"You're tearing me apart!" Fun Fact: T-shirt sales soared after James Dean wore one in this film. Compare this to when Clark Gable had a shirtless scene in It Happened One Night (1934). T-shirt sales dropped 40%. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The 1949 Mercury coupe James Dean drove in the movie is part of the permanent collection at the National Automobile Museum in Reno, NV. Let's Go Fact: The opening scene in the movie with Jim Stark and the toy monkey was improvised by James Dean after the production had been shooting for nearly 24 hours straight. He asked Nicholas Ray to roll the camera, that he wanted to do something. Ray obliged and the improvisation went on to become the famous opening scene.

You noticing Sal Mineo's resemblance to Ralph Macchio immediately made me think of Francis Ford Coppola's "The Outsiders" (1983), also about teenagers in trouble. The look of the film is VERY obviously inspired by "Rebel" (when I saw it again with a friend at a revival movie house a few years ago, after 10 minutes she turned to me and said, "Coppola must have watched 'Rebel Without A Cause' a hundred times before making this.") Macchio's casting was a major part of it. He looks and acts uncannily like Sal Mineo in "Rebel."

Two supporting characters ended up being key part of a pair of classic 60s sitcoms: The detective questioning Natalie Wood at the beginning is Edward Platt, who played "The Chief" in "Get Smart"--which lasted for five seasons from 1965-70. James Dean's father is played by Jim Backus, who played millionaire castaway Thurston Howell III on "Gilligan's Island," which lasted for three seasons. Backus is likely better remembered as the voice of nearsighted cartoon character Mr. Magoo.

This was among the first, if not the first movie which dealt with teen angst. Not long before, a "teenager" wasn't a thing. People typically stopped school between the 7th & 9th grade & went to work on the farm or in a factory, but during the Great Depression in order to free up jobs for families with children, people in their teen years were encouraged to stay in school, rather than joining the work force, thus "teenagers" as a demographic group was born!

This movie changed American society. It was the first (mainstream) film to depict how the Baby Boomer teens were feeling about the perfect 1950s and their (fake) perfect families. It also depicted a queer character played by a queer actor (who was really in love with his costar). And the fact that he was the only non-white teen character, and he's the one the cops killed. Not a coincidence, I think. Mineo was murdered in his Hollywood mansion in what many still believe was a gay bashing murder. Dennis Hopper's debut, too! He goes on to change film history with Easy Rider and so many iconic performances like Blue Velvet. I'll never get sick of it.

Also, if you guys haven't seen it, I strongly recommend watching the Natalie Wood documentary directed by her daughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner. It isn't one of those crime docs that uses her name to talk about the mysterious drowning. It's disrespectful! Instead this celebrates her work and also explores more of who she was through her friends and family
@Muirmaiden

Since the LASD is investigating the case as a homicide (and her daughter is about protecting her stepfather than wanting to find out out the truth), I wouldn't call the doucmentaries about Natalie's death "stupid", especially since it is no longer considered an accident.

@@rebeccassweetmusic4632 But she doesn't want to know what happened to her mother? It didn't help that Wagner moved on in the blink of an eye. Of course it would be hard for Natalie's daughters, but to mock an ongoing investigation and to justify why Wagner won't cooperate, which makes him look guilty. The two other men on the boat, Dennis Davern and Christopher Walken have cooperated with the authorities and have been cleared. Wagner is the only one who has refused to cooperate. If he had nothing to hide, he would have spoken to investigators when the case was re-opened and cleared the whole thing up. Why won't he do that? Because he has something to hide.
@Muirmaiden

@@rebeccassweetmusic4632 I adore Natalie as an actress, but she was murdered and her killer got away with it. That is part of her life story, whether we like it or not. And don't even get me started on how poorly Natalie's sister Lana has been treated. She was asked to participate in the documentary, but was told that if she did, she would have to sign a document stating that she would never speak about Natalie's death publicly again. Not surprisingly, she declined. And then she was trashed in the documentary. So don't say that Wagner has nothing to hide and the daughters are not assisting him in that regard.

