Ok, So I blame “The Smugglers Room” for this rabbit hole. I started watching Brian’s channel and saw the cool Rear Projection Lens’s and he would nonchalantly say you need to get an older TV.
I would see these come up for free on Facebook Marketplace all the time, so when was able to borrow my Dad’s truck for a week…I picked up like 5 Rear Projection TV’s. And yes, this was a workout for sure. These TV’s were huge,…especially the one that was built like furniture and even had its own doors to close over the screen. So fancy.
So much of the carcass can be reused in projects, but there is an abundance of circuit boards,…but the main focus is always the 3 lens’s assembly. Be careful…because it is crazy heavy. I have found, that the older the tv, the better the lens and lens housings. I took apart one that was mid to late 90’s and it used just one lens. Also, if you have a need for ultra-high quality mirrors….they don’t get better than a rear deflection mirror.
SAFETY NOTE: wear safety gear (eg gloves and protective glasses). The liquid is often a solution of DI (deionized) and Ayer and propylene glycol with a small amount of surfactant. Google it for awareness and to mitigate risk
