As a muslim, I find the "burqini" term intrusive, and a sort of cultural violence. Here in Morocco, we call it simply "swimsuit" , and it's not exclusive to Muslim women, surfers wear a similar thing, and other women who don't wear hijab or who aren't even Muslim. It's weird how anything can become a poster to alter the public attention from real issues , without a genuine intention for general interest.

Disagree with your assessment that slavery was not the cause of the war. To arrive at your conclusion you must completely ignore the events leading to Southern state secession, which were almost exclusively predicated upon preserving slavery. In fact, the North/South battle over slavery began with drafting of the Constitution, specifically the often misunderstood three-fifths compromise. Most believe that undercounting blacks was indicative of regarding blacks as less than whites. WRONG! The Southern states actually wanted to count each and every black equally with whites, not because they believed in equality but because they knew that population numbers favored the Northern more populous states and that those states would have greater representation in the House of Representatives. So the Southern States wanted to count slaves to obtain more representation, knowing full well that slaves would not be allowed to influence politics. The Northern States, on the other hand, did not want to count slaves at all so they would have an advantage in the House of Representatives and greater likelihood of advancing an abolitionist agenda. In compromise, the Northern states agreed to grant Southern states a degree of slave-preserving representation but only to the extent of a little more than half. This was the first salvo of the war against slavery, which continued through U.S. expansion (which made Kansas bleed) and ultimately the Civil War. To say that the Civil War was not about slavery is abject nonsense and in your own words, disregards history.

Did you actually listen to what Walsh said? The South seceded from the Union because of slavery. That is true. But war was not a foregone conclusion at the time. A lot of Northerners wanted to let the South "go in peace". But Lincoln invaded the South to preserve the Union. It is a well-documented historical fact that the war began to preserve the Union, not free the slaves. You're making the mistake of thinking that war automatically came with secession, which is not true. It only seems that way in hindsight. Most Southerners wanted to fight out the right to secede in court, not on the battlefield. In fact, Jefferson Davis resigned from the U.S. senate, but stayed in Washington in the hopes that he would be arrested for treason -- because there would be a trial and he could argue the right of secession on a Constitutional level. But they wouldn't arrest him. In fact, they never arrested or tried any Southerner either during or after the war -- because they knew if they got a chance to argue the right to secede in court, the Southern position would probably win.

Edward R, While slavery was clearly a major cause of the tension that started the Civil War, Lincoln and the North didn’t decide to end slavery until 11/19/1863 (over 2 years after the war started). The South accurately realized that it didn’t have the population to ever control the federal government again so they attempted to create their own new government so that they were politically represented. I think we will eventually see this again, how do you keep a political minority supporting the government of their opposition? That is the real question.
@edwardr1250
5 жыл бұрын
@@vheilshorn Yes, I did "actually listen to what Walsh said." I disagree that the "war" was not about slavery. My point was the inherent divide between Northern and Southern states was always about slavery, going as far back as the drafting of the Constitution with the three-fifths compromise was the first salvo in that "battle." And from that time on there were numerous and frequent skirmishes both political and violent, from the Missouri Compromise to the Kansas Nebraska Act as well as numerous Southern State proposals with their explicit design to preserve slavery in the immediate years leading to the civil war. In other words, contrary to Walsh's thesis, I believe the Civil War was mostly about preserving slavery from the Southern state's perspective and that his attempt to divine the "cause" based on events during the war itself, and upon individual soldier motivation while ignoring the colossal events leading to declared war is simply wrong headed. "You're making the mistake of thinking that war automatically came with secession ...." Don't know where you got that idea. War came because the South initiated war and one of a serious of acts designed to preserve the institution of slavery. "War" itself may not have necessarily been inevitable; however, federal occupation likely would have resulted in the face of a "peaceful" attempt to secede and under the circumstances and attitudes in the South at the time is difficult to perceive how that would not have culminated in war. I will say this, the Northern States did not start a war to end slavery; but the South did start the war to preserve slavery. The Northern States, in my opinion, were relatively confident In their ability to overwhelm Southern representation, despite the Missouri Compromise and Kansas-Nebraska Act. And Southern States knew this and, in my opinion, were desperate in search of a means to rescue a drowning ideology. However, to say the "war" was not about slavery is akin to saying WWII was not about ending Nazi expansion. Recall, the United States did not actually enter the war against Germany until Germany declared war against the United States. So by Walsh's approach, the war was not about U.S. opposition to Nazi-forced expansion, even though the U.S. clearly opposed such expansion as evidenced by its extensive support for Britain and Russia in the years leading up to the U.S. official entry to the war. In other words, to ignore events leading up to the U.S. participation in the war and myopically rely only upon events occurring during the war itself or the supposed individual motivation of soldiers, as Walsh does, as the litmus test for the reason behind a war is, in my opinion, an inherently flawed approach when looking for the root causes and leads to exceedingly erroneous conclusions.

