Published in 1938, Rebecca tells the story of a woman recollecting her past and her struggle to find her identity.
The narrator meets, and after a brief courtship, marries a wealthy Englishman, returning to his country residence as the second Mrs Maxim de Winter. Her husband’s first wife, Rebecca, passed away the year before in a tragic accident, but his new bride soon realises how hard it will be to lay her ghost to rest.
Struggling with a housekeeper who seems determined to undermine and unsettle the new Mrs de Winter, she soon believes that her husband regrets his impetuous decision to marry her, and is still in love with the seemingly perfect Rebecca.
But when a ship is wrecked off the coast, leading to the discovery of Rebecca’s small boat and evidence that it had been tampered with, Maxim is forced to confess the truth of his relationship to his current wife.
