I noticed my jalapenos turned dark purple on the side facing the sun when the leaves that would normally shade them got eaten by something. This was the height of summer, so cold wasn't a factor. My hypothesis is that it was acting as a kind of natural sun screen.

You might be mistaken .I am new to vegetable gardening. My bell peppers have been nice and green until the start to turn brown and then red. No biggie. I noticed my bell peppers were having black patches. I searched and found your video. Last week we had a plummet in temperature from upper 80s to 90 down to upper 40s to mid 50s which lasted a week. This is the new Orleans area. I noticed after listening to your video the same pattern of areas exposed where the darkened spots and where there was another pepper or foliage they are still green. Perhaps in your experience it happens more so to jalapenos but I think there is strong evidence this happened to my bell peppers and to a lesser extent my cayenne and Thai peppers. Just reporting my experience.
