I always find it so weird when you become older than all these famous people who died young and achieved so much in their short life. I'm 29 now and I'm older than James Dean, Heath Ledger, River Pheonix, Kurt Cobain/other members of the 27 club when they died.

Hi Jeff: This release rings all bells for me. It is an essential film for me with the highest possible quality. My 4K collection is largely comprised of these 'essential to me' films. I still love Blu-Ray for most films. - Heather

In addition to the tragic deaths of James Dean and Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo who played Plato in Rebel Without a Cause, was stabbed to death by a mugger outside of his West Hollywood home in 1976 at age 37. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1955 for Best Supporting Actor at age 17 for this film. All the key actors in this film met an untimely end.

Phenomenal method actor, one of the best! I've visited his home town in Indiana a few times, it's like going back in a time machine, his town hasn't changed much since it's death, the town is stuck in the 50's! His grave stone is covered with lipstick kisses! My James Dean film rankings. #1 Giant(Epic Movie), #2 East of Eden(Dean's Best Acting), #3 Rebel without a Cause(like you said, his most Iconic film)!

I had never seen this film, saw the 4K was on sale on Amazon for $10. So I did a blind buy, and just watched it tonight. It is now one of my favorite films. What a great flick I was missing this whole time!

Boy these shots of the film looks beautiful. One of the best films perhaps ever made. Personally, maybe not one I will pick up unless it comes on sale some time. But a true piece of film history for sure!

I first saw this in cinemas when they did a classics screening, probably close to 10 years ago now. Been wanting to re-watch it for some time, but for some reason never picked up the blu-ray, so when this was announced I though I might as well just wait for this release. Got it in the mail earlier this week and will have a watch over the weekend.

Hello- Jeff's comments on the Rebel 4K disc remind me of my reaction to the Criterion Collection 4K disc of The Red Shoes. the CC 4K disc of TRS is the best its ever looked and sounded on home video but there was nothing 4K about the picture image.

I'm looking at the videos of East of Eden 1955 online, but it seems so different from the blu ray that was released. I know there was a new 4k restoration done on East of Eden, but that new restoration was after the blu ray release, yet the videos on youtube match the 4k restoration. the video was released when the blu ray was also released. Can someone tell me why the blu ray looks so different in colour than the videos online?

Hello when you do so called movie reviews of films from the past do you do it on personal preference or how you think a film should look what do you compare it to the original 35mm film or old vhs DVD or bluray. Because none of dose formats are transparent to the 35mm film

Another great review, Warner has been doing a great job with this 100 anniversary 4ks. Not my favorite James Dean film though, East Of Eden still his best. Which by the way, saw a video at TCM that Warner was restoring some films and East Of Eden and Rio Bravo were among them, but I couldn't find a release date or if they would be available on 4k. Someone has more information about it?

Both of these are due to be released later in the year as part of box sets exclusives but the others in the boxes have already been released. I won't be paying a fortune just to gain a couple of them. I hope that they come out as single issues then I would buy them

JEFF - It was shot in the highly inferior WARNERCOLOR instead of TECHNICOLOR , and that is why it looks so muted and flat and why the colours are so murky and brown by today's standards. A year later, when Judy Garland began filming "A STAR IS BORN" at Warner Bros, they filmed JUDY in WARNERCOLOR too... However after about a month THEY SCRAPPED the entire months footage -- and the began AGAIN in TECHNICOLOR and CINEMASCOPE... Judy Garland was REALLY unhappy with the dreadfully inferior WARNERCOLOR process. That is why "REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE" will never look any better than this.... They failed to use TECHNICOLOR...

Not exactly. First of all, "A Star is Born" went into production before "Rebel Without a Cause". "A Star is Born" premiered on September 29, 1954; "Rebel..." was released on October 26, 1955. BOTH films were shot using Eastman Color Negative film 5248. "Rebel..." was released on Eastman Color Print, Dye Coupler Film - referred to as 'WarnerColor'. Dye coupler film was subject to fading, etc., if mis-treated - although produced sharper prints than did dye transfer - read on... "A Star is Born" was released using the Technicolor Dye Transfer system, a by-product of which was [potentially] more saturated colors, which did not fade, but wasn't quite as sharp as a dye coupler print could produce - and in the early days of CinemaScope - a big deal. If the story is true, perhaps Miss. Garland was [understandably] upset with the *release print* quality of WarnerColor, thus insisting the studio abandon it in favor of [the more expensive] Technicolor release prints. I bring this up only as a point of reference, as it really only applies if we are viewing film prints projected on a screen. The information regarding the source materials for BOTH titles - weather viewing a Blu-ray or 4K disc - indicate both were sourced from the original camera negatives, so 'Technicolor' as referenced here has *nothing* to do with color quality. So, that begs the question as to why "A Star is Born" does indeed display a more pleasing color palette. We must assume the negative materials were in better shape; or perhaps it has to do with how the images were exposed in the camera originally. Who knows.