Terrific film! James Dean only made 3 films before his untimely death: EAST OF EDEN (1955), directed by Elia Kazan and based on John Steinbeck’s epic novel, which was released in April 1955 after premiering in New York the month before; this film, which was released almost a month after his death; and George Stevens’ GIANT (1956), based on Edna Ferber’s massive 1952 novel, which was released in November 1956 after premiering in New York City in October of that year. Dean was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for both EAST OF EDEN and GIANT posthumously but did not win. By the way, as you noted, that was not the Captain from the Bad Boys films (actor Joe Pantoliano aka Joey Pants) but younger in the brown jacket, that was actor-director Dennis Hopper, who also appeared in GIANT and was later famous for roles in COOL HAND LUKE (1967), with Paul Newman, HANG ‘EM HIGH (1968), with Clint Eastwood, TRUE GRIT (1969) with John Wayne, as a burnt-out photojournalist under the sway of Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) in Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece APOCALYPSE NOW (1979), as the basketball-loving town drunk in HOOSIERS (1985), which got him a Best Supporting Actor nomination, as the bizarre oxygen-mask wearing Frank Booth in David Lynch’s BLUE VELVET (1986), and as the villains in SUPER MARIO BROS (1993), SPEED (1994), and WATERWORLD (1995). He’s probably best known for his directorial debut, the groundbreaking 1969 film EASY RIDER, in which he co-starred with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson. Really looking forward to seeing METROPOLIS (1926)! That’s an important and iconic film and very influential!

Thanks again for your research and a great reaction. This movie was, in my opinion, giving moviegoers a look at teenagers and their issues in the 1950s, some of which have carried over into the present. FYI, it was ironic that Sal Mineo, who was bisexual in real life, played Plato in the film; Plato is regarded as the first gay teenager in moviedom. Sadly, in stark contrast to "Love, Simon," Plato would be stereotyped to be miserable and die. So much of this movie is heartbreaking yet real. Hat tip to you for your observations.

Fantastic commentary for this one, Mia! Made me like it even more! You're totally on the money about it being one of the earliest "teenage" movies (teenager is a 1950s expression/invention). Brando, Clift and Dean: those guys really changed the game with "the method". All three of Dean's films are great; in fact, this one may be my least fave. ("Giant" is probably my fave. You get to see him grow into the older man he never got to be.) I have to say, watching this movie it just makes me angry: he clearly had more to give and we got gypped out of who knows how many great performances. Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo came to tragic ends as well, it's bittersweet seeing them all together. Not unlike watching "The Misfits". Which is pretty upsetting because it’s really about a bunch of kids who are bullied by their families and peers, and the only time they get in trouble is when they stand up for themselves. Take the mansion scene too- a bunch of kids are pretending to be a loving family, but do they know what a loving family is like?

This, “Blackboard Jungle” and a few other films in the mid-50s examined a phenomenon in US society that largely was ignored until after WWII: teen-agers. Before the ‘50s, the closest thing to teen-angst movies was the “Andy Hardy” films, but raw emotions were not in the mix back then. The parents, police, et al., in “Rebel” often seemed scared to death of these kids, reflecting the real-world social angst in ‘50s society about “juvenile delinquency” and “hoodlums,” which really amounted to teens with disposable income with more time on their hands than during WWII and the Depression, so there was a rise in juvenile crime in some areas, and Hollywood blew it up into silver screen proportions.

Plato's gun was a .45 automatic, which means that even though Jim removed the clip there still would have been one bullet in the chamber when he gave it back to Plato (see: SCENT OF A WOMAN).

11:22 I'd say 1949's 'City Across the River' starring Tony Curtis & Thelma Ritter was an earlier film about teenagers having their issues being shown on screen although I didn't think it was very good.

James Dean and Marlon Brando definitely influenced the next generation of actors like Robert Deniro, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, and many more...

Plato was in love with Jim. Sal Mineo, a closeted gay actor, was playing it as having a crush on Jams Dean. And let's be honest, who wouldn't.

This movie depicted teenagers doing some crazy things… and the truth is, they always had been and will and yet nowadays we infantilize them and treat them like they have no agency of their own.
