics, basic electrical engineering, maths 1 and 2, engineering drawing, workshop, English, chemistry and programming with C language in the 1st year of my college. Out of all the subjects only programming was the subject which was related to my field. I mean in one year of my engineering i learnt only one thing of my use (which i learnt on my own). That's not it yet, in 3rd sem i am going to study analog electronics, digital electronics, calculus, effective technical communication (in language) IT workshop and DSA. Out if it all only dsa and it workshop are important. In 4th sem i will be taught environment studies and discrete subjects along with other useful subjects related to computer. I mean EVS? I , a cse student will be studying evs. In 5th sem useless subjects i will be studying is foreign language and automata theory, humanities and constitution of India. I mean wow! In 6th sem the useless subject is electronic devices. For 7th sem it is human resource management, renewal energy system and...... and...... and biology! I mean i left biology in 10th class but i will be reading it in 7th sem of ny CS engineering! I mean have a look at the curriculum! First year of my engineering is a waste of time and in every sem i have atleast one extra subject to study which is of no use to me In addition we have to prepare assignments, attend lab and make practical files if these useless subjects......... And moreover I studied almost all the subjects of my 1st year by myself (i have recently given my 2bd sen exams). And my seniors say that we have to study on our own.

I am currently pursuing my BTech degree from a Tier-1 college, and it's astonishingly true that whether you are enrolled in a private institution or a prestigious government college, the curriculum feels overwhelmingly outdated. It has become abundantly clear that I must heavily rely on self-study rather than the lackluster lectures provided by my college. The only silver lining one can find in being part of a top-tier college is the invaluable alumni network, comprised of accomplished individuals who can open doors and provide valuable guidance. Additionally, there are a handful of exceptional teachers who are simply too brilliant for their current positions and are always enthusiastic about helping students. However, the most compelling aspect of a top-tier college is the fiercely competitive environment it fosters. This environment forces you to push yourself beyond your limits and outwork your peers, igniting a fire within you to strive for greatness. The struggles and challenges faced in such an environment are truly transformative and become instrumental in shaping individuals into resilient and determined professionals.

Those candidates who desperately need job but doesn't have skills, you people don't hire them and you talk about people quitting companies. You need to understand this, people who are already skilled or know little bit. They already have their dream companies where they want to go and they use companies like yours to gain experience and go to those companies. But whereas people who are desperate and need job, but doesn't have skills. You people don't hire them by telling them that first get skills then apply. This is the reason why you don't get loyal employees. I hire people who are desperate and need job. I don't care if they have skills or not. Because skills can be learnt. These people are working with me more than decades and they are all very good at what they do. You need to understand their situation. They didn't get best education, they born in mediocre environment. But if they approach you for the work that means they want to make living and you job as a leader is to encourage them and make them grow themselves. This is the duty of us as a leader. But most of the entrepreneurs these day are starting companies for the sake of getting rich. They are not really a good leaders. All they want is funding and want to hire experienced skilled candidates to build their product and want to make company big and sell. I would suggest you to not think people are burden or liability. If they are approaching you then they want to grow that's why they came to you and your job as a leader is to build your team and that's how you will make a successful company. I don't understand when people say that we have engineers but they are not employable. Those people who are making such statements haven't gone to grassroot to know the cause. And same people struggles to hold the talent in their own company. They leave.

Once you get out of college, if you really can afford to stay without a job, please try to take those books back and just read them once again in your pace. And it's not a funny thing about civil, mechanical, electrical engineers but a big reason to worry.

So true.... the way people are going crazy behind Computer Science will only put core industries in danger. I'm currently doing chemical engineering in Bits Pilani Goa and most of my colleagues want IT or Finance roles. If this continues to happen then the Indian manufacturing sector will collapse one day and it looks inevitable.

Nice video, Mohak ! Two comments though: 1. Even though the syllabus many times is outdated, it builds the foundation for learning the new shiny things out there. Students anyway shouldn't rely on the college to teach theme everything latest and greatest. Engineering always comes down to self study. E.g. You gave an example of Engineering Drawing. I learnt the Engineering Drawing as part of the first year curriculum. If I were to start with a software directly, I would not think about why and how as the actual pencil and paper made me think. So IMO, some basics should always be part of the curriculum. (Although, as a software professional I am not gonna use either.) But as I engineer, I need to know basics of all engineering disciplines. 2. From my first hand experience of studying Batchelor's in India and Master's in the US, I don't think the number of students per teacher matter that much as long as you have a quality teacher. We often had classes with 200+ students in a single classroom(during my Master's in the US) and still learnt quite a lot from the professor. So focus should be on improving the quality of teaching rather than heuristics like number of students per teacher.

