You are right about that. I once ride on sand , when I squeeze the front brake, the bike will fall out of balance if you didn’t prepare. But if you press the rear brake, the bike is easily stop and the balance is slightly to no falling.

Nooby question: why do we need to look the rear wheel in that situation?

Very good question. Why indeed? I’ve been riding in sand for many years and have never heard of having to lock up the rear either.

Pretty sure it has to do with traction & steering control. If you brake with the front and start sliding, you’ll lose all steering, so it’s harder to control. If you brake with your rear, and lose traction, you can still steer with the front.

Locking the rear brake is more efficient as the rear tire digs in to stop quickly. This only applies in very deep sand or mud, on everything else it's more efficient to avoid locking up to stop

My take on it is this: In deep loose sand you want/need to come to a stop as fast as possible or risk losing balance or tipping over. The rear wheel will not slide out enough to throw your balance off if it is in the loose sand like it would on gravel or pavement.

I’d like to see this demonstrated in soft sand, not a hard packed road.

How is it that the first time people skid a wheel is when they are adults on a 450lb bike that costs 20g ? Didnt they EVER ride a bicycle ? Practice on a mountain bike if you have to

Couldn’t find actual deep sand to practice in? I know there’s plenty in the Baja.

@@kloppskalli I don’t want to bust Dusty’s chops too hard here, but the previous video where he gives her advice about deep sand riding was also filmed on hard packed dirt. Hey, I’ve been on a big bike in very deep sand in the Baja for days and I know how it feels when you don’t have the confidence and competencies you need to be fluid. So a video or two in actual deep sand - maybe even as you have to go in deep sand ruts that go diagonal through sharp turns - would be beneficial. Coming to a controlled stop on hard-pack is a start.
