@TheEvertw

@@tbraghavendran This is a Pilot. Pilots commonly take over control of a ship when approaching a harbour, because they are specialized in the local conditions and procedures. They also know which schedule the ship is supposed to follow and where it is supposed to berth. And they prevent dubious actions near the port, like unmonitored unloading and other forms of smuggling. To do their job, they board a ship a dozen or so miles out (i.e. at full sea) to sail it in, and when sailing out they leave the ship when at full sea. And the ship doesn't stop to let them board.

Yeah I was in the USN but if I could start over at 18 I might at least look very hard at the Merchant Marines and one of their schools. My understanding was that it's 10-15 years as a licensed deck Officer as like the floor for being qualified for these positions. The licensing I believe is basically controlled somewhat through State Gov. but mostly through a board of former pilots and industry guys and the written tests are pretty rigorous just to go on and train under another pilot for multiple years before you're on your own. It makes sense when you think about events like in Egypt where a screw up by a pilot shut down the Suez for almost a week. Definitely one of those niche jobs that seems really cool and I always heard is very very lucrative.

I am certain you have heard about the " Three Points of Contact " rule I have worked for a company who changed it to " Four Points of Contact " As in you Must have at least 2 feet or 2 hands plus 1 foot or hand on a stable surface. Plus your eyes in contact with the vehicles at all times. This same company also has another rule. " If it Can't be done Safely, It Won't be done at all " Most companies are starting to follow similar rules, or risk getting shut down. I can't say what company it is, however I can say they are the World Leader in a particular industry.
