This is a lecture on the early writings of Marx prepared for a seminar at Simon Fraser University. The lecture addresses Marx's attempts to overcome the contradictions of modern philosophy in a philosophy of praxis. These contradictions are summed up for him in the antinomy of reason and need. Reason is universal and valid for all, so it reflects the cooperative nature of human being, while need under capitalism places everyone in competition in contradiction with what Marx calls "species-being." The lecture explains the background to Marx's solution to the antinomy of reason and need and concludes with a discussion of Marcuse's early interpretation of Marx's Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844. That discussion extrapolates a solution to the contradiction in the Manuscripts from several of Marcuse's early essays.