Many students opt to pursue engineering primarily for the sake of social status, rather than a genuine interest in the field. Only a minority of students are truly passionate about engineering. When asked about their reasons for choosing engineering, many cite factors like parental expectations, prospects of campus interviews, or the desire for an elevated social standing that may lead to a more desirable marriage and stable future. Unfortunately, the number of students driven by their genuine interest in engineering is significantly low. Moreover, the quality of faculty members often falls short, as it is quite common to encounter incompetent teachers who lack the necessary expertise to effectively educate students. Finding knowledgeable instructors becomes a challenging task due to this prevailing issue.

The points you mentioned are totally valid for many of the engineering colleges out there.. I am working as assistant professor at one of the engineering colleges in TN. And I must say,my college is really doing good when compared to the rest. 1. Students are allowed to go for internship from 1st semester itself. 2. 75% of attendance is mandatory, but students are always allowed to take on duty and to do their research work. 3. We have incubation centre at college which supports the startup ideas - not only for students but even for faculty members. 4. There are so many competitions which, encourages the students to come up with their research work and even the college supports in getting a grant from government for the research works by students and faculty members. 5. Placement starts from 6th semester itself, and if in case any student can't get placed during these four years, the placement support is extended for one more year after they leave college. There are plenty of these kind of initiatives my college is taking for the better future of engineering students.

I am currently studying in 6th semester of a polytechnic college under AICTE. I am a student of Computer Science and Technology. We have a college professor who had taught almost nothing since 3rd Semester. Usually he used to take 1 or 2 class in which he teaches us the most basic concepts of the subject and then told us to study the remaining chapters ourselves and he gave a huge PDF as a study material which contains a lot of nonsense stuffs. He usually gave marks freely to all students in assignments, internal exams (those exams were held based on his 1 to 2% lectures) and we have to face serious problems in semester exams because he taught absolutely nothing and we had a hard time to pass the exams. In our 3rd sem, he was the subject teacher of Python, and he taught upto for loops in college while the curriculum contains modules, packages, Django, RegEx and so on. And so, we had to study by ourselves. He was also the subject teacher of many important subjects like IoT, Digital Image Processing, Computer Networks and Machine Learning in the later semesters. But he has taken only 1 or 2 lectures or taught absolutely nothing. In our current semester, he said that he cannot take class of Machine Learning and so he will give a PDF as a study material. This is the worst scenario in our department. Other teachers still teach some stuffs which are important and 1 or 2 teachers are absolutely good at teaching. Lastly, we have got almost nothing in placements due to low quality campusing. This is the current situation of our college.

All of this was so true. I did Engineering in Bangalore too. My college was nowhere near top and I went there since my CET rank wasn't good haha. I wanted to do fashion designing or something in art but like my mum was against it lmao. And really everything we learnt was outdated and the staff were meh. I was still good at coding, and I remember that in labs I was the ones who used to help out my friends clearing errors and with code and all since I used to be done with my tasks earlier. We did have few new topics. And in one of the the practical lab the teacher was struggling with a newer IDE or something, and I had used that in an internship I had done so I had to help them out. (I had done an internship in Data Analysis domain). Even placements was not good. I did get into 3 companies but 2 through pool campus and one 1 was All-India recruiting. And many of my batchmates by the last semester had joined placement institutes outside through which they were able to learn concepts and I think got place through that. There were few who got a job way later and many who didn't get relevant job. I did join a IT company and got a project in computer science field(Network Security Domain), it's just it didn't click with me and I didn't like it much. I did have to do that project for 18 months due to company regulations. Oh and I was trained in Python in the company and got assigned to N/W Security lol. Though later I had done a internal course on React and shifted to Front End Development. And whatever work I did in the IT company, I had learned the work and concept in the company lol. Development was nice, I was good too, cuz I am not bad in coding, but it was very stressful due to overload in work. But what happened was I was learning Korean on weekends, and then got a job as Korean Translator/Interpreter for IT projects in a company. And I actually switched... (I worked in the IT company for 3 years, and I also got a promotion before resigning haha). The pay was higher and the stress is lesser than before. Though growth-wise and external opportunity wise its a drawback. I am enjoying the new job tho (I do have a lot to improve even here), though I do get worried about my future sometimes. I wonder if I can and if I want to go back to Engineering again hehe. I do now sometimes wonder if I should study Graphic Designing haha. I am so lost in life lol.
