The fact that it beat the Ferrari 360 that badly with a 390 HP 4.6 L Mud Motor is amazing. The 550 horsepower production model was much faster than that. No it was never designed to be a race car like the original but until now it's been the best for GT ever made. The 2016 Ford GT is in an entirely different category of hyper car.

The '67 winning #1 car driven by Gurney and Foyt that they keep showing was a Ford GT MK lV a totally different animal to the GT40 Mk.1, 2, that this modern car was styled after. The MK lV was an all American effort unlike the earlier GT 40's which were an Anglo / American job and shared almost nothing with them. This modern Ford GT is a beautiful car BUT if the MK lV was reinvented for today THAT would be something!

Colin Woodburn Well, of course there'll always be an argument...but it's interesting that when Ford decided to do an updated, street legal supercar, the original design of the GT40 has held up unbelievably well! The Ford GT is a huge hit at car auctions like Barrett-Jackson. The Ford is bring prices about 3 to 4x its original 'sticker price' and these prices continue to climb.

How great a driver was Dan Gurney? Ford redesigned their car just so he would drive it. The sad thing is; No mention was ever made, about Ken Miles part in making that '66 win at Le Mans a reality, nor creating a replica of HIS #1 car. Dan's was a 67, a Mark IV. Not one of the original design. Though I was happy to see him in a car once again. Still the only American driver, driving an American car of his own, and winning a Formula 1 race, over 50 years later.

It absolutely amazing me how cultural and polticial differences seem to find a way to muddle the engineering achievement that had to have taken place to develop a road worthy, emissions compliant automobile in the unbelievable time frame of fifteen months from what was once a road race car that was the pinnacle of achievement during its era. Regardless of who was ultimately responsible it was an achievement that few will ever see, much less be a part of. They deserve more than the drivel I've read here.

It's funny the way they have a touch of amnesia when it come to the origins of Americas best sports car, the seem to have forgotten it was a British design and the early ones were built in Britain, a bit like that other American sports car the AC Cobra, which again was a British car with an American engine.