22:34 prior to the Civil War Amendments, there was no law against secession. The precedent the Confederates opted for was that the union was a federal government subject to the states, and if the states didn't like where the country was going they were free to leave. And they never put Jefferson Davis on trial for that reason: he just might have successfully argued that the secession was justified. This conviction was hardly isolated to the southern states. During the War of 1812, while we were getting thrashed by the British, some Northern States gathered in Hartford, Connecticut to consider abandoning the Union. And just as recently as 2016 or so, California made a lot of noise about seceding for the same basic reason South Carolina did in 1860: they didn't like the results of a presidential elecion.

The reason for the civil war is actuality a population shift and how the votes came in for Lincoln. Prior to Lincoln the south had a bigger population so when the south voted for a president he won. But when Lincoln was voted in there were more people in the north and therefore more electoral college votes from the north. Lincoln became president with NO electoral votes from the south.The south said "He's not our President" and chose to seceded. Lincoln only passed the emancipation in 1863 when the south was truly on the run and end was in sight. (1865) Or at least that's what my American History 2100 professor made us learn. Abraham Girt, While slavery was the official reason that Texas seceded, most states like Virginia viewed it in terms of creating sovereignty because they realized with their lower population that they had no political power anymore. The South could never win a federal election again and had many less Congressmen in the House of Representatives (because how many congressmen is based solely on population). Many southerners understood this and wanted government representation. Of course there were hundreds of thousands of southerners; a handful of individuals seceded based on slavery or other factors but that wasn’t representative of the whole group. South Carolina was another unusual state; they seceded to get out of paying tariffs. The point is that there were many reasons different people had for secession, mostly regionally.

I tend to side with the South in the Civil War because while they had slavery legal the North was not getting rid of slavery for moral reasons. It ended up happening and that is good. And while states did say that they seceded for slavery the cause was economic not because they saw the North as morally opposed to slavery because they were not. As an example, the Corwin Amendment was passed in the House with Lincoln's approval and proposed in the Senate by William Seward. The Corwin Amendment, named after the man that proposed it in the House, was an attempt to enshrine slavery as a Constitutional right. The North was willing to give the South slavery enshrined as a right and the South still did not stay. That would kind of indicate that something else was going on. Yet the only Southern states that said why they seceded, only four of them said why they did, blatantly said slavery. So what was the context? Well the biggest political debate in the 1850s was the new states and territories that were being recognized and whether they would be slave states or free states. When CA was becoming a state a senator named David Wilmot proposed a law that would make slavery in the new territories and states illegal. He caught a lot of criticism from his constituents for it so he wrote an oped on why he proposed the law. He said that the reason he proposed the Wilmot Proviso was because he wanted to ensure that the new states and territories were only open to free white Northern labor. The question of slavery at the time had less to do with the moral position of slavery itself and more to do with people not wanting competition in the workforce. That is why after the war the newly freed slaves made a killing in the North. The North was not used to the competition because they had always protected their own labor. And that is why Northern states are huge labor union states. They don't like competition and they never have.

The argument isn't that its hopeless, just that it is for sure going to get bad and we need to take action to limit how bad it gets. I don't know if that's the truth or not, but at least argue with what they are saying. Well, maybe not AOC, but maybe the more reasonable folks.

42:38 The ability to create something out of nothing is not a hallmark of unlimited power. The ability to create _anything_ from nothing would mean unlimited power, but we have no proof that God actually could create anything. All that we can attest to that he purportedly created is a single world severely constrained by the principle of causation, which is a display of a very limited power of creation.

anyone who thinks a post-Michael Scott season of _The Office_ is best is obviously smoking crack, but Matt isn't quite right either... the golden seasons were 2 and 3. seasons 4 and 5 were also solid, just not quite as magical. season 1 was a little weird, where Michael was more of a complete jerk, and not a lovable jerk, and it lacked the bit of joy that the following seasons did. I think it dipped a bit in 6, or maybe early 7, but Michael left the show with a bang... season 8 was definitely the worst (though I did like Robert California in small doses), and season 9 was alright... but even the bad, Michael-less seasons had their moments. I do agree that as the show progressed, the characters became more and more cartoonish, but they never went completely off the rails. I'd say that's what sets _The Office_ above _Parks & Rec..._ as with that show, the characters basically started out as cartoons, except maybe some people in the first season or two. also, Matt is totally wrong about _South Park..._ that show got better with age. the early seasons are just kids saying vulgar things, but it got much more intelligent and satirical as it went on. it still has ups and downs, but I'd say it's still going strong, miraculously, unlike _The Simpsons_ or _Family Guy_ (which I'd argue was always awful, but even more so with time).
