In this video, we have discussed the reasons of bearing premature failure which is happened due to following aspects;
improper mounting of bearing
lack of lubrication in bearing
over lubrication in bearing
improper selection of lubrication
Due to abrasive wear in bearing
improper selection of bearing clearance
misalignment of connected equipment
fatigue or bearing overload during service
Tight or loose fit on shaft or hub
imrproper selection of type of bearing
Or in details, Anti-friction bearings which include ball, roller, and needle bearings are used in many industrial and consumer product applications, automobiles, industrial machinery, household appliances. They are designed to reduce friction between rotating parts on a fixed axis, such as a pump shaft as it rotates driving an impeller as well as absorbing large radial forces generated by a pumps working motion.
Unfortunately, many bearings fail prematurely in service because of contamination, poor lubrication, temperature extremes, poor fitting, and misalignment
There are following main reasons for bearing failure;
Lack of Lubrication
It causes the internal ball bearings to scrape against each other rather than slide. Heat quickly builds leading to rapid Bearing failure as these are made of metal .
Over Lubrication
Excessive amounts of grease within a bearing can lead to bearings mixing grease, resulting in increased energy loses & temperatures rise which can result in quicker wear of the internal elements that is its balls & raceway.
Contamination
When mechanical seal fails, fluid can leak directly into bearings. Water or other fluids can contaminate the bearings causing loss of viscosity of lubricants or leading to chemical attack which results unit fails to perform as designed.
Over Temperature/ Hot Running Conditions
If bearings begin to operate at higher than design temperatures, it can cause internal lubricants to purge from unit. Due to this reason with less lubricant will leading to failure.
If pump operate too far left or right of its performance curve, fluid viscosity be higher than expected, frequent solids will be transferred, or high temperature fluids will be handled which can cause internal elements to heat quickly.
Misalignment
Misalignment causes large uneven radial loads to be absorbed by components not designed or built to withstand such levels of stress.
Internal Clearance
In case of too loose then it can cause shaft vibrate and means the bearing will not work as designed to absorb the radial load, and lubricant flow in the bearing internal element will not cool them so It can lead to overs friction, overheating & sudden failure if is not set correctly,
In case of too tight, metal to metal contact is probable causing shaft wear and bearing overload.
Excessive load or Fatigue
The most common cause of bearing failure is fatigue, with 34% of all premature bearing failures being attributed to fatigue. If a pump is operating too far on the left or right of its curve, the viscosity of the fluid is higher than expected, or there are large amounts of solids in the pumped fluid this can cause bearing overloading. This can lead to excess friction, overheating and prompt failure.
Housing Wear
As bearing housings wear the bearing is free to move more freely resulting in excess play. This can cause lubricant flow within the bearing to behave differently leading to inadequate lubrication
